    Home Enviroment and Academic Performance In a Rural Area located In South Carolina

    Does the home environment influence academic performance? Conducted by Dr. Judy Abbott, the assistant professor of education at West Virginia University, a study investigated parental encouragement towards writing at home. It was concluded that children who had parents who encouraged or took time to write with them generally had a more positive attitude towards it in school and did better than those who didn’t. As such, this study aims to investigate these two variables among high school students enrolled in advanced placement classes in rural towns. To examine the impact the home environment has on the academic performance of high schoolers in advanced placement classes, a Two Sample T Test will have to be conducted. So far, there is no significant correlation between the two variables. Nevertheless, this study will continue to unmask any potential correlation through quantitative surveys and elaborative interviews

    The Role Of Nestin Cre Recombinase Expression Patterns in E15.5 Transgenic Mice Embryos and Neuronal Stem Cell Lines In Recurrent DNA Break Clusters (RDCs)

    Recurrent DNA Break Clusters (RDCs) are double stranded breaks that occur within the gene body of cell adhesion molecules (CAM). RDCs are highly prevalent in neural stem and progenitor cells and have been shown to cause neuropsychiatric disorders and cancer, and occur more frequently in the presence of stressors. This research aimed to study two stressors: cell proliferation and the addition of aphidicolin [DNA polymerase inhibitor] to embryonic stem cells. In order to observe the first stressor, transgenic mice embryos in the E15.5 stage containing the TdT reporter gene as well as the Nestin-Cre Protein expression vectors, were used. The transgenic mice embryos contained the LoxP Stop LoxP (LSP) sequence that affected the expression of the TdTomato protein in the transgenic mice embryos. The morphology of Nestin Cre (+/-) embryos were sliced and stained using the following staining methods: Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) to observe general morphology; Nissl to observe pathology; and Immunofluorescence to observe TdTomato presence in the organism. The results indicate that the presence of Nestin-Cre led to TdTomato expression, and normal pathology within the embryos. In addition, pluripotent neural stem cells were generated using the Leukemia Inhibitory Factors (LIF) in the NXP010 [p53- and XRCC4-] embryonic stem cells. These cells are very susceptible to double stranded breaks, and therefore were used in this research to better observe RDCs in-vitro and systemically

    The Effect of Various Brute Force Attacks on Online Accounts in Damn Vulnerable Web Application

    Online security is becoming an ever important topic in the modern social climate. People often create many online accounts and use insecure passwords which can easily be divulged by malicious attackers using various hacking methods. One of these methods, such as brute force attacks, requires an attacker to input every possible password into an account in hopes that one is correct (Wanjau et al., 2021). The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of different brute force attacks on online accounts in DVWA, such as dictionary attacks, random character attacks, and bulk-guessing attacks. It was hypothesized that if different brute force attacks were used on online accounts in DVWA, then dictionary attacks would have the most accounts gained-access-to due to the attack taking advantage of human error in password creation. This experimentation was started by adding a database of online accounts to DVWA and each brute force attack being run on DVWA with password and username word lists. 30 trials were run with 1 trial lasting 1 hour. The dictionary attack was found to gain access to the most accounts at 21 accounts over the 30 trials. The bulk-guessing attack had 9 accounts and the random character attack had 0 accounts. With a population of 3, and a significance level of 0.05, the data was significant(p\u3c0.001) and the null hypothesis of there being no difference in the effectiveness of the various brute force attacks was rejected

