NMR metabolomics analysis of Escherichia coli cells treated with Turkish propolis water extract reveals nucleic acid metabolism as the major target
AIMS: Propolis is a resinous bee product containing several hundred biologically active compounds. Although the antibacterial activity of propolis has been demonstrated in many in vitro studies, less is known about its mode of action. In this study, we aimed to shed some light on the antibacterial mechanism of action of propolis against Escherichia coli BW25113 using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) based metabolomics approach. METHODS: E. coli BW25113 cells were subjected to different sub-lethal concentrations (0, 2, 4, and 6 mg/mL) of Turkish propolis water extract (PWE). The 500-MHz 1H NMR spectroscopy was then employed to ascertain the metabolic profiles of E. coli extracts. RESULTS: A total of 52 metabolites were identified from the NMR spectra, belonging to 17 main classes, such as amino acids and peptides, purines, and fatty acids. Twelve out of these 52 metabolites displayed remarkable changes at all tested PWE concentrations when compared to control conditions (P < .05). Levels of 28 more metabolites were significantly altered in at least one of the three PWE treatments. The results of partial least squares discriminant analysis showed that there was a clear separation between control and propolis-treated cells and that putrescine, adenine, adenosine, guanosine, glucose, N6-acetyllysine, and acetamide had the highest effect on group differentiation. Finally, quantitative pathway analysis revealed that purine metabolism was significantly affected by PWE treatments. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that PWE inhibits the growth of E. coli BW25113 by affecting nucleic acid metabolism to a great extent. Impact of tourists on urban water needs in Marmaris, Turkiye
Water is one of the most basic necessities of humans, both for survival and environmental improvement. With the ongoing population growth and climate change, limited water resources are being consumed rapidly. Due to the rapid depletion of resources, the problem of water scarcity is also becoming increasingly common throughout the world. In this study, we analyze the current water potential of Marmaris, which is one of the important tourism regions of Turkiye. We aim to determine for how long the water resources will be sufficient to supply the region, along with its relationship with population and urbanization. To conduct these analyses, the population projections (winter population and tourist population) were calculated using the exponential regression method, and the amount of water needed by these populations was also calculated. A controlled classification method was used to associate land use data with population projections. As a result of these analyses, it has been determined that urbanization in Marmaris is much faster than population growth, and the existing water resources will be sufficient until approximately 2045

The investigation of cognition, proprioception, sensory and physical function in stroke patients with urinary incontinence
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate cognition, proprioception, and sensory/physical function in stroke patients with urinary incontinence (UI). Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 53 individuals with stroke (23 had UI and 21 matched controls). The Incontinence Impact Questionnaire Short Form (IIQ-7) and Urogenital Distress Inventory (UDI-6) were used to assess the patients’ UI symptoms. Participants were also evaluated with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Barthel Index (BI), Fugl-Meyer Sensory Assessment (FMA-S), Five Times Sit to Stand Test (FTSST), Functional Reach Test (FRT) and Proprioception Test. Results: FTSST, FRT and FMA-S were better in stroke subjects without UI (p < 0.05). There was a moderate correlation between IIQ-7 with FMA-S, FTSST and proprioception (left extremity) (r 1: − 0.415, r 2: 0.440, r 3: 0.430, p < 0.05) and a low correlation with BI (r: − 0.356, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Individuals with UI had worse sensory/motor function and static balance. Stroke patients with UI were more dependent, had less sensory function, and had worse lower extremity muscle strength and proprioception as the level of urinary incontinence increased. To reduce urinary incontinence, emphasis on motor/sensory function, balance, and proprioception should be considered
Investigating exhaust gas emissions of yachts: Example of Turgutreis D-Marin
Yachts emit harmful gases to human health and the environment into the atmosphere and marinas and surrounding vicinity are the most affected regions by these pollutants. This study applied a bottom-up approach involving emission factors to make an anthropogenic emissions inventory of yachts and to offer solutions for reducing emissions by investigating the NMVOC, NOx, NH3, CO, and PM emissions from 2002 yacht movements between June 1 and August 31, 2019 at Turgutreis D-Marin in Bodrum Turkey. These emissions are categorized based on yacht operation modes and types. Quarterly yachting emissions are estimated as 3099 tons for NMVOC, 0.003 tons for NH3, 14,526 tons for NOx, 1896 tons for PM, and 15,576 tons for CO

