A selective approach to stemming for minimizing the risk of failure in information retrieval systems
Stemming is supposed to improve the average performance of an information retrieval system, but in practice, past experimental results show that this is not always the case. In this article, we propose a selective approach to stemming that decides whether stemming should be applied or not on a query basis. Our method aims at minimizing the risk of failure caused by stemming in retrieving semantically-related documents. The proposed work mainly contributes to the IR literature by proposing an application of selective stemming and a set of new features that derived from the term frequency distributions of the systems in selection. The method based on the approach leverages both some of the query performance predictors and the derived features and a machine learning technique. It is comprehensively evaluated using three rule-based stemmers and eight query sets corresponding to four document collections from the standard TREC and NTCIR datasets. The document collections, except for one, include Web documents ranging from 25 million to 733 million. The results of the experiments show that the method is capable of making accurate selections that increase the robustness of the system and minimize the risk of failure (i.e., per query performance losses) across queries. The results also show that the method attains a systematically higher average retrieval performance than the single systems for most query sets

Effects of different storage media on dentin moisture, microhardness, and bond strength of resin composite
Background: In in vitro studies, it is desirable that the storage solutions in which dental samples kept between extraction and experiment should prevent dehydration and have antimicrobial properties. However, it should be taken into consideration that these solutions may have some effects that directly change test results on physical and mechanical properties of laboratory samples. Aims: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different storage media on dentin moisture, microhardness, and microshear bond strength of resin composite to dentin. Thirty non-carious human premolars were randomly divided into three groups: 1. 0.1% Thymol (T), 2. Distilled water (DW), 3. Dry storage (DS) (control) (n = 10). Dentin moisture was measured with a digital grain moisture meter. Dentin microhardness was measured with the Vickers test. The bond strength was measured with a microshear test. Materials and Methods: Analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Bonferroni test was used for statistical evaluation (p = 0.05). Results: Dentin moisture of the experimental groups was statistically higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, the dentin moisture of group DW was significantly higher than that of group T (p < 0.05). The mean microshear bond strength of resin composite to dentin was higher in group DW than in group T and group DS (p < 0.05), while there was no statistical difference between group T and group DS. The microhardness values of all groups were statistically similar. Conclusions: Storage solutions used for disinfection and to prevent dehydration may have negative effects on dentin moisture and bond strength
The Effect of Traditional and Analysis-Based Chemical Fertilizer Application on Corn Yield and the Content of Plant Nutrient Elements in the Leaf
This study is conducted in Muğla Dalaman Agricultural Management Directorate (TİGEM) in 72MAY80 grain and silage maize in the trial area according to purely random trial the randomized complete block design in 3 replications in 2016. The amount of fertilizer is obtained by substracting elements determined by soil analysis from the amount of plant nutrients required for corn yield in -1 in 950 kg. (-1 in 41.5 kg urea). The aim of this research is to determine whether fertilizer application at 4 different rates including the reduction of fertilizer application required for corn yield -1 in 950 kg. by 40% (-1 in 24.95 kg urea) and increasing it by 40% (-1 in 58.1 kg urea) and manufacturer application (-1 in 60 kg urea, -1 in 32,3 kg, 15-15-15 and -1 in 14 kg. KNO3) has an effect on the yield of corn plant and the element content of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), boron (B) and molybdenum (Mo) in the leaf. The urea applied to the soil from the base, 15-15-15, fertilizers are given to the band with the sowing seeder. The urea fertilizer used as a top fertilizer in trial plots and KNO3 fertilizer has been applied with drip irrigation system at 3 different times. According to the research results, the effect of applying fertilizer to the soil according to -1 in 950 kg. corn yield, 40% reductions and 40% increases in fertilizer application, and manufacturer application on the yield of corn and the concentration rate of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), boron (B) and molybdenum (Mo) elements in the leaf is found to be statistically significant (p<0.01). The highest yield in corn plant is achieved in the application of manufacturer (-1 in 1.367,0 kg) and the application of increasing the amount of fertilizer by 40% (-1 in 1357.0 kg), fertilizer application according to -1 in 950 kg corn yield (-1 in 1225.3 kg), respectively, whereas, the lowest yield is achieved in the application of reducing the amount of fertilizer by 40% (-1 in 991.0 kg). Moreover, the total amount of fertilizer used in trial plots is calculated according to the fertilizer costs in 2016 and the price spent on fertilizer is determined in Turkish Liras (TL) and this price is divided by the 2016 corn kg price and subtracting the amount of corn obtained from the yield, and net yield is obtained excluding the fertilizer cost
