Cross-cultural adaptation, reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the modified Gait Efficacy Scale in community-dwelling older adults
Background: There are no published studies on the cross-cultural adaptation of the modified Gait Efficacy Scale (mGES) to Turkish and investigated its reliability and validity. Purpose: The aim of the study was to cross-culturally adapt the mGES to Turkish (T-mGES) and to prove its psychometric properties in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: International translation strategies and cultural adaptation procedures were used. A total of 103 community-dwelling older adults (73 women, 30 men) have participated in psychometric property analysis. Participants were assessed using the T-mGES, Activity Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC) and the Falls Efficacy Scale–International (FES-I). T-mGES was recompleted one week later. Results: The mean age of the individuals was 67.8 ± 4.8 years. The T-mGES had strong test-retest reliability (ICC: 0.835, CI 95%: 0.72–0.90). The T-mGES’ overall score had strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s α: 0.961). The SEM95 and MDC95 values for the total score were 6.62 and 18.34, respectively. T-mGES had a strong relationship with ABC and FES-I (r1: 0.899, r2: −0.707, p 0.50) construct validity. On the other hand, factor analysis results proved a one-dimensioned structure of the T-mGES. Conclusion: T-mGES is a reliable and valid questionnaire for assessing gait efficacy in Turkish speaking community-dwelling older adults. T-mGES provides a straightforward measure due to its unidimensional form
Macrofungi Growing in Mugla Sıtkı Kocman University Campus
Bu çalışma, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman Üniversitesi Yerleşkesindeki makromantarları tespit etmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırma alanımız Muğla ili sınırları içerisindedir. Bu araştırmada, 2014-2021 yılları arasında yapılan arazi çalışmalarında toplanan 1295 makromantar örneğinin değerlendirilmesiyle 50 familya ve 94 cinse ait 143 makromantar türü teşhis edilmiştir.This investigation was carried out determine macrofungi of Mugla Sitki Kocman University Campus. Assessment of trace metal pollution in the coastal sediments of Fethiye-Göcek Bay (SW Turkey) and evaluation of pollution sources
This research evaluated the trace metal pollution and the pollution sources in the coastal sediments of Fethiye-Göcek Bay by using the spatial distribution maps, correlation and statistical analysis, which were acquired from 69 sampling points. Spatial distribution maps for eleven elements (namely Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Ti, V, and Zn) revealed that there is an enrichment of the studied elements, especially near Fethiye harbor. Moreover, the contamination evaluation carried out by using different evaluation methods suggests considerable contamination of As, Co, Cr and Ni. There is a high correlation between Ni, Co, and Fe, Even the minimum Ni concentrations are 9 fold enriched relative to the Earth Crust's values. The controlling factors for element distribution in the area are both natural and anthropogenic. The natural sources are related to the weathering of the geological units and hydrothermal activity. In contrast, various anthropogenic sources include coal smoke, fuel oils used near the crowded harbors, urbanization and the increase in the population recently. When the ecological risk of these enriched elements is considered, the level of probability of toxicity comes out to be the highest, which demonstrates that the accumulation of trace metals in harbor sediments should be considered in the near future to prevent any contamination toward biota and human
Comparison of Different Count Models for Investigation of Some Environmental Factors Affecting Stillbirth in Holsteins
Background: The objective of this study is comparing different count data models for stillbirth data. In modeling this type of data, Poisson regression or alternative models can be preferred. Methods: The poisson, negative binomial, zero-inflated poisson, zero-inflated negative binomial, poisson-logit hurdle and negative binomial-logit hurdle regressions were compared and used to examine the effects of the gender, parity and herd-year-season independent variables on stillbirth. Furthermore, the Log-Likelihood statistics, Akaike Information Criteria, Bayesian Information Criteria and rootogram graphs were used as comparison criteria for performance of the models. According to these criteria, Negative Binomial-Logit Hurdle Regression model was chosen as the best model. Result: The parameter estimates obtained by Negative Binomial-Logit Hurdle Regression model in relation to the effects of the gender, parity and herd-year-season independent variables on stillbirth were found to be significant (p<0.01). It was found that while stillbirth incidence was higher in males than females, it was found to decrease as the parity increased. As a result, the Negative Binomial Logit Hurdle model was found the best model for stillbirth count data with overdispersion
Using machine learning technique for disease outbreak prediction in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms
Water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and total dissolved solids are important environmental factors affecting fish welfare. The deterioration of these parameters beyond the tolerance limits causes environmental stress and suppression of the immune system. Moreover, it allows opportunistic pathogens that are always present in the environment to infect immune-suppressed fish and cause serious disease outbreaks. In this study, water quality parameters and pathogenic bacteria profiles were monitored for 1 year in rainbow trout farms operating in the same river basin. Then, a data set was created considering the pathogenic bacteria in the diseased fish and the water quality parameters in the farm environment. Each of the water quality parameters in the data set was first used as an attribute and their order of importance in terms of disease outbreak was determined. Then, using multinomial logistic regression (MLR) analysis, which is one of the machine learning (ML) techniques, the possibility of water quality parameters revealing a disease outbreak was evaluated. C-reactive protein-albumin ratio and procalcitonin in predicting intensive care unit mortality in traumatic brain injury
Background: Prediction of intensive care unit (ICU) mortality in traumatic brain injury (TBI), which is a common cause of death in children and young adults, is important for injury management. Neuroinflammation is responsible for both primary and secondary brain injury, and C-reactive protein-albumin ratio (CAR) has allowed use of biomarkers such as procalcitonin (PCT) in predicting mortality. Here, we compared the performance of CAR and PCT in predicting ICU mortality in TBI.
