Predicting Watermelon Sweetness from Induced Vibrational Frequencies
The current project focused on gathering additional audio signals from thumping watermelons to improve the correlation between the sound produced and the predicted sugar concentration of the watermelon. The audio signals are converted to harmonic frequencies using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and then combined with a few physical properties of the watermelon for processing. The resulting analysis yields coefficients for a linear regression model to predict the sweetness of a watermelon. Data was collected in MATLAB on a PC and on a developed prototype iPhone app, “Dr. Thump”

Liberating the Woman: Feminism in Korean Dramas
In my ventures throughout Korean dramas, or k-dramas as they are less formally known, I’ve noticed how poorly many of the female characters are treated in their romantic relationships, depictions of violence being glorified as something the male characters are doing out of love rather than selfishness. These abusive behaviors have waned out of popularity in recent years, though there are still underlying elements of patriarchal values in modern k-dramas, the female characters having to adhere to strict societal standards like chastity, modesty, beauty, and so on to be deemed worthy of a man’s love. I explored these themes in an essay that I wrote in Spanish, my professor, Dr. Carvajal, helping me research and revise my findings. I will be reading some of what I have researched in Spanish and expanding these ideas in English, so this presentation will be bilingual. While cross-cultural relations are not the focus of this presentation, I wanted to use this as an opportunity to utilize my Spanish in writing and researching as I desire it to be a part of my life moving forward
The Mental Health and Developmental Effects of Bisphenol-A
My directed study focuses on the mental health and developmental effects of bisphenol-A (BPA) on individuals in close contact with the chemical product. BPA is an organic chemical produced in large quantities that is used in the production of many polycarbonate plastics, feminine hygiene products, and epoxy resins that coat some metal food cans. Because of it being everywhere, BPA often leaches dermally and orally into the human body. The physical effects of BPA have been known and observed for years. However, its mental health effects specifically are not as commonly known. Therefore, in my directed study I would be able to research these effects in depth using online journal articles on numerous scientific platforms. I would meet with Dr. Hubbard to discuss my findings and annotate journal articles addressing these mental health effects of BPA every week in her office. At the end of the semester of study, I would prepare to present my findings at Scholars Day in the form of a presentation. My objective overall is to gain further knowledge about these mental health effects of BPA to use in my future career goals after Ouachita
Learning Styles and Gender: How They Influence Academic Performance
The current study examined whether biological sex and learning style had an influence on a student’s academic performance. The participants were asked to take a nineteen-question survey. This survey included sixteen questions from the VARK questionnaire. Three additional questions were added asked for the participant’s age, biological sex, and grade-point average (GPA). The answers were recorded anonymously. These answers were then entered into the VARK questionnaire to determine the participant’s learning style. The results revealed no main effects or interactions. These results are important to studies of academic performance and what aspects can influence it
Ouachita\u27s Batson honored by Arkadelphia Chamber of Commerse
Arkadelphia native Blaise Batson, a freshman communications & media and political science double major, received the President’s Accomplished Youth Award from the Arkadelphia Regional Economic Development Alliance and Area Chamber of Commerce. Batson was presented her award during the 2024 Arkadelphia Alliance and Chamber Annual Banquet, held Thursday, April 11, in the Garrison Center Grand Ballroom at Henderson State University.
The President’s Accomplished Youth Award recognizes a young person in Arkadelphia who has been involved in helping the community through leadership and service. As a student at Arkadelphia High School, Batson was the women’s soccer captain and cheer captain.