Logistic relationship regression of independent analysis is variable(s) amethod with to determine dependent the variable, reason-result which has binary or multiple categorical structures. In this study, sex of calf, parity and calving year-season effects on stillbirth were analyzed with binary logistic regression analysis. Study material was obtained from the USA National Association of Animal Breeders collected among 2003-2005 with a total of 404460 birth records of single born calves. According to the results, sex of calf, parity and calving year-season effects on stillbirth were found statistically significant (P[removed]0.12). When all variables were analyzed together in the same model, stillbirth rate of female calves compared to male calves was found to be more than 1.03 times higher. In addition, risk of stillbirth was decreased by increasing parity. On the other hand, the risk of stillbirth in summer calves was found to be higher than winter calves. In our country, data sets on stillbirth rates should be collected and risk factors that have an effect on stillbirth must be detected and then calf deaths could be controlled here, too
A Retrospective, Single-Center Study Analyzing Kidney Functions in Sarcoidosis
Objective: Sarcoidosis is a complex chronic disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by non-caseating granulomas. Lung and lymph node involvement is most common; however, various kidney function disorders may occur in these patients. This study aimed to investigate kidney and rarely assessed features in patients with sarcoidosis. Methods: This study evaluated pulmonary sarcoidosis patients aged 18 years and over, who presented to the nephrology outpatient clinic of SBU Tepecik Training and Research Hospital. In addition to the general sarcoidosis parameters, serum 25(OH)D level, tubular functions, and aortic arch calcification were also investigated. Results: Our study included 105 patients, of whom 74 (70.5%) were females and 31 (29.5%) were males. The mean age was 46.78 ± 12.54 years. The history of nephrolithiasis was present in 21 (20%) and aortic calcification was determined in 18 (17.1%) patients. The 25(OH)D level was below 20 ng/mL in 75 (71.4%) patients, and 21 (20%) patients were hypercalcemic. Smoking history was determined in 24 (22.9%) patients, and 25(OH)D levels (cut-off 20 ng/mL) were higher in smokers than non-smokers. Additionally, a rare finding of asymptomatic renal tubular acidosis was detected in 4 (3.8%) patients. The 24-hour urine calcium excretion was >250 mg/day in 27 (25.7%) patients, and 40 (38.1%) patients were hypercalcemic and/or hypercalciuric. Conclusion: Our study revealed a low 25(OH)D level. The incidence of aortic arch calcification as a possible marker of atherosclerosis was also higher than expected and the frequency was higher in patients with higher 25(OH)D levels. As a rarely examined entity in patients with sarcoidosis, renal tubular acidosis type I was detected in 4 patients. Beyond classical kidney findings other features should be analyzed in sarcoidosis
The reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the self-administered neck mobility assessment tool (s-rom-neck) in patients with chronic neck pain
Background/aim: The self-administered neck mobility assessment tool (S-ROM-Neck) is the subjective cervical region range of motion (S-ROM) assessment scale. The study aimed to demonstrate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the S-ROM-Neck in patients with chronic neck pain. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 60 chronic neck pain patients in the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic of Pamukkale University Hospital between January and August 2021. The mean age of the individuals was 34.1 ± 9.9 years. Patients were assessed with S-ROM-Neck twice to prove the test-retest reliability. In addition, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Neck Disability Index (NDI) and bubble inclinometer measurement were used to analyze the construct validity of S-ROM-Neck. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficients of the S-ROM-Neck were higher than 0.80 (ICC > 80, CI: 0.90–98). The internal consistency of the S-ROM-Neck total score was within the acceptable limits (α = 0.754). Construct validity was high regarding the correlation analysis (r > 0.05, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Turkish S-ROM-Neck is a valid and reliable tool to assess the S-ROM of individuals with chronic neck pain
Predicting the Ultimate Properties of Engineered Cementitious Composites by Maturity Method
This study examines the application of the maturity method to obtain the ultimate properties of ECC. Within the scope of the study, the maturity method according to the Arrhenius equation was applied to four different ECC mixtures encountered in the literature: the activation energies and the ages at which they achieve ultimate properties were determined. Subsequently, the mixtures were subjected to standard and accelerated curing to reach an equivalent age of 1 year. The properties of the specimens at 1-year equivalent age were determined after both standard curing at 23°C and accelerated curing at 60°C. Thus, both the validity of the maturity method and the effect of accelerated curing in ECC were evaluated. Mechanically, compressive and flexural tests were performed, while non-destructive tests such as ultrasonic pulse velocity, rapid chloride ion penetration, and resonant frequency were used to determine ECC properties. As a result, it was determined that all ECC mixtures achieved their ultimate properties in less than a year. Furthermore, it was revealed that ECC retains its distinctive properties even in the ultimate state. Additionally, while accelerated curing led to a slight decrease in all properties compared to normal curing, it contributed to a slight improvement in deformation capacity. Nevertheless, considering the proximity of the results between normal and accelerated curing, it can be concluded that accelerated curing has the potential to be applied in ECC, and based on the findings, the maturity method has the potential to predict the long-term properties of ECC mixtures
