    Allergen Sensitivity in Patients with Allergic Respiratory Tract Symptoms in Izmir and its Environs, Aegean Region of Turkey

    Objective: Respiratory tract allergies are common chronic diseases worldwide. Allergens have regional differences and vary from time to time. In this study, the aeroallergen sensitivity in our region was intended to be updated.Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, regional study evaluating the skin prick test (SPT) results and information forms of 13410 patients who presented atour institution between January 2014 and March 2020. The relationship of allergen positivity with age and gender was analyzed.Results: The mean age of the study population was 38 years. In terms of gender, 71.1% of them were female, and 28.9% were male. The SPT positivity was 41.1%. Of the 13.7% of the patients had sensitivity toa single allergen, and 27.4% had sensitivity to multiple allergens. The most common allergens were weeds (54%), grass-ryepollens (45%), olive pollen (44%), and dust mites (38%). It was observed that allergen positivity was associated with age and gender. Most of our patients were women, but allergen positivity was higher in men. It was observed that allergen positivity decreased with increasing age.Conclusion: Recognition of regional allergens contributes to protective measures and leverages immunotherapy. This study has enabled us to learn about aeroallergen sensitivity in our region

    Financial model with chaotic analysis

    Recently, it was proposed to use a brand-new set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The system aims to represent chaotic financial activities. Such a system was taken into consideration for various analyses in this paper. For each of the three axes, we first evaluated the nullcline points and then gave the formula for the associated Poincare mapping. With various differential operators, we have analyzed the existence and uniqueness of systems of solutions. We have numerically solved the model using the well-known Nystrom in the case of the classical model and the Midpoint in the case of fractional derivatives

    Reconsidering agricultural credits and agricultural production nexus from a global perspective

    Access to credit has been a key component in protecting a country's agriculture sector against uncertainties and climate-related shocks. Agricultural credits may also increase both agribusiness sectors' and farming-related commercial activities' exposure to world markets. This study aims to investigate agricultural credits' short-run and long-run effects on agricultural production using control variables such as foreign direct investments, inflation rate, and government expenditures. We found that credits to agriculture affect value-added agriculture positively in the long-run; specifically, when agricultural credits increase by 1%, value-added agriculture will increase by 0.19%; that is, an increase in credits to the agricultural sector leads to a significant increase in value-added agriculture, while FDI and government size both reduce agricultural value-added across countries. The findings of the pairwise causation test show that bidirectional causal links exist among almost all variables, validating feedback among agricultural value-added, credit to agriculture, FDI, government expenditures, and inflation. This study investigates the impact of agricultural credits on agricultural production, considering factors like foreign direct investments, inflation rate, and government expenditures. The findings reveal a positive long-term relationship, indicating that a 1% increase in agricultural credits leads to a 0.19% increase in value-added agriculture, highlighting the significant role of credit in boosting agricultural productivity. However, foreign direct investment and government size were found to have adverse effects on agricultural value-added, with bidirectional causal links among several variables, demonstrating complex interactions within the agricultural sector

    Formation of precipitates in off-stoichiometric Ni-Mn-Sn Heusler alloys probed through the induced Sn-moment

    The shell-ferromagnetic effect originates from the segregation process in off-stoichiometric Ni-Mn-based Heusler alloys. In this work, we investigate the precipitation process of L21-ordered Ni2MnSn and L10-ordered NiMn in off-stoichiometric Ni50Mn45Sn5 during temper annealing, by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy. While XRD probes long-range ordering of the lattice structure, Mössbauer spectroscopy probes nearest-neighbour interactions, reflected in the induced Sn magnetic moment. As shown in this work, the induced magnetic Sn moment can be used as a detector for microscopic structural changes and is, therefore, a powerful tool for investigating the formation of nano-precipitates.     Lacosamide exhibits neuroprotective effects in a rat model of Parkinson's disease

    Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects the motor system. Although there are several treatments available to alleviate PD symptoms, there is currently no cure for the disease. Lacosamide, an anti-epileptic drug, has shown promising results in preclinical studies as a potential neuroprotective agent for PD. In this study, we aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effect of lacosamide in a murine model of PD. Methods: Twenty-one adult male rats were randomly divided into the following three groups (n = 7): 1 group received stereotaxical infusion of dimethyl sulfoxide (vehicle, group 1), and the others received stereotaxical infusion of rotenone (groups 2 and 3). The apomorphine-induced rotation test was applied to the rats after 10 days. Thereafter, group 2 was administered isotonic saline, whereas group 3 was administered lacosamide (20 mg/kg,i.p.) for 28 days. Apomorphine-induced rotation tests were performed to assess the effect of lacosamide on motor function. In addition, immunohistochemistry and biochemistry were used to assess the dopaminergic neuron loss in the substantia nigra and MDA, TNF-α and HVA levels, respectively. Results: In rats with Parkinson's disease induced by rotenone, levels of malondialdehyde and TNF-α significantly increased and HVA levels decreased, whereas in mice treated with lacosamide, levels of malondialdehyde and TNF-α significantly decreased and HVA levels increased. The apomorphine-induced rotation test scores of lacosamide-treated mice were lower compared with the untreated group. Furthermore, treatment with lacosamide significantly mitigated the degeneration of dopaminergic projections within the striatum originating from the substantia nigra and increased tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunofluorescence, indicative of preserved dopaminergic neuronal function. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study provides evidence that lacosamide has a neuroprotective effect on the rat model of PD. Further studies are required to investigate the underlying mechanisms and evaluate the potential clinical use of lacosamide as a neuroprotective agent for PD

