Writing with Light: Analyzing the Technical and Creative Significance of Light in Photography
Light is an important aspect of photography. This thesis explores the use of light, and how it is used technically as well as creatively by photographers
Characterization of Bacteriophage Infection of Gordonia Species Utilizing an Optical Density-Based Approach
Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and replicate within bacterial hosts; phage-host interactions, including successful infections, play a role in shaping bacterial populations. This research aims to describe bacteriophage infection in Gordonia, a soil actinomycete. The infection efficacy of a phage is determined by analyzing the growth of infected bacteria and comparing it to an uninfected host. Optical density measurements are used to describe bacterial growth, with virus infection metrics determined by analyzing optical density values of uninfected and infected cultures over time. These experiments evaluated temperate Gordonia phages Goib, GrandSlam, and Ruthy on host species Gordonia terrae CAG3, Gordonia lacunae, and Gordonia rubripertincta. Preliminary results confirm findings previously observed in phage lambda, that temperate phages “choose” lysogeny over lysis at a high multiplicity of infection. This research will provide insights into how phage infection dynamics vary among different Gordonia host species, contributing to the understanding of phage-host interactions. The outcomes have implications for fields such as microbial ecology and phage biology, furthering our knowledge of phage infection dynamics and bacteriophage-host interactions
Celebrating Juneteenth
Today we pause to celebrate one of the most recently acquired federal holidays; yet, it has been in the making for 156 years. What created the first Watch Night Service was the same event that declared all African Americans free from bondage. That service was held on Dec. 31, 1862, just a few hours before midnight.
The purpose of this initial Watch Night Service was to pray, sing and fellowship, as people who were in bondage for so many years would gain their freedom on Jan. 1, 1863, by way of the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, there are African American congregations that still celebrate this tradition, and with fervor and thanksgiving
Maddy Moore to present senior recital March 8
Maddy Moore, a musical theatre major from Mesquite, Texas, will perform her senior recital March 8 at 11 a.m. in McBeth Recital Hall at Ouachita Baptist University. This recital is a project Moore has been working on since last semester and will include music, theatre and dance pieces. The performance is free and open to the public.
Moore will sing six songs, dance to two songs and perform two theatrical scenes. Some of her pieces include “Climbing Uphill” from The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown, “I Want to Go to Hollywood” from Grand Hotel by Maury Yeston and “Love/Sick” by John Cariani. Having spent the past year thinking and preparing for this recital, Moore said, “Even though it’s my recital, there are so many people I’m thankful for who have helped me out and have helped prepare me for my performances.
On Writing Three Inches from Death
This presentation is a summary of my experience writing the first draft of a Young Adult fiction novel for my Honors Thesis over three semesters
Analyzing Wisp DNA Sequences and Building Primers for DNA Separation
A bacteriophage is a virus that infects bacteria. Bacteriophage DNA was isolated from a lysate sample, but two separate, unrelated genome sequences were returned. Plaque assays and plaque streaking were used to in an effort to separate the phages. After plaque isolation was unsuccessful, NCBI BLAST and IDT software were used to build unique primers for each of the two unrelated genomes. After receiving the primers, PCR and gel electrophoresis were run on plaques and lysate from each phage to classify each phage in the correct cluster and sub cluster as identified by the original DNA sequencing
The Survivors
Set over 100 years in the future, this story follows the lives of teenagers Alex, Leon, and Paige. The world has been destroyed. In order to survive, humanity has had to learn how to survive in space, in a vehicle called simply The Ship. Lately, however, Alex and his friends have noticed problems occurring on The Ship, indicating a disaster may be imminent. Alex, Leon, and Paige are now tasked with finding the causes of the problems and saving the last of humanity from extinction