    Non-Coding RNA in Muscular Dystrophy

    Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is caused by the lack of dystrophin protein, which protects muscle cells from shock and damage. One of the most common dystrophy disorders, DMD currently has no cure and has a life expectancy around 28. Previous research has shown that Utrophin, a protein with a near identical structure and function, is capable of replacing dystrophin and sparing muscles from DMD. Mice who had both their gene for Utrophin and Dystrophin silenced were expected to show complete symptoms for the disorder. Instead, some mice showed immunity to DMD in specific parts of their body. It is believed that the damaged exons of the Utrophin gene were related to the production of the protein. We found that exon 7 in the utrophin gene was still intact in mice with immunity to the disorder and that the exon was transforming into the circular RNA. Our research dealt with these exons by investigating what kind of mechanism could have created the protein, and how it was possible for the circ-RNA toinfluence the expression of the disorder. This Circ-RNA is believed to be the deciding factor in whether patients lacking dystrophin are affected by DMD or not. Our research specifically dealt with the transfection of plasmids into cells, RNA purification, and Western blots in order to understand how the circ-RNA containing exon 7 is stabilized within cells. By understanding how the RNA is stabilized, we can begin to learn how it behaves within cells

    Optimizing Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Energy

    The project, Optimizing Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Energy, is attempting to compare and contrast the three main solar panels on the market today: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin film (amorphous) panels. Fossil Fuels will not last forever and if people want to continue using electricity and energy, when that happens, there has to be another source to use in place of fossil fuels. Not to mention solar energy lessens the amount spent on the electric bill for homeowners. Homeowners should also be able to get the most electricity for their homes with the least amount of money spent. Home Depot did a similar project but Home Depot\u27s project never went as in depth and never specified under what conditions the panels have been tested under. In this project, the three panels will be tested in different weather and light conditions, roof pitches, roof colors, and lift heights. The panels will be compared against each other and the data analyzed to see which panel performed the best in each situation. All other research that was done on this project shows that monocrystalline panels performed the best while thin-film had the least amount of difference in the lower light conditions. An ANOVA test will be used to determine if there is a difference in any differentiating conditions that the panels went through. If the ANOVA test proves the hypothesis, the project shows that different conditions do, in fact, affect the output of the panels

    Blood Pressure and Personality

    This research study aims to see if there is a significant difference between blood pressure and personality types A, B, C, and D in high school students. It was hypothesized type D would have the most increased blood pressure. Research from Victor Babes University found Type D Personality was more susceptible to coronary artery disease. Elevated blood pressure correlates with coronary artery disease and other health risks. Research examining the correlation between blood pressure and personality could support this research. Finding that one personality is more susceptible to certain diseases can lead to more personalized healthcare where the health risk for each personality is understood. Results found that of the high school students polled, type D was a prominent personality. An overweight BMI or BMI\u3e30 is more at risk for elevated blood pressure. A secondary question was asked, to what extent does personality type affect BMI? Personality type D had the highest mean for BMI amongst the data at 23.59. Personality type A had the highest mean for blood pressure. Due to the correlation between hypertension and obesity, an ANOVA test was used to see if there was a significant difference between each personality and their BMI. 3 ANOVA tests were run, one for BMI, diastolic, and systolic. Each test failed to reject the null hypothesis, meaning there was no significant difference between the four personalities. These results could suggest that personality is relatively unimportant in determining one\u27s health. Perhaps a larger sample size would increase the significance

    We wanted to create an indoor navigation system that is safe and usable for schools, not just airports or hospitals. People who are new to the building such as students (freshman and new semester kids), first year teachers, visitors, parents, or substitutes, easily get lost trying to find their way around to get to where they are supposed to go. Maps are posted limitedly around the school, and even then not many people understand or can read them. There is also not much of a guarantee someone will be there to help you find where it is you are supposed to go. For the website we created, it can provide easy indoor navigation aid for those that find themselves lost. The website would provide no visual mapping, for security reasons, but the directions provided would be synced to the user’s unique step pace. For instance, it would ask you to walk a set distance to calculate how many steps you would walk to get from your starting point to your destination. This will give them a personalized experience as the directions are not only read off but also written for the viewer to read. For further security details, the navigation system ideally will only work for those who have a specific login and are on the campus site, but due to the time frame and for the sake of demonstration, we are the only ones who will have access and it will work off-site

    The Effect of Vernonia anthelmintica extract on α-synuclein Overexpression and Lipid Content in C. elegans Strain NL5901 for Parkinson\u27s disease and Diabetes Application

