Machine Learning-Based Analysis of DNA Methylation Patterns in E.lenta
Methylation patterns in bacterial genomes, such as those found in Eggerthella lenta, take roles in mediating microbial interactions with their environment, host, and external stressors. These patterns are formed by DNA methylation with diverse sequence specificities that provide insights into the DNA sequence regulation and defense against bacteriophages. We utilize computational approaches and machine learning models to identify and analyze 5mC and 6mA methylation motifs in E. lenta genomes. By integrating host characteristics such as age, birth country, gender, and medication history, we explore 1) the predictive relationships between 5mC & 6mA methylation types in E. lenta strains and these host factors, as well as 2) how these host factors may affect the presence of specific methylation patterns in the bacterial genome, using computational approaches and machine learning models. This study looks into the associations between host factors, specifically the dietary, medication history, race followed by age, and strain-specific methylation patterns, emphasizing the role of DNA sequence patterns in bacterial adaptation
Caregiving for a Formally Abusive or Neglectful Parent: A Qualitative Interview Study of Caregiver Motivations
The research on caregiving for a formerly abusive or neglectful parent has been largely quantitative and does not explain caregiver motivations or daily experiences of caregiving. This research project seeks to explore what motivates caregivers to provide care to a formerly abusive or neglectful parent and what these experiences are like for caregivers. Using in-depth interviews with caregivers of formerly abusive or neglectful parents and autoethnographic data from my own experience of caregiving for my abusive mother, which were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns. This project found that these individuals express feeling a pressure to remain connected to their parents, but they express this motivation in multiple ways, such as building empathy toward their parents, trying to build a conventional image of a good person, and some express that there is simply no one else who will provide care for their parent

Using Science Friday to Promote Pre-Service Elementary Teachers\u27 Science Teaching Self-Efficacy
Developing the science teaching self-efficacy of pre-service elementary teachers has long been a concern for teacher educators (Palmer, 2006). Many pre-service teachers report negative science experiences in high school and often lack confience in their skills to teach science (Kazempout, 2014; Palmer, 2006). In the current age of the NGSS and their expounding impacts throughout K-12 education, addressing low self-efficacy in teaching science needs to be prioritized in the preparation of elementary teachers as it has been linked to avoidance of inquiry science and the increased use of teacher-centered strategies such as textbook driven worksheets (Palmer, 2006). Implementing a practice-based approach witin a science methods course has been the power to positively impact the science teaching self-efficacy of pre-service elementary teachers (Flores, 2015). Designing and implementing a performance based final as a culminating experience within an elementary science methods course is an example of such as practice-based approach. In addition to submitting an elementary science lesson plan with all the accoutrements, pre-service elementary teachers planned, rehearse, revised, and facilitated a Science Friday event in partnership with a local elementary school. This Science Friday event included six classrooms, two from each grade (Grade 3-5), where the pre-service elementary teachers facilitated a science lesson as a 4-station activity included an anchoring phenomenon, as least one hands-on, minds-on activity, and an engineering task. The constraints with this Science Friday event where that the final lesson had to be aligned with a given science content standard from the Menor Teacher, and that the lesson could only be 60 minutes in total length, from open to close. PST feedback was immediately collected after the culmination of the Science Friday event. All the pre-service elementary teachers who participated in the performance final found the Science Friday experience to be a value added experience that positively impacted their perception of their science teaching self-efficacy. Organizational and logistical details of this innovative approach to an elementary scienc methods course will be shared with presentation attendees
An overview of Generative AI initiatives at Minnesota State University, Mankato (so far)
At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we’ve undertaken several experiments and initiatives focused on Generative Artificial Intelligence. We provided several examples at the Generative AI in Libraries (GAIL) conference. For this presentation, we provided a revised and expanded overview of our initiatives for the Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) Fall General Meeting. We explained license-related restrictions on uses of AI. We discussed the limitations of the retrieval-augmented generation tools currently available in the library. We summarized how we’ve tested ChatBots to support licensing and we showed how we’ve tried to use AI to improve data visualization for collections outreach. We talked about how we’ve used generative AI as a supplemental tool at the reference desk, for instruction, and when preparing for meetings with faculty. Finally, we provided some examples of how we’ve investigated generative AI for data analysis applications
