    The Avenging-Woman On-Screen: Female Empowerment and Feminist Possibilities

    In The Avenging-Woman On-Screen: Female Empowerment and Feminist Possibilities, Lara C. Stache and Rachel D. Davidson demonstrate how the on-screen character of the avenging-woman offers a complex construction of femininity that serves as a representation of cultural conversations about female empowerment, female agency, and feminism. This character is both woman and hero, typically both physically appealing and physical aggressive—a dichotomy that goes against traditional gendered norms of femininity. Television and film narratives produced since 2010, the authors posit, offer an opportunity to reflect on and consider the evolution of cultural ideologies about women and power, given the significant cultural shifts in Hollywood that occurred amid the #MeToo explosion and post–Harvey Weinstein revelations. Stache and Davidson argue that depictions of the avenging-woman utilize a feminist language of empowerment that suggests the potential for a subversive message against the patriarchy while also recognizing that an alternative reading of some representations presents, at times, a hegemonic construction of empowerment that ultimately cautions against subversion within patriarchal systems. The authors question how these representations may limit social change or, in some cases, represent particularly progressive rhetorics about women and power.     Biomass Production and Carbon Stocks in Poplar-Crop Agroforestry Chronosequence in Subtropical Central China

    Agroforest systems have been widely recognized as an integrated approach to sustainable land use for addressing the climate change problem because of their greater potential to sequester atmospheric CO2 with multiple economic and ecological benefits. However, the nature and extent of the effects of an age-sequence of agroforestry systems on carbon (C) storage remain largely unknown. To reveal the influence of different aged poplar-crop systems on C stocks, we investigated the variation in biomass and C storage under four aged poplar-crop agroforest systems (3-, 9-, 13-, and 17-year-old) in the Henan province of China. The results showed that stand biomass increased with forest age, ranging from 26.9 to 121.6 t/ha in the corresponding four aged poplar-crop systems. The poplar tree biomass accounted for \u3e80% of the total stand biomass in these poplar-crop agroforestry systems, except in the 3-year-old agroforestry system. The average stand productivity peaked in a 9-year-old poplar-crop system (11.8 t/ha/yr), the next was in 13- and 17-year-old agroforestry systems, and the minimum was found in 3-year-old poplar-crop stands (4.8 t/ha/yr). The total C stocks increased, with aging poplar-crop systems ranging from 99.7 to 189.2 t/ha in the studied agroforestry systems. The proportion of C stocks accounted for about 6, 25, and 69% of the total C stocks in the crop, poplar tree, and soil components in all studied agroforestry ecosystems, respectively. Our results suggested that the poplar-crop system, especially in productive and mature stages, is quite an effective agroforestry model to increase the study site’s biomass production and C stocks. This study highlighted the importance of agroforestry systems in C storage. It recommended the poplar-crop agroforest ecosystems as a viable option for sustainable production and C mitigation in the central region of China.https://opus.govst.edu/fac/1177/thumbnail.jp

    COVID-19 Vaccine Anxiety in the New Roaring 20s’

    Over the last two years, the discussion on vaccines has grown exponentially. The decision to be vaccinated, while to some is a “no brainer”, is now a debatable topic. The purpose of this presentation is to investigate some of the root causes for vaccine anxiety in the last two years. For this analysis, I will use reputable media sources to identify vaccine anxiety references within political, medical, and social media contexts and the types of anxiety conveyed; namely fear, anxiety, and distrust within vaccines. Politically in the last 2 years, Donald Trump’s ideologies of the danger of vaccinations lead to an uproar of “anti-vaxxers”, standing against vaccines. This itself caused dissonance, where Republican states did not push vaccination requirements as strongly as Democratic states. Easily accessible media also gives detail in the medical view of vaccines, where those who fear the vaccine lose trust in experts involved in researching the virus. Most hospital employees and front-line workers who struggled to contain the spread of COVID-19 push and support the vaccine to prevent more hospitalizations. Yet, there is still those who fear the medical system regarding vaccines, whether it is from not knowing the danger level of the virus or the validity of the vaccine. When legacy media pushes potential views on the vaccine, this leads to a dissonance between the vaccinated and un-vaccinated. For this analysis, I will use reputable media sources to see common references to political, medical, and social views in comparison to vaccine anxiety. The results and implications of the findings within this study will be discussed

