    Twitter Data Analysis: Izmir Earthquake Case

    Türkiye is located on a fault line; earthquakes often occur on a large and small scale. There is a need for effective solutions for gathering current information during disasters. We can use social media to get insight into public opinion. This insight can be used in public relations and disaster management. In this study, Twitter posts on Izmir Earthquake that took place on October 2020 are analyzed. We question if this analysis can be used to make social inferences on time. Data mining and natural language processing (NLP) methods are used for this analysis. NLP is used for sentiment analysis and topic modelling. The latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) algorithm is used for topic modelling. We used the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) model working with Transformers architecture for sentiment analysis. It is shown that the users shared their goodwill wishes and aimed to contribute to the initiated aid activities after the earthquake. The users desired to make their voices heard by competent institutions and organizations. The proposed methods work effectively. Future studies are also discussed

    The Validity and Reliability of the Language Battery in Comprehensive Aphasia Test-Turkish (CAT-TR)

    Aphasia assessment is the initial step of a well-structured language therapy. Therefore, it is reasonable to underline that the assessment tools need to consider the typological and cultural characteristics of the language. A group of international researchers in the Collaboration of Aphasia Trialists have been adapting the Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT) into 14 languages spoken in Europe including Turkish. Thus, the aim of this study was to perform the validity and reliability analyses of the Language Battery section of CAT-TR to ensure the assessment of Turkish-speaking people with aphasia (PWA). The test included 21 sub-tests and yielded six modality scores (spoken language comprehension, written language comprehension, repetition, naming, reading, writing). Ninety PWA (Mean(AGE) = 61.07) and 200 controls (Mean(AGE) = 54.89) involved in the analyses. The participants were stratified into two education and three age groups. The analyses belonging to content, construct and criterion validity were performed, while the reliability analyses included internal consistency, test-retest and inter-rater reliability. Education influenced all the modality scores of the controls, while age-related differences were significant among all the modality scores except reading. It has to be underlined that Education did not hold any significant effects on the language performance of PWA, whereas those younger than 60 showed statistically better performance in the Spoken and Written Language Comprehension modality scores. The cut-off scores for each modality and Language Battery were presented with high sensitivity and specificity values. Compared to the psychometric characteristics of the adapted versions of CAT and aphasia tests utilized in Turkey, CAT-TR is an appropriate test for the language assessment of Turkish-speaking adults with aphasia

    A BOURDIEUSIAN ANALYSIS OF THE CULTURAL DISPOSITIONS OF HOTEL MANAGERS IN MARMARIS

    Araştırma ile Marmaris’teki otel yöneticilerinin kültürel yatkınlıkları, kültürel tercihleri ve beğenileri, tüketim alışkanlıkları, gündelik pratikleri, Marmaris ve turizm ile etkileşimleri anlamak istenmiştir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemleri kullanılmış ve yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşme soru formlarıyla derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Marmaris’te farklı türdeki otellerde yöneticilik yapan 24 kişi ile görüşülmüştür. Görüşmelerin yapıldığı otel işletmelerinin etnografik tasviri ve görüşülen otel yöneticilerinin sosyal tiplemesi yapılmıştır. Marmaris’teki otel yöneticilerinin seküler bir yapı gösterdiği, sınıf pratik ve beğenileri bağlamında Marmaris’teki kadın butik otel yöneticilerinin diğer yöneticilerden ayrıştığı bulgulanmıştır.This study aims to trace the interactions among hotel managers in Marmaris regarding their cultural dispositions, cultural preferences and tastes, consumption habits, daily practices, and experiences with Marmaris and tourism. Qualitative research methods were used in the analysis, and interviews were conducted via semi-structured questions with 24 managers in different kinds of hotels in Marmaris. An ethnographic representation of the evaluated hotel establishments was produced and social typing of the hotel managers was performed. It was found that hotel managers in Marmaris have a secular structure and that female boutique hotel managers in Marmaris differ from other managers in the context of class practices and tastes

    Phytochemical Profiling of Allium subhirsutum L. Aqueous Extract with Antioxidant, Antimicrobial, Antibiofilm, and Anti-Quorum Sensing Properties: In Vitro and In Silico Studies