    Effects of Lunar Phases and Weather Conditions on Small-scale and Trawl Fishery Landings in Southern Aegean Sea, Turkiye

    Several studies have investigated the effect of the lunar phase and weather conditions on animal behaviour. As in other parts of the world, fishermen may modify their behaviour in response to the weather conditions and the moon cycle in Turkey. The main objective of the study was to find out the answer to "Do lunar illumination and weather conditions have effects on trawl and small-scale fishery landings in the southern Aegean Sea?". The study results showed that while cloudiness has a positive effect, lunar illumination, lunar distance and mean wind speed have negative impacts on small-scale fishery landings. On the other hand, the trawl fishery is affected positively by cloudiness. However, lunar illumination has a negative impact on trawl landings. Apart from the effects of the lunar cycle and weather on fisheries landings, other factors such as oceanographic variables, anthropogenic impact and climate change should also be investigated

    Camping: a liminal space as a gateway to eudaimonic happiness

    Camping–a growing niche in the tourism industry–allows participants to have a liminal experience. Using qualitative methods, we examine camp participants’ perspective through the lens of liminal theory. The data were obtained through participant observation and interviews with 27 campers. Camp participants’ liminal experiences are grouped into three dimensions: (1) learning in liminal spaces; (2) increased tolerance in liminal spaces and, (3) the effects of liminal spaces on eudaimonic happiness. Learning and tolerance in the camping experience has the potential to foster happiness, even after the participants return home. These findings from the Turkish experience contribute to a growing literature on liminality in camps and tourism more broadly

    Safe and Effective Use of Low-Dose Clozapine for Tardive Dyskinesia in a Patient with Schizophrenia and Comorbid Epilepsy: A Case Repor

    Atypical antipsychotic clozapine has a special therapeutic impact on tardive dyskinesia and treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Clozapine also has important adverse effects such as epileptic seizures. For this reason, most clinicians avoid using clozapine in patients with schizophrenia and epilepsy. Therefore, treating patients with schizophrenia, tardive dyskinesia, and epilepsy is challenging. Here, we describe the case of a 32-year-old woman who was already suffering from epilepsy, schizophrenia, and tardive dyskinesia. She experienced clozapine-related seizures. But at the same time, clozapine dose adjustments successfully improved her psychosis and tardive dyskinesia and also stabilized her epilepsy. This case study indicates that epilepsy does not preclude the use of this important agent whenever it is clinically appropriate

    Characterization of Turkish pine honey according to their geographical origin based on physicochemical parameters and chemometrics

    This study was conducted to determine the characteristic properties of Turkish pine honey, which is an important honeydew honey. The geographical classification of the honey was determined by applying carbon isotope, melissopalynological, and physicochemical analyses to 373 samples collected from 47 regions between 2015 and 2017 under controlled conditions. δ13C protein-δ13Choney, C4%, electrical conductivity, moisture, ash, free acidity, color CIEL* a*b attributes, optical rotation [α]20, proline, diastases activities, and sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose, and maltose) were used as physicochemical properties. Number of honeydew elements /number of total pollen (NHE/NTP) ratios were studied at melissopalynological analyses. The results showed that all samples exhibited honeydew properties, and that all physicochemical parameters met the criteria set by regulatory standards for honeydew. However, C4% sugar and δ13C protein-δ13C honey values did not meet the regulatory criteria and exhibited quite wide standard deviations

    Adsorptive Removal of Oxytetracycline Using Polymer Coated Magnetic Nanoparticular Activated Carbon: Synthesis, Characterization and Adsorption Isotherms and Kinetics Studies

    In the presented study, the removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) from aqueous solution by adsorption was investigated onto Active Carbon (AC), Magnetic activated carbon (MagAC), Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene Magnetic Activated Carbon (SBS/MagAC) and poly charbon magnetic activated carbon (PC/MagAC). The process optimization was carried out by investigating the effects of pH, temperature, solid-liquid ratio, adsorbent type, and initial concentrations. The data showed that adsorption reached equilibrium in as little as one hour. less adsorption at low pH values and more at approximately 5.0 values. However, all the materials performed well at room temperature when the situation is examined in terms of kinetics. It was also observed that AC, MagAC, and PC/MagAC are more effective than SBS/MagAC and the initial concentration decreased from 100 ppm to 20 ppm with adsorbents. In addition, at lower concentrations, when 25 ppm and 50 ppm were used, it was observed to 2.5 ppm and 5.0 ppm values. The kinetic results presented that the pseudo-second-order model (r2 ⩾ 0.99) was more effective than that of the pseudo-first-order model (r2 < 0.90). Also, the Intra-particle kinetic model in the adsorption process exhibited two different stages with the diffusion of inter-particle and external diffusion. Adsorption isotherms for all adsorbents were fitted to Langmuir models more effectively than Freundlich models (r2 ⩾ 0.99). Thermodynamics parameters were also calculated. It is seen that OTC can be removed more easily from the aqueous medium by using magnetic and polymeric materials
