Metaheuristics for White-box Path Attraction Attacks in Hidden Markov Models
Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) play a pivotal role in fields such as speech recognition, spam detection, and autonomous vehicles, where reliable predictive capabilities are essential. However, the rapid adoption of HMMs has heightened their susceptibility to adversarial attacks. This research investigates inherent weaknesses in traditional HMMs by examining how adversarial manipulation of observable data impacts model performance. We address three core questions: How does varying HMM parameters influence a path attraction problem? Which metaheuristic methods most effectively optimize these attacks in a white-box scenario? What key vulnerabilities emerge in HMMs under adversarial manipulation? To explore these questions, we design HMMs with varying number of hidden and observable states, aiming to maximize shifts in predicted hidden states, while minimizing alterations to observable data. Using the Viterbi Algorithm to measure shifts in hidden states, we employ genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, and tabu search to identify optimal attacks within the vast solution space. Preliminary findings indicate that specific model configurations and attack methods can severely degrade HMM performance, underscoring the need for more resilient models. This research highlights the critical importance of developing robust HMM frameworks—such as scaling model complexity or introducing noise to data—that can withstand adversarial interference, especially in critical applications where security and reliability are essential
Subject-Package Measures to Understand the Value Provided by Journal Packages
At Minnesota State University Mankato (MNSU), we have been exploring new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for journal packages. Most recently, we started developing subject-package measures as a category, including as a measure of utility or as a measure of supply. Although we could previously combine filters per subject and per package, this caused us to narrow data to a single subject. Now, we can display the results for all subjects and packages as one table, which empowers us to make comparisons easily, to understand the value we gain from our packages better, and to see any subject impacts of cancellations more clearly. We only recently developed these tables, but we’d like to share them because we think they are very interesting and potentially powerful. With proper underlying data maintenance, these tables only take 10-20 minutes to make. We’ll talk about previous versions of this category of measures, the current development context, demonstrate examples, and provide tips on how to make them

The absence of accessible permanent supported housing options for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) poses a critical challenge, contributing to heightened vulnerability, increased homelessness rates, and inadequate support systems. Addressing this disparity demands a comprehensive and nuanced response that prioritizes the development and implementation of sustainable housing solutions tailored to the unique needs and experiences of individuals living with SMI. Effective interventions must embrace a holistic approach that integrates housing stability with wraparound support services, including mental health treatment, vocational training, and social inclusion initiatives

Like Grasping at Wisps of Smoke: Interactional and Educational Challenges for College Students with Invisible Chronic Physical and Mental Conditions
Past research has explored the experiences of college students with chronic conditions from a variety of methodologies; however, student-driven, longer-term qualitative data is needed to explore how students with chronic conditions describe the challenges they face in attempting to manage their conditions and succeed in college. The current study gathered qualitative data in the form of daily journal entries over a 14-day period (pre-pandemic) from 23 college students who self-identified as having a chronic physical or mental condition. The themes were discussed through the lens of communication theory of resilience. We envision the management of student chronic illness as resiliency work with a focus on (re)triggering events and forward an additional resilience process to the five original processes in CTR—protective avoidance
