Quantification of Gordonia terrae Bacteriophages using Lysate qPCR
Bacteriophages are found abundantly throughout the earth and are viruses that are able to infect and kill bacterial cells. They are being used in various ways in the medical field and in research labs across the world. The current method, the double-layer agar plating method, is commonly practiced to detect and quantify bacteriophages, and it is a strenuous two-to-three-day process if completed without errors. A quicker method to detect bacteriophages is needed. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction can amplify DNA in approximately three hours. The double-layer agar plating method was compared to qPCR using one-fifth dilutions of bacteriophage GrandSlam lysate to determine which method quantified the bacteriophage most accurately and efficiently. The results of the lysate qPCR revealed this highly sensitive test counts all bacteriophages present, whether they are fully intact and able to reproduce or not. The double-layer agar plating method only produces plaques from bacteriophages that have the ability to infect bacterial cells. The bacteriophages must have their head and tail connected to infect cells. The lysate qPCR does not seem to be able to replace the double-layer agar plating method due to not having the ability to only quantify bacteriophage DNA copies that are able to infect and reproduce in bacterial cells

Under the Sun: Songs from Ecclesiastes
Historically, artists in all spaces have gleaned inspiration from the text of the Bible in order to communicate meaningful stories. The book of Ecclesiastes is particularly rich in its images and themes, and it warrants profound creative contemplation. This project documents the process of crafting 1960s-style folk songs based on this often confounding and ever-beautiful text. This process included close, meditative listening to the works of great songwriters from the 1960s folk era such as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and culminated in the live recording of four folk songs, compiled in the demo-EP Under the Sun: Songs from Ecclesiastes. This project, in a small way, stretches the bounds of what Biblical songwriting can, and does, look like
The Effects of a Four Week ACL-Prevention Program on the McCall Hamstring Test in High School Female Volleyball Athletes
Anterior Cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are prevalent due to athletes participating in sports involving quick movements, sudden stops, and jump-landing movements. An ACL injury happens by a tear at the ligament. Multiple studies have found that women have a higher risk of ACL injuries than men due to neuromuscular and biomechanical factors. Specifically, during jump landing the following risk factors were found decreased knee and hip flexion, increased quadriceps dominance vs. hamstring muscles being used, and valgus knee compared to men. Women rely more on their quadriceps strength more than their hamstring strength which causes anterior tibial stress which can be a predictor for ACL tears. While men demonstrate more strength in their hamstring muscles rather than their quadriceps when flexing their knee and hip.
The reason hamstring strength is so beneficial is to allow optimal strength to fully flex the knee. The answer to ACL prevention is preventative exercise programs that have combined exercises that focus on plyometrics, eccentric strengthening for hamstrings, and balance. Over multiple studies these areas of exercises have been chosen to reduce the risk factors of young female athletes. The goal is to implement an ACL preventative program for young female athletes to strengthen their hamstrings, enhance their jump-landing control, and balance. The purpose of this study is to investigate hamstring strength for ACL prevention and to investigate pre- and post-testing with the McCall hamstring Test involving force plates. The prevention program lasted four weeks which included the baseline testing and the exercises.
This test will be conducted by using force plates called KINVENT K-Deltas, where the participants will place their heel on top of the plate with the other leg laying flexed or flat on the ground. On the two K-plates, the participants will exert as much force as they can through their left and right leg to measure maximum strength in their hamstrings. All the exercises listed were completed by the participants three times a week. The investigators had the participants complete plyometric exercises such as the double leg lateral cone jump. The participants also completed strengthening exercises. The strengthening exercises targeted the hamstrings and quadriceps. The participants participated in leg curls with a towel and seated hamstring curls with a TheraBand. The balance section included a single leg balance on two types of balance mats. Then the participants advanced to tossing a ball while balancing on a single leg. Each week we evaluated how the program was going and implemented modifications to the exercises or by giving feedback. Then lastly, we conducted another baseline test the fourth week and gathered the post data. The investigators hypothesized that the recommended exercises in the areas of plyometrics, strengthening, and balance, will increase the athletes’ hamstring strength as investigated through the McCall hamstring test

The Effects of Light and Hypo-Gravity on the Development and Movement of Dictyostelium discoideum
Dictyostelium discoideum is a prevalent eukaryotic slime mold that has been utilized in many experiments because of its distinct development as an organism. Dictyostelium d.’s life cycle (figure 2) starts as spores which develop into amoebae, which feed on bacteria and when conditions are right, they will develop into multicellular structures referred to as slugs. The focal point of this experiment is to observe the movement and development of the slugs in response to light and the influence of gravity using a clinostat. To conduct the experiment, ten slugs were placed in the center of each lactose peptone plate and were either attached to a clinostat which rotated at 1 rpm or placed in a stationary position inside a clinostat box. Each plate was either treated to white light or darkness for a period of two days. Slugs on the stationary plates showed movement towards the light vector against the influence of gravity. There was little movement downward due to gravity\u27s influence in dark conditions. Plates on the clinostat were not affected by gravity in the light conditions as they moved toward the vector. Plates exposed to darkness and the clinostat displayed little movement from the center

Ouachita Baptist University has reported its highest spring enrollment in more than 40 years with a total Spring 2024 headcount of 1,722.
The university has sustained momentum in student recruitment and retention, maintaining steady growth with a total enrollment surge of 20% since 2016 in contrast to reports of declining enrollment in colleges and universities nationwide
