    MHD stagnation point flow with suction towards a shrinking sheet

    A steady two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stagnation-point flow of a viscous and electrically conducting fluid over a permeable shrinking sheet has been studied. The governing partial differential equations are reduced to the nonlinear ordinary differential equations by a similarity transformation. The resulting differential equations are then solved numerically using an implicit finite difference method. It is found that the solutions are non-unique for weak magnetic field, strong suction and large velocity ratio between free stream velocity and wall shrinking velocity

    Investigating Malay language writing proficiency level among upper secondary school students

    This paper aims to present the findings of a research on writing proficiency in Malay language of upper secondary schools students in Malaysia. The research is designed to compare writing patterns of urban and rural students from four different zones. The focus of analysis is divided into three aspects, namely, language used, discourse and idea conceptualization. In language used, the focus is on sentence structure, dialect usage and punctuation while discourse looks at interesting phrases. The ideas in the writings are evaluated holistically by looking at the clarity, maturity and relevance of ideas presented. The respondents of this research are selected from five different zones; Kedah (northern zone), Kelantan (eastern zone), Negeri Sembilan (central zone), Sabah and Sarawak (East Malaysia). The total number of respondents is 1524 students. Generally, the findings of the research show that the writing proficiency of the students is at satisfactory level. However, there are differences in the students’ writing performance within the zones

    Wacana akademik tentang etika kajian dalam ilmu linguistik merupakan pendidikan tidak langsung bagi ahli komuniti selapangan. Pengkaji sememangnya terikat dengan tatasusila penggunaan bahan kajian dan harus menghormati pandangan asal pengarang lain. Oleh sebab itu, adalah mustahak menyatakan sumber rujukan seperti diagram, skema penunjuk, buah fikiran teras, pandangan pengkaji, serta penemuan pihak lain dalam kepustakaan ilmu linguistik. Perkara ini penting apabila sumber kajian linguistik kognitif digunakan sebagai kerangka analisis imbuhan awalan bahasa Melayu. Cabang linguistik kognitif seperti skema imej dan nahu kognitif yang berkemiripan dalam pandangan masing-masing mudah menjadi maklumat saling rujuk sehingga terhasil dapatan yang keliru hujung pangkal. Perbincangan ini meninjau asal usul skema imej dalam sebuah kajian yang membelakangkan sumber asalnya.     Teknologi Maklumat dan Komunikasi (ICT) kini menjadi tunjang dalam merangka sistem pendidikan di Malaysia. Pengenalan KBSR dan KBSM merupakan reformasi pendidikan yang terbesar di Malaysia. Pendidikan di Malaysia sentiasa diselaraskan dengan kehendak pasaran dunia, iaitu bertujuan menghasilkan modal insan kelas pertama. Program Pengkomputeran Sekolah berjaya melengkapkan prasarana sekolah dengan makmal komputer. Integrasi ICT dalam subjek-subjek di sekolah mula dilaksanakan. Namun, sebarannya adalah tidak sekata. Subjek Geografi merupakan salah satu subjek yang masih bersifat penghafalan fakta tanpa kemahiran teknologi. Integrasi teknologi dalam subjek ini amat perlu bagi memartabatkan serta menghidupkannya. Sistem Maklumat Geografi (GIS) adalah amat sesuai diterapkan dalam subjek Geografi. GIS merupakan salah satu sistem maklumat yang digunakan untuk menyimpan, memapar, menganalisis dan memanipulasi data yang berkaitan dengan ruangan. Pelbagai negara lain seperti Australia, New Zealand dan Singapura telahpun mengintegrasi GIS dalam proses P&P di sekolah. Di Malaysia, GIS dalam bidang pendidikan masih di tahap perbincangan atas kertas kerja. Keupayaan GIS untuk menerap masuk dalam sistem pendidikan di Malaysia masih dipersoalkan. Pelbagai persoalan seperti sejauhmana GIS sesuai di peringkat sekolah, keberkesanan terhadap pelajar, kesesuaian dengan pelajar sekolah dan keupayaan guru mengendalikan GIS sering timbul. Maka artikel ini membincangkan cabaran dan potensi GIS untuk diimplimentasi dalam subjek geografi di sekolah. Kaedah analisis kandungan digunakan untuk mencari sebanyak mungkin peluang dan halangan dalam mengimplimentasi GIS. Dua puluh artikel dari dalam dan luar negara dianalisis secara terperinci menggunakan borang analisis kandungan yang diadaptasi dari Crosswell, P. L.     Classroom audit: student self-performance, group performance, and tutor performance in a problem-based learning tutorial

    The educational industry has been the subject of a number of enquiries throughout this century. Although some changes have been made in medical education in recent years, many improvements are still needed. Problem-based learning (PBL) is one of the innovative changes that have been made in many universities all over the world; the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Centre has also adopted it as one of its major teaching modalities. A fundamental aspect of the effectiveness of PBL is classroom interpersonal skills. To investigate these interpersonal skills in terms of self-, group, and tutor performance, a questionnaire survey was administered to a group of ten first semester medical students at UKM Medical Centre during mid-2009. In terms of self-performance in decision making, this study revealed that the students made decisions by consensus, while 80% of the students understood other team members and asked questions to clarify. Furthermore, 70% of the students were aware of differences in thinking styles, while 90% were patient listeners. In regard to group performance, 90% of the students felt the group was discussing knowledge, and 100% felt that the group was sharing knowledge. Regarding tutor performance, all students were of the opinion that the tutor established rapport, demonstrated the ground rules of PBL well, and created a non-threatening learning environment. The characteristics of interpersonal skills required in PBL were maintained in this classroom. However, many more students should be aware of the differences in thinking styles among themselves to avoid conflict, and the role of the tutor is very important in this regard. This study reflects the audit of a single PBL classroom. Further audits involving other classrooms are recommended in order to promote organisational performance