    The present study was the first to evaluate the phytochemical composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and anti-quorum sensing potential of Allium subhirsutum L. (hairy garlic) aqueous extract through in vitro and in silico studies. The phytochemical profile revealed the presence of saponins, terpenes, flavonols/flavonones, flavonoids, and fatty acids, particularly with flavonoids (231 +/- 0.022 mg QE/g extract), tannins (159 +/- 0.006 mg TAE/g extract), and phenols (4 +/- 0.004 mg GAE/g extract). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis identified 15 bioactive compounds, such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (37.04%), methyl methanethiolsulfonate (21.33%), furfural (7.64%), beta-D-glucopyranose, 1,6-anhydro- (6.17%), 1,6-anhydro-beta-D-glucofuranose (3.6%), trisulfide, di-2-propenyl (2.70%), and diallyl disulfide (1.93%). The extract was found to be non-toxic with 50% cytotoxic concentration higher than 30,000 mu g/mL. The investigation of the antioxidant activity via DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and FRAP (IC50 = 1 mu g/mL), ABTS (2,2 '-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid); IC50 = 0.698 +/- 0.107 mu g/mL), and beta-carotene (IC50 = 0.811 +/- 0.036 mg/mL) was assessed. Nevertheless, good antimicrobial potential against a diverse panel of microorganisms with bacteriostatic and fungistatic effect was observed. Quorum sensing inhibition effects were also assessed, and the data showed the ability of the extract to inhibit the production of violacein by the mutant C. violaceum strain in concentration-dependent manner. Similarly, the biofilm formation by all tested strains was inhibited at low concentrations. In silico pharmacokinetic and toxicological prediction indicated that, out of the sixteen identified compounds, fourteen showed promising drug ability and could be used as lead compounds for further development and drug design. Hence, these findings support the popular use of hairy garlic as a source of bioactive compounds with potential application for human health

    Phloretin, as a Potent Anticancer Compound: From Chemistry to Cellular Interactions

    Phloretin is a natural dihydrochalcone found in many fruits and vegetables, especially in apple tree leaves and the Manchurian apricots, exhibiting several therapeutic properties, such as antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor activities. In this review article, the diverse aspects of the anticancer potential of phloretin are addressed, presenting its antiproliferative, proapoptotic, antimetastatic, and antiangiogenic activities in many different preclinical cancer models. The fact that phloretin is a planar lipophilic polyphenol and, thus, a membrane-disrupting Pan-Assay Interference compound (PAIN) compromises the validity of the cell-based anticancer activities. Phloretin significantly reduces membrane dipole potential and, therefore, is expected to be able to activate a number of cellular signaling pathways in a non-specific way. In this way, the effects of this minor flavonoid on Bax and Bcl-2 proteins, caspases and MMPs, cytokines, and inflammatory enzymes are all analyzed in the current review. Moreover, besides the anticancer activities exerted by phloretin alone, its co-effects with conventional anticancer drugs are also under discussion. Therefore, this review presents a thorough overview of the preclinical anticancer potential of phloretin, allowing one to take the next steps in the development of novel drug candidates and move on to clinical trials

    RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN WORKPLACE MOBBING BEHAVIORS AND REVENGE THOUGHTS: EMPIRICAL RESULTS FROM HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

    Research on the relationship between mobbing in the workplace and thoughts of revenge in the literature is very limited. Therefore, this study aims to examine and better understand the relationships between these two variables. The sample for the study was collected from academics who worked in higher education institutions. Correlations and hierarchical regression analyzes were used to explore relationships between study variables, and the results show statistically significant and positive relationships between mobbing and thoughts of revenge. It is even noteworthy that bullying has a high level of influence on thoughts of revenge. The managerial and research implications and contributions of the study are discussed

    Factors affecting the surgical success of trabeculectomy performed as the first surgery in primary pediatric glaucoma

