Nell Mondy (You never fail until you stop trying)

As we recognize Women’s History Month this March, we’re remembering some of the notable women in Ouachita’s history. Nell Mondy \u2743 was a chemistry professor at Ouachita before going on to teach at Cornell University. The Nell Mondy Lecture series, along with several other areas of campus named in her honor, continue to show the legacy she left at Ouachita. This blog is a small look at her many accomplishments both in education and the nutrition field. Throughout Dr. Nell Mondy’s life, as she faced the challenges of being a pioneering woman in science, addressing food insecurities in third-world countries and becoming an international potato expert, she often repeated a single phrase to herself: “You never fail until you stop trying.” Mondy had every disadvantage as she entered the world of academics and began her journey in the field of science. She came from a home with a single mother after her dad passed away early in Mondy’s life. Additionally, being a woman in the 1940s posed its own disadvantage, especially being a woman in STEM. Mondy graduated summa cum laude with B.S. and B.A. degrees in chemistry from Ouachita in 1943 and a master’s in biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1945. In 1953, she received a Ph. D. in biochemistry from Cornell University where she taught for the majority of her career

    Divine Simplicity

    Get PDF
The doctrine of divine simplicity is significant because it is fundamental to the way that a person thinks about God and who God is. How one thinks about the simplicity, or non-simplicity, of God will have implications for the way that one thinks about all of God’s attributes, being, and existence. Moreover, the doctrine of divine simplicity is a doctrine that has been affirmed throughout church history by the church fathers, medieval theologians, and both Roman Catholics and Protestants. In fact, some have argued that, until Enlightenment thinking made inroads into Christian theology, virtually all Christian theologians affirmed that God was a simple, uncompounded being. Therefore, this paper will seek to address the doctrine of divine simplicity. It will do so by first explaining the basic claims of the doctrine, along with some implications of the doctrine as these two subjects overlap frequently. Next, an explanation of significant alternate views will be offered, followed by an evaluation of these views. Finally, conclusions will be drawn concerning divine simplicity and the alternative views suggested

Effects of Exercise, Calcium and Vitamin D on Those 65 and Older Living with Osteoporosis

Objective: There are 37 million fractures that occur annually around the world which is equal to 70 fractures per minute (Epidemiology Of Osteoporosis And Fragility Fractures, 2024). It is estimated the mortality rate following a hip fracture is 20-40% within one year (Epidemiology of osteoporosis and fragility fractures, 2024). A literature review was performed to explore primary prevention techniques for reducing osteoporotic hip fractures. This guided the research question: In individuals aged 65 and older living with osteoporosis, what is the effectiveness of calcium with vitamin D supplementation and weight-bearing exercises in reducing the occurrence of osteoporotic hip fractures? Methods: A literature review was conducted using Proquest to identify evidenced based best practices for prevention of osteoporotic hip fractures. A Boolean search strategy was utilized using “AND” with keywords: osteoporosis, hip fracture reduction, geriatric, calcium, vitamin D, weight bearing exercise, and bone mineral density. The article search included filters for full text articles, peer reviewed articles, and articles published within the last five years. An abstract and title review narrowed down the most relevant articles for the highest levels of evidence. Results: Four total articles were selected for review that included; two systematic reviews on weight bearing exercise; one meta-analysis and one randomized controlled study on calcium-vitamin D. The systematic review articles provided evidence for weight bearing exercises, while the meta analysis and randomized controlled studies revealed calcium and vitamin D were effective interventions to help reduce osteoprotic hip fractures. Conclusion: The review of the literature provides evidence that both interventions are effective in the reduction of falls resulting in osteoporotic hip fractures. The interventions prevent bone loss and will reduce hip fracture occurrence associated with osteoporosis. The evidence reviewed supports the utilization of calcium and vitamin D and weight-bearing exercises. These interventions can be adopted as a generalized primary prevention strategy toward reducing osteoporotic hip fractures. Further research is necessary to indicate long-term effectiveness

    Russian Nationalism: Dmitri Shostakovich

Born in the year 1906 in St. Petersburg, Russia, was Dmitri Shostakovich. The son of a piano teacher and an engineer, Shostakovich began playing the piano early in childhood, during which he learned his love for learning music and his love for composition. Less than twenty years after his birth, Soviet control began, and by 1924 Joseph Stalin gained control over the Soviet Union. As Shostakovich rose as a composer, so did Stalinistic Russia. Soon World War II would begin, allowing Stalin and Adolf Hitler to rise higher in the midst of chaos and destruction. It was Shostokovich who stuck to his own beliefs and composed against the ideologies and requests given by Stalin. Over the course of World War II, Shostakovich composed five major symphonies that are widely known as The War Symphonies. These included symphonies four through nine. When writing his seventh symphony, Shostakovich was living in Leningrad, where a siege was about to begin. Now, it is known as the Leningrad Symphony, giving hope to those suffering and avenging the destruction done by Stalin and his army to not only his hometown, but to the world. During the composition of Shostakovich\u27s other symphonies, Stalin publicly persecuted and denounced Shostakovich as a composer. At one point during World War II, Shostakovich was brought in and questioned by the KGB for plotting against Stalin. Thus began his paranoia and timidness. Knowing the risks though, Shostakovich continued fighting for justice against Stalin’s dictatorship the best way he could: through music