    People are searching for things to do to help themselves feel their best. No matter if its to have energy to get you through the day or to do well on a big test or activity it all starts with what we eat to help us conquer every day. My research dives into the multiple food groups and concepts that create one’s diet. Exploring accessible nutritional foods that will improve immune health and longer lasting energy. This includes foods that aid recovery such as proteins, amino acids and even carbohydrates. I also, discourage foods one should stray away from like saturated fats and body draining delights. What one puts in their body can affect one’s mood and how they are feeling. My research helps expose which foods can help increase ‘feel better’ hormones to help regulate a one’s moods with simple food one can access in their everyday lives. Lastly, my research provides simple life hacks with food to help one aid recovery and feel better about themselves

    Integrating Media Literacy into General Education Core Courses for Undergraduates

    This study aimed to understand the essential nature of media literacy, evaluate pre-developed higher education classes for existing media literacy context, and recommend best practices for incorporating media literacy into an undergraduate curriculum. This mixed-methods study of media literacy in undergraduate college courses explored the presence and absence of media literacy lessons within core classes by auditing 15 online course shells accessed through the university’s Learning Management System (LMS). Specifically, all the courses surveyed included the first skill of media literacy, Access; 33% of the classes included Analyze; 27% included Creation; 20% included Reflection; and 20% included Action. Once the audit was complete, the author interviewed media literacy experts to contextualize the importance of media literacy. The author recommends integrating media literacy into existing core classes through assignments, discussion prompts, and updated Program and Course Level Outcomes. If followed, the recommended addition of assignments and discussion prompts would more than double the media literacy skills included in the core classes. In addition, the changes could emphasize the higher-level thinking arenas of education as set forth in Bloom’s Taxonomy. Separately, the author advocates for the addition of professional development for educators at all levels on how to add media literacy into their subjects

    Social justice and collective bargaining are both issues that have a close relationship therefore, the changing landscape of higher education has led to a dynamic partnership between the two (Julius, 2021). Social justice has been defined previously as “arc of social movements in the U.S” (Julius, 2021, p. 137). Similarly, collective bargaining or negotiations involves legal and legislative parameters that concerns labor management practices that has produced a social movement in a class of employees (Julius, & DiGiovanni, 2019; Julius, 2021). Graduate assistants are categorized as an employment group that is marginalized and vulnerable in the higher education sector, although they play an important role in institutional operations (Fay & Ghadimi, 2020)

    Extraction of Cashew Nutshell Liquid from Cashew Nutshells Using the Polyol Induced Extraction (PIE) Method

    Polyol-induced extraction (PIE) is applied to the extraction of cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL) from cashew nutshells using glycerol as a mass-separating agent. In this process, a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile (ACN) and water (H2O) exists as a completely miscible homogeneous phase. Cashew nutshells are soaked in this mixture at room temperature. After soaking the nutshells in acetonitrile/water, a polyol, glycerol, is added to the mixture, and a phase separation is observed. Upon cooling to –20 °C, the phase separation increases with an acetonitrile-rich top layer containing analytes that are soluble in acetonitrile. Initially, the PIE process was studied with pure caffeine as a test molecule. Using a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile and water, 20 % (w/v) of glycerol and cooling to -21 °C, an acetonitrile-rich upper layer formed in 30 % of the total volume. The partition coefficient for caffeine (KPC) was 1.0. Extraction of 2.06 g of cashew nutshells produced 0.33 g of CNSL in 16.0 % yield. By comparison, extraction of 2.05 g of cashew nutshells with cyclohexane produced 0.38 g of CNSL in 18.5 % yield. While extraction of 12.01 g of cashew nutshells by the Soxhlet method using acetonitrile as a solvent produced 2.45 g CNSL in 20.4 % yield. The extracts were analyzed by HPLC, GC-MS, and NMR instruments. The HPLC peak area analysis revealed that the saturated form of anacardic acid was only a minor component (about 2 %). Moreover, 1H NMR analysis indicates that the major component of the extract is a decarboxylated derivate of anacardic acid (Figure 1) which is cardanol (Figure 2). This decarboxylation reaction occurred in the GC-MS due to the loss of the carboxylic acid group from the anacardic acid