Methods: Adults with TBI were enrolled in our study. The medical records of 82 isolated TBI patients were reviewed retrospectively.
Results: The mean patient age was 49.0 ± 22.69 years; 59 of all patients (72%) were discharged, and 23 (28%) died. There was a statistically significant difference between PCT and CAR values according to mortality (P<0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.646 with 0.071 standard error for PCT and 0.642 with 0.066 standard error for CAR. The PCT showed a similar AUC of the receiver operating characteristic to CAR.
Conclusion: This study shows that CAR and PCT are usable biomarkers to predict ICU mortality in TBI. When the determined cut-off values are used to predict the course of the disease, the CAR and PCT biomarkers will provide more effective information for treatment planning and for preparation of the family for the treatment process and to manage their outcome expectations
Modeling and Assessment of the Thermo-Hydraulic Performance for a Fish Gill Patterned Plate Heat Exchanger in Biomimetic Approach
Increasing the surface area of the plate heat exchangers (PHEs) has recently been one of the focuses of the industry. Improved surface shapes provide greater heat transfer and also become an important key point in energy saving. In this study, a fish-gill pattern is modeled on the plate surface and a thermo-hydraulic evaluation is performed on it. It is known that living respiratory organs such as fish gills are the natural heat exchangers that provide the best heat and mass transfer. Thus, the focus is on both increasing the compactness and heat transfer and reducing the pressure drop for PHEs. Comparative simulation studies are conducted between the fish-gill patterned PHE and the commercial Chevron PHE for water fluid. The study results show that the heat transfer rate of the fish gill patterned PHE is 15% higher compared to the Chevron PHE while the pressure drop is close. The compactness and efficiency values are also higher than those of the Chevron PHE. It is observed that the pressure consumption is higher because the surface geometry is complex, and the channels are narrow. Therefore, this study can be considered as a guide for the realization of PHE surface shape designs
Sustainability or fun? Recreational angling in Marine Protected Areas
Gokova Bay MPAs (southern Aegean Sea, Turkey) include six different no-take zones (NTZs: Akyaka, camli, Akbuk, Boncuk-Karaca, Ingiliz Limani, Bordubet), in four of which shore angling is permitted (Akyaka, camli, Akbuk, Boncuk-Karaca). This study determined the total catch and size of fish caught in the Akyaka MPA during recreational fishing. In total, fish representing 22 species belonging to 10 families were caught and most of them were smaller than their length at first maturity. The projection showed that the total catch weight reached significant values for recreational angling in the Akyaka MPA. The results of this study indicate that recreational angling may pose a threat to both MPAs and no-take zones, causing them to deviate from their primary conservation goal due to the harvesting of juveniles by recreational anglers
Participation of Active Buildings in Peer-to-Peer and Local Transactive Energy Markets
In recent years, great environmental concerns have led to the transition of the energy sector by integrating distributed energy resources (DER) into the power system. Hence, the former passive buildings of the network are turning into active buildings, which are capable of employing different technologies to store, consume, and produce energy. Furthermore, through the collaborative economy paradigm, end-users are willing to play a more decisive role in the way of trading energy. By implementing a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy market, users in active buildings are able to trade energy directly to one another, which brings valuable opportunities for a community of buildings. These opportunities not only facilitate internal energy procurement but also contribute to the provision of different services for the main utility. Hence, in this chapter, different technologies and potentials in a community of active buildings are investigated, and it is described that how these potentials can be activated through local transactive energy markets
The reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the multiple sclerosis impact scale-29
Background: The purpose of the study was to cross-culturally adapt the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale-29 (MSIS-29) into Turkish and evaluate its reliability and validity in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Methods: A total of 119 individuals with MS were enrolled in the research. The neurologist classified the patients with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). In the initial evaluation, patients completed the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale-29 (MSIS-29), the Multiple Sclerosis International Quality of Life (MusiQoL), EuroQol-5D-3L (EQ-5D-3L), and Beck Depression Scale (BDS), respectively one week later, the MSIS-29 evaluation was repeated. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity were assessed, separately.
Results: The mean age of the total sample was 38.2 ± 10.6 years. The test-retest reliability of both subscores of the MSIS-29 was excellent (>0.80). Internal consistency of the MSIS-29 physical and psychological score was 0.968 and 0.914, respectively. Both of the subscores had excellent internal consistency (>0.80). There was a strong relationship between MSIS-29 physical score with MusiQoL, EQ-5D-3L (index), EQ-5D-3L (VAS), and BDS scores (p 0.50). MSIS-29 physical was moderately related to EDSS (p 0.50). On the other hand, there was a weak correlation between MSIS-29 psychological score and EDSS (p < 0.01, r = 0.300).
Discussion: Turkish version of the MSIS-29 is a reliable and valid tool in individuals with MS
