Short-Term Missions and Their Ethical Shortcomings
I wrote on Short-Term Missions... for my Christian Ethics class last semester. Short-Term Missions (STMs), while aiming to fulfill the Great Commission, often prioritize quick results over genuine relationship-building, diverting significant financial resources from sustainable solutions. They perpetuate power imbalances and fail to foster mutual understanding between goers and receivers. STMs lack the long-term, selfless, culturally adaptive nature of true mission work, exemplified by early missionaries like Paul the Apostle. To mitigate their damaging effects, prospective participants should engage in informed cultural study, prioritize relational connections over task completion, and reconsider the economic impact of their involvement, seeking more ethical and sustainable approaches to mission work

Tree Canopy Cover Influences Habitat Use of Breeding Birds at Jack Mountain Wildlife Management Area
Across the United States, bird populations have declined due to habitat loss. To better understand habitat use by birds, researchers observed populations at Jack Mountain Wildlife Management Area in southwest Arkansas. Students at Ouachita Baptist University surveyed 94 point count locations to estimate species diversity (total number of species observed) and species abundance (total number of individuals observed). At each point, students recorded the percentage of tree canopy cover, ground cover, midstory cover, and shrub cover. These variables were used as explanatory variables in multiple regression analyses to determine which variables were influential in explaining variation in species diversity and species abundance. Locations with higher species diversity had higher midstory cover (P=0.003) and lower canopy cover (P=0.020). Higher species abundance was found at locations with lower canopy cover (P
Understanding how to use statistics software is useful to many disciplines including the field of nursing. As a nursing student, I have learned that the statistical analysis performed in this study is applicable to research projects completed in the field of healthcare. The statistical software environment R, and its interface RStudio 2, can be used by anyone performing statistical analysis, creating tables or graphs, and analyzing data. There are many packages associated within R (R Core Team, 2020) that would be beneficial to nurses and nurse management conducting performance improvement projects where they collect and analyze data pertaining to patient care, infection rates, and patient satisfaction

Historically, artists in all spaces have gleaned inspiration from the text of the Bible in order to communicate meaningful stories. The book of Ecclesiastes is particularly rich in its images and themes, and it warrants profound creative contemplation. This project documents the process of crafting 1960s-style folk songs based on this often confounding and ever-beautiful text. This process included close, meditative listening to the works of great songwriters from the 1960s folk era such as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and culminated in the live recording of four folk songs, compiled in the demo-EP Under the Sun: Songs from Ecclesiastes. This project, in a small way, stretches the bounds of what Biblical songwriting can, and does, look like
Peak Aerobic Capacity and Dietary Composition are Associated with the Bioenergetic Profile of Platelets in Children
Background: In the absence of a nucleus, platelet (PL) health is highly dependent on the health of their mitochondria. PL contribute to atherosclerotic disease and ischemic events. Also, emerging evidence suggests that assessments of PL mitochondria health may be used to evaluate the bioenergetic health of vulnerable populations for whom tissue biopsy is not an option.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to characterize the association of measures of PL mitochondria function with markers of atherosclerotic disease and dietary intake in 8 to 10-year-old children.
Study Design/Methods: Children (n = 87) attended one study visit in a fasted state. Anthropometrics, cardiorespiratory fitness [incremental cycle ergometer test, VO2peak (ml·kg-1·min-1)], and physical activity [accelerometers, activity counts (AC), moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA)] were measured. Body mass index percentiles (BMI-P) were calculated using CDC standards. Dietary intake was estimated (Block Food Frequency Questionnaire). PL mitochondria respiration [oxygen flux analyzer, oxygen consumption rate (OCR) (pmol/min)] was measured: a) Basal respiration (B) b) Leak respiration (L) c) Maximal respiration (M) d) Reserve capacity (RC), e) non-mitochondrial respiration (NM) f) ATP linked respiration (ATP), and g) coupling efficiency (CE). The bioenergetic health index (BHI) was calculated. Spearman correlation coefficients were used to measure the correlation of PL mitochondria function with variables of interest.
Results: Children (60% boys) were 9.52±0.86 y/o and predominantly Caucasian (64%). Mean BMI percentile was 75.37±23.52. VO2peak directly associated with L (rho= 0.21, p=0.049) and negatively associated with CE (rho= -0.24, p=0.025). BMI-P, total AC, and MVPA did not correlate with measures of PL mitochondria function. L decreased with increasing fruit consumption (rho= -0.23, p= 0.033), CE was positively correlated with fruit consumption (rho= 0.25, p= 0.017). NM negatively correlated with % fat intake (rho= -0.35, p= 0.0008) and positively correlated % carbohydrate intake (rho= 0.31, p= 0.003). The BHI did not associate with measures of fitness and dietary intake.
Conclusions: The bioenergetic profiles for PL are correlated with dietary composition and peak aerobic capacity. Whether these findings translate in changes in PL activation will be determined in the ongoing MI-Energy study. Funding: This work was funded by USDA-ARS 6026-51000-012-06
