    Clinical findings and a DNA methylation signature in kindreds with alterations in ZNF711

    ZNF711 is one of eleven zinc-finger genes on the X chromosome that have been associated with X-linked intellectual disability. This association is confirmed by the clinical findings in 20 new cases in addition to 11 cases previously reported. No consistent growth aberrations, craniofacial dysmorphology, malformations or neurologic findings are associated with alterations in ZNF711. The intellectual disability is typically mild and coexisting autism occurs in half of the cases. Carrier females show no manifestations. A ZNF711-specific methylation signature has been identified which can assist in identifying new cases and in confirming the pathogenicity of variants in the gene

    MECHANICAL AND FIRE PROPERTIES OF ORIENTAL BEECH IMPREGNATED WITH FIRE-RETARDANTS AND COATED WITH POLYUREA/POLYURETHANE HYBRID AND EPOXY RESINS

    This study was performed to investigate some mechanical properties such as modulus of rupture and compression strength parallel to grain and some fire properties such as weight loss and temperature values of Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis) treated with fire-retardants and coated with polyurethane/polyurea hybrid resin and epoxy resin were investigated. The coatings are based on epoxy and polyurethane\polyurea hybrid resins. Firstly, an impregnation method was applied by using fire-retardants which are boron chemicals and ammonium sulfate before coating process. Oriental beech was impregnated with 3 % aqueous solution of boric acid, borax, boric acid and borax mixture (1:1), and ammonium sulfate. Oriental beech was primed with epoxy resin by using Sikafloor (R)-156, and then coated with Sikalastic (R)-851, a polyurethane/polyurea hybrid resin. Results showed that modulus of rupture and compression strength parallel to grain values of polyurethane/polyurea and epoxy resin coated Oriental beech wood were higher than that of un-treated and non-coated (control) group. Fire-retardants treatment before polyurethane/polyurea and epoxy resin coatings caused to decrease modulus of rupture and compression strength parallel to grain values of Oriental beech in some extent. Weight loss and temprature values of polyurethane/polyurea and epoxy resin coated Oriental beech were higher than that of un-treated and non-coated (control) group. Hovewer, fire-retardants treatment before polyurethane/polyurea and epoxy resin coatings improved fire properties of Oriental beech wood

    The Power of Folk Songs to Reflect Turkish Culture in Immigrant Literature

    Throughout history, Turkish culture has experienced many internal and external migration processes affecting the social, political, social and economic structure. One of them is the phenomenon of emigration to Germany in the 1960s. In the first place, due to the fact that Turkish immigrants are active in many areas in Germany, where they temporarily go for work to earn money, Turkish immi-grants gradually settled in Germany by taking other members of the family and their relatives with them. After this process, the existence and development of Turkish culture in Germany has become inevitable. This immigration phenomenon, which affects Turkish immigrants at many points, has forced the expatriates to live both the Turkish culture they cannot break away from and the German culture when appropriate. This new culture caused some problems, moods and troubles for both Germans and Turks. Turkish workers brought their traditions, beliefs, habits, values and many other cultural elements with them to the places they went. Therefore, the positive and negative consequences of migration manifest themselves on the individual, social and cultural levels. One of the first problems experienced by our expatriates in their foreign lands was the foreign language problem. As a matter of fact, Turkish expatriates who could not express themselves in a foreign culture and language started to sing folk songs because of the need to relieve themselves, to express their troubles, to express their thoughts, to release their feelings and to share. As a result, Turkish expatriates who went to Germany as workers wrote many folk songs. Due to the inability of Turkish expatriates to communicate with people they are foreigners, they have expressed their troubles, longings and sadness in folk songs by satisfying their need to express themselves through folk songs. In this context, the aim of this study is to examine which cultural elements are present in the folk songs written in Germany, how the folk songs reflect Turkish culture, their power to reflect the culture and the way Turks reflect culture. In addition, it was investigated whether the motifs and symbols in Turkish culture are included in folk songs. In order to achieve this aim, document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. In the process of analyzing the documents, the method of hermeneutics was used. In the study, data were obtained from the source published under the title of "Alamanian Folk Songs", which served the purpose of the research and compiled by Ozturk by using maximum diversity sampling. A total of 49 folk songs were examined. Cultural inferences have been made from the style and language of the folk songs. According to the findings obtained in the study, geographical features in folk songs, place names, animal and food names, values existing in Turkish culture, Turkish dress styles, family structure, religious elements, idioms, local discourse styles, linguistic uses, wars, traditions related to belief, it has been observed that many cultural factors such as historical and social events were reflected in folk songs. In the study, it was also emphasized that in addition to the existing Turkish culture in German folk songs, the cultural changes that took place over time were also included in the folk songs