    Purpose To present the outcomes and factors affecting the success of trabeculectomy performed as the first surgery in primary pediatric glaucoma. Methods Pediatric patients with primary glaucoma who underwent trabeculectomy as the first surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Age, gender, preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), operation age, axial length, corneal diameter, anterior segment findings, antimetabolite used, complications, and 1-month, 3-months, 1-year, and most recent postoperative findings were recorded. Postoperative IOP with/without medication of 18 mmHg or less was considered successful. Factors that may have affected surgical success were also evaluated using multivariate analysis. Results Included in the study were 48 patients, of whom 30 had primary congenital glaucoma and 18 had juvenile glaucoma. The mean preoperative IOP was 36.84 +/- 6.30 mmHg, and the mean follow-up time was 7.95 +/- 6.93 years. The median operation age value was 100.00 +/- 100.83 (median: 60; IQR: 153) months. The postoperative IOP at the 1-month, 3-months, 1-year, and most recent follow-ups were 15.39 +/- 6.88, 15.70 +/- 7.36, 16.28 +/- 7.86, and 17.48 +/- 8.44 mmHg, respectively (p = 0.565). While there were no postoperative complications in 24 of the patients (50.0%), the most common complications were choroidal detachment and hypotony. Postoperative complication development was found to be significant as a factor affecting surgical success in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Surgical success rates for all of the patients were 71.7%, 65.9%, 65.0%, and 61.4% at the 1-month, 3-months, 1-year, and most recent follow-ups, respectively. A significant difference was found between the congenital and juvenile groups in terms of surgical success only at 3 months (p = 0.953, p = 0.042,p = 0.191, p = 0.218; respectively). Discussion/Conclusion The fact that surgical success was partially higher in the juvenile group confirmed the idea that the results of trabeculectomy will be more favorable in patients of older age and without anterior segment anomalies

    Bu çalışma Kavak Dağı (Milas-Muğla)’nın bitki çeşitliliğini tespit etmek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma alanı Davis’in kullandığı kareleme sistemine göre C2 karesinde bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada 2017-2018 yılları arasında toplanan 662 bitkinin değerlendirilmesiyle 54 familyaya ait 205 cins, 341 tür, 7 alt tür ve 3 varyete olmak üzere toplamda 351 takson tespit edilmiştir. Teşhis edilen örneklerden 31 (%8,83)’i endemiktir. Toplam 351 taksondan 2’si Pteridophyta, 4’ü Gymnospermae, 345’i de Angiospermae altbölümüne aittir. Taksonların fitocoğrafik bölgelere dağılım oranları şu şekildedir: 111 takson Akdeniz elementi (%31,62), 16 takson Avrupa Sibirya elementi (%4,56), 10 takson İran-Turan elementi (%2,85), geriye kalan 214 takson da geniş yayılışlı ve fitocoğrafik bölgesi belli olmayanlar (%60,97)’dır.The study area is located in the Milas district of Muğla province. In this study, a total of 351 taxa, including 205 genera, 341 species, 7 subspecies and 3 varieties, belonging to 54 families, were determined by evaluating 662 plants collected between 2017-2018. 31 (8.83%) of the identified samples are endemic. Of the total 351 taxa, 1 belongs to Pteridophyta, 1 to Polypodiophyta, 4 to Gymnospermae, 345 to Angiospermae subdivision. The distribution ratios of taxa to phytogeographical regions are as follows: 111 taxa of Mediterranean elements (31,62%), 16 taxa of European Siberian elements (4.56%), 10 taxa of Iran-Turan elements (2.85%), the remaining 214 taxa are widely distributed and the origin is unknown (60.97%)

    Antioxidant, Cytotoxicity, Apoptotic Properties of Extracts of Andricus sternlichti galls and Their Phenolic Characterisation by HPLC

    Quercus L. galls have been used in Western and Eastern cultures for various diseases in traditional medicine. Galls are also used in the East for many purposes, including consumption as food, commercial inks, leather tanning. In the current study, Andricus sternlichti Bellido, Pujade-Villar & Melika, 2003 galls were extracted in different solvents. The possible antioxidant effects of gall extracts were determined using 7 different methods (β-carotene-linoleic acid assay, Phosphomolybdenum assay, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, CUPRAC and FRAP assay, Metal Chelating activity) to support each other. Total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin amounts of extracts are calculated by using standard curves. In addition, HPLC method used to characterize the phenolic component with 15 different standards. The MIA PaCa-2 cell lines was preferred to identify possible cytotoxic activities of galls. Expression of some genes (Bax, Bcl-2, FAS, BID, caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9, caspase-10, FADD, TRADD) role in the apoptosis was determined to investigate apoptotic effects of extracts. According the results, the gall extracts of A. sternlichti may be considered as a potential source of biological agents for their antioxidant capacity and rich bioactive compounds.