    Despite Parkinson’s disease and diabetes being leading causes of death worldwide, there are still issues finding affordable treatments (Associated Press, 2022). The purpose of this experiment was to test Vernonia anthelmintica, a common folk medicine herb, as a protective agent against ɑ-synuclein and lipid buildup in C. elegans strain NL5901 which are genetically modified to contain YFP for ɑ-synuclein, a protein that can lead to Parkinson’s if misfolding occurs. A decrease in ɑ-synuclein should increase lipid levels, reducing insulin inefficiency and slowing the progression of diabetes (Stoker & Barker, 2020). It was hypothesized that V. anthelmintica would decrease ɑ-synuclein and increase lipid levels. E. coli OP50 was obtained and mixed with V. anthelmintica extract at various concentrations depending on the experimental group (0 and 5 µL), which served as a feeding solution for the C. elegans. After incubation for 48 hours, the C. elegans were washed with M9 buffer for the ɑ-synuclein trials and analyzed using a fluorescent microscope. Lipid trials were placed in a solution of Nile red, a lipophilic stain, and washed using PBST instead. An independent t-test found that a 5 µL concentration affected the fluorescence intensity of ɑ-synuclein (t(58) = -2.339, p = 0.024) and lipid content (t(15) = -16.131, p \u3c .001), discovering significant differences between the control and 5 µL concentrations for both variables. The results of this experiment suggest that V. anthelmintica can be utilized as a treatment for type-2 diabetes and a potential cure for Parkinson’s disease

    Halogen Bonding Between Organoiodine Donors and Diisopropylbenzimidazoleselone

    Halogen Bonding (XB) is an intermolecular force that involves halogen atoms acting as electron acceptors. This is due to these atoms having positively charged areas that electron-dense atoms will be attracted to. The experiment focused on organoiodine molecules, which is a molecule that contains one or more carbon-iodine bond(s). Iodine is a halogen that is known for forming the strongest halogen bonds, which is why it was used in this experiment. The halogen bond acceptor molecule, diisopropylbenzimidazoleselone (iPr2bimSe), is an organoselenium, which is a molecule with one or more carbon-selenium bond. Selenium atoms are known for being excellent halogen bond acceptors, as they are electron-dense. With this knowledge, the experiment was conducted. Solid iPr₂bimSe was measured and added to a vial along with a solid halogen bond donor. These two solids were then dissolved with a solvent, which would then be left to evaporate. The cocrystal left behind would then be analyzed by an x-ray diffractometer, which showed the molecular structure of the cocrystal. The structures showed the lengths of the halogen bonds, which would then be measured. From the results, it was determined that diiodotetrafluorobenzene molecules, along with tetraiodoethylene, could form 1:1 halogen bonds with iPr₂bimSe. 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene could also form a 2:1 cocrystal. These results will ultimately be added to a database that any crystal chemist could look up, which can be used for creating materials, in further studies, and for possible pharmaceutical use

    The Portable Emergency Resource for Laboring Mothers is a kit for expectant mothers, labor and delivery caregivers, and anyone close to an expectant mother. This product is important because there aren\u27t many other products like it on the market and the benefits it provides are substantial. More than ever, mothers are choosing out-of-hospital births, and the consequences of it can be detrimental. With the right combination of tools and crafted instructions, this kit will lower mother/and or child mortality, and ease the nerves of expectant mothers. Materials like cloth casing, nylon zipper, sewing floss, episiotomy scissors, suture kits, paper, binding glue, and cardboard make this product possible. The way this product is tested is through a timed trial to test its efficiency, and an opinionative survey to further better the product. Line graphs will show the time change over time to show trends and a bar graph will compare the opinions of others and make it clear to see what the majority is. In summary, with the Portable Emergency Resource for Laboring Mothers, those choosing out-of-hospital births can be supported medically and be eased of the tensions and fears of unexpected birth