    Subaqueous fault scarps of the North Anatolian Fault in the Gulf of Saros (NE Aegean); where is the western limit of the 1912 Mürefte-Åžarköy earthquake rupture?

    The westernmost segment of the North Anatolian fault in NW Turkey lies mostly offshore, in the Sea of Marmara and the Gulf of Saros (NE Aegean), respectively to the E and W of a 45 km inland central portion. The 9 August 1912 Mürefte-Åžarköy (Ms 7.4) and 13 September 1912 (Ms 6.8) earthquakes occurred along this segment. To date, the segment was studied mostly onshore although estimated magnitude and location suggest an offshore extension. Recent studies show the eastern rupture extension in the Sea of Marmara, while its western counterpart in the Gulf of Saros remains less documented. Here we use new observations from high-resolution marine geophysical data (multibeam bathymetry, side-scan-sonar, and seismic reflection profiles), to constrain the offshore 1912 ruptures in the Gulf of Saros. Detailed mapping of the subaqueous fine-scale morphology and structure of the fault provides a new insight for the western limit of the two 1912 surface ruptures. Distribution of fresh scarps, 3-D structural reconstructions, the complexity of fault segments, and the recent seismicity, altogether suggest that the western termination of the 1912 rupture(s) ends 37 km offshore in the Gulf of Saros. Following the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake, in the eastern Sea of Marmara, the unruptured segment length between the 1999 and 1912 ruptures became a critical issue, because of its implication for future earthquakes in the so-called Marmara seismic gap. If a 150-160 km total rupture length for the two 1912 earthquakes is assumed, a western rupture termination point at the inner Saros basin margin means that the eastern extension of the 9 August earthquake rupture reached the Central Marmara Basin. This outcome necessarily has implications for the seismic hazard in the Marmara coastal area that includes the Istanbul metropolitan area

    The motherhood wage penalty in Turkey

    Women with children, on average, earn lower wages than those who do not have children. This is called the "motherhood wage penalty". This study provides estimates of the wage penalty for working mothers in Turkey using the Turkish Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS), 2014-2018. The gross wage penalty is 21.3 percent, but it is entirely explained by human capital variables: education, marital status, and potential experience in the pooled cross-section. The bulk of the gross penalty is attributable to the higher educational attainment of the subsample of non-mothers compared to mothers. When the wage-setting mechanisms in the public versus private sectors, and differences in fertility exposure by age cohort conditional on education are accounted for, a clearer picture emerges. Empirical findings indicate that the wage penalty does not exist for mothers employed in the public sector but that there is a 3 percent penalty for mothers working in the private sector, with the highest value being 6.1 percent for university-educated young mothers. In addition, wage losses are higher for the younger age cohort, presumably due to leaves of absence from work for time spent caring for young children, which lead to skill erosion

    Attitudes can be defined as general evaluations of the objects, ideas, and people that an individual encounters in his or her life or, a cognitive process involving positive or negative evaluations of an individual towards a specific object. Attitudes guide the thoughts, behaviors, and even feelings of an individual. In other words, this process can also affect the individual’s behavior towards an object. Attitude change refers to the change in the direction and the intensity of the individual’s attitude towards an object of attitude. Due to the functional value of attitudes, processes that change attitudes have always been an important topic of social psychology. Travel can be considered as one of these processes. The problem of whether tourism and travel are mediators of attitude change is of great importance in current social psychology research. In line with this, the purpose of this chapter is to examine the studies on the attitudes of host community and tourists, on whether tourism plays a mediating role in individuals’ attitude change and to reveal how this issue is approached in current research

    Anticancer activity of linalool: comparative investigation of ultrastructural changes and apoptosis in breast cancer cells

    Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the world. Many anticancer drugs are currently used clinically have been isolated from plant species or are based on such substances. Linalool is aromatic compounds from the monoterpene group. It is the main constituents of essential oils and show antiproliferative, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the antiproliferativeand apoptotic, effects of linalool in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells were treated with different concentrations of linalool (100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 mu M) at 24 h and 48 h. MTT assay for cell proliferation and Annexin V assay for apoptosis was done. The morphology of breast cancer cells was investigated by light microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The study show that linalool significantly induced apoptosis in all groups as dose and time-dependent (p < .05). Linalool has apoptotic and antiproliferative properties in a concentration and time-dependent manner in breast cancer cells. The cytotoxic effects of linalool on MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells was found to be associated with apoptotic cell death. Linalool was more effective on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells in smaller amounts

    Identifying Potential miRNA Biomarkers for Gastric Cancer Diagnosis Using Machine Learning Variable Selection Approach

    Aim: This study aimed to accurately identification of potential miRNAs for gastric cancer (GC) diagnosis at the early stages of the disease. Methods: We used GSE106817 data with 2,566 miRNAs to train the machine learning models. We used the Boruta machine learning variable selection approach to identify the strong miRNAs associated with GC in the training sample. We then validated the prediction models in the independent sample GSE113486 data. Finally, an ontological analysis was done on identified miRNAs to eliciting the relevant relationships. Results: Of those 2,874 patients in the training the model, there were 115 (4%) patients with GC. Boruta identified 30 miRNAs as potential biomarkers for GC diagnosis and hsa-miR-1343-3p was at the highest ranking. All of the machine learning algorithms showed that using hsa-miR-1343-3p as a biomarker, GC can be predicted with very high precision (AUC; 100%, sensitivity; 100%, specificity; 100% ROC; 100%, Kappa; 100) using with the cut-off point of 8.2 for hsa-miR-1343-3p. Also, ontological analysis of 30 identified miRNAs approved their strong relationship with cancer associated genes and molecular events. Conclusion: The hsa-miR-1343-3p could be introduced as a valuable target for studies on the GC diagnosis using reliable biomarkers

    Oxidase mimicking Co/2Fe MOF included biosensor for sialic acid detection

    A facile amperometric biosensor that included oxidase mimicking Co/2Fe metal-organic framework (MOF) for sialic acid (SA) detection was prepared. Amperometric SA biosensor was constructed on a gold screen-printed electrode via immobilization of Co/2Fe MOF and N-acetylneuraminic Acid Aldolase (NANA-Aldolase) enzyme, respectively. NANA-Aldolase enzyme converts free SA into pyruvate and N-acetyl-D-mannosamine. After this conversion, oxidase mimicking Co/2Fe bimetallic MOF converts pyruvate into acetylphosphate and O2 into H2O2. Investigation of analytical characteristics resulted with the linear range of 0.02 mM–1.00 mM of SA concentration with limit of detection value of 0.026 mM. Sample application studies with developed SA biosensor were carried out with GD3 ganglioside and HeLa cancer cell lines which have high SA concentrations while A549 cell lines were also used as control group. Before detecting free SA, the bound SA was freed from SA sources where every step was monitored via electron impedance spectroscopy. Then, free SA was successfully detected with the amperometric SA biosensor and as a result, more practical and accurate system was developed

    Investigation of antioxidant properties, essential oil, and fatty acid composition of Onobrychisarmena Boiss. & Huet

    Background and Aims: In this study, Onobrcyhis armena BOISS. & HUET was screened for its antioxidant potential, fatty acids and volatile compounds. Methods: Antioxidant activities of different extracts (ethylacetate, methanol and water) were measured using the phosphomolybdenum assay, free radical scavenging assay, β-carotene/linoleic acid method, and ferric and cupric reducing power assay. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also calculated spectrophotometrically. Results: GC analysis revealed that the oil was dominated by palmitic (22.67%) and linoleic (15.09%) acids. Unsaturated acids levels were higher than saturated fatty acids. The essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS system and twenty-two volatile compounds were identified. The identified major components were n–hexadecanoic acid, 9-12 octadecanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid and hexahydro farnesyl acetone. Conclusion: The results of this study show that O. armena can be used as an easily accessible source of natural antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids in food and pharmaceutical industries