The Healing Effect of Digoxin on Peripheral Nerve Damage and Its Relation to IL-17/IL-10
AIM: To demonstrate the curative effect of digoxin on peripheral nerve damage with its anti-inflammatory role on interleukin (IL)-17. MATERIAL and METHODS: The study was conducted with 30 male Sprague Dawley albino mature rats, of which 10 formed the control group, 10 were surgically treated and administered saline (group S), and another 10 were surgically treated and administered digoxin (group D). Motor functions and immunohistochemical and biochemical variables of the rats were assessed after therapy. RESULTS: The amplitude of the inclined plane test scores and the compound muscle action potential levels were greater in group D than in group S. Likewise, there were higher nerve growth factor percentages, higher axon counts, and lower fibrosis score percentages in group D than is group S. Lastly, lower tissue malondialdehyde and plasma IL-17 levels were determined in group D, while the IL-10 level was higher. CONCLUSION: Digoxin contributes to nerve healing and neuroprotective effect by demonstrating its anti-inflammatory effect on IL-17. It can be considered an adjunctive therapy for peripheral nerve injur
Characterization of Turkish Astragalus honeys according to their phenolic profiles and biological activities with a chemometric approach
The genus of Astragalus provides a significant source of pollen and nectar for honeybees. In this study, 37 Astragalus honey samples in 8 different regions from Turkey were investigated for the phenolic compositions and antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-quorum sensing, anti-inflammatory and enzyme inhibitory (urease, tyrosinase, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE)) activities with chemometric approaches. Seventeen phenolic compounds and organic acids were detected using HPLC-DAD and levulinic, gallic, p-hydroxy benzoic, vanilic and p-coumaric acids were found to be common compounds in all studied Astragalus honey samples. The ET coded Astragalus honey sample from Erzurum showed the best antioxidant activity in DPPH• (IC50: 12.54 ± 0.25 mg/mL), ABTS•+ (IC50: 4.20 ± 0.12 mg/mL) and β-carotene linoleic acid (IC50: 3.85 ± 0.11 mg/mL) assays. Astragalus honey samples studied displayed moderate antimicrobial activity against Candida species, gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria while they showed high quorum sensing inhibition effects. The NB coded Astragalus honey sample from Niğde exhibited the highest anti-inflammatory activity against COX-1 (76.11 ± 0.80%) and COX-2 (55.98 ± 0.93%) enzymes. The studied Astragalus honey samples showed mild enzyme inhibitory activities against AChE, BChE, urease and tyrosinase. The chemometric characterization based on the botanical origin of Astragalus honey samples was determined using principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA)
Female sexual behaviour and perception during pregnancy: A questionnaire-based study
Objectives: Several reasons including especially the pregnancy-specific physical changes affect and suspend sexual life in that special period of time. Although the latest scientific data have revealed that sexual activity is safe during pregnancy sexual life during that period is affected by several reasons such as the area where individuals live, thoughts and beliefs. Materials and Methods: This was designed as a prospective and cross-sectional questionnaire-based study. Sexual functions were assessed with the female sexual function index. In addition to demographic characteristics, sexual behaviour and perception of individuals were questioned with an additional questionnaire form. Results: The assessment was performed over 171 patients who gave complete answers to the questions. Out of the patients, 54 (31.6%) were in the 1st trimester, 51 (29.8%) were in the 2nd trimester and 66 (38.6%) were in the 3rd trimester. Although the frequency of intercourse was gradually decreasing there was no patient who had not engaged in sexual activity. According to results, the decrease in frequency of intercourse was because of the thoughts of harming the fetus and physical discomfort. Sexual dysfunction was lowest during 2nd trimester. The missionary position was the most commonly preferred position. None of the participants had oral or anal sex. Conclusion: Sexual behaviour during pregnancy is specifically affected by individual changes and thoughts. Although the thought that sexual intercourse would harm the fetus does not prevent sexual activity it is still highly accepted. Further studies are needed to correct these fallacies of individuals and assess country profile
