    Analysing daytime summer thermal comfort conditions for Turkey's third largest tourism destination

    Tourism is one of the most vulnerable sectors to climate change since outdoor leisure activities are only possible in appropriate climate conditions for them. Among several climate or weather-related factors effective on tourist satisfaction, the concept of outdoor thermal comfort conditions gains importance with climate change because it is the combined effect of all atmospheric conditions on human body. Therefore, tourism-climate indices to reflect the favourability of destinations begin to include this parameter as a component. Mediterranean basin harbours world famous summer and cultural tourism destinations among others and climate change is expected to impact the region which covers the third largest primary destination of Turkey. The aim of this study is to analyse human thermal comfort conditions in the southwest part of Turkey, world-famous summer tourism region using Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) and Mean Radiant Temperature (Tmrt) values and Geographic Information System (GIS) as a tool to show their spatial distribution as a component of tourism climate indices. As the result of the study, the most influential factors on human thermal comfort conditions in the region are mean radiant temperature, moisture content, air movement and increasing dense urbanisation in 12 districts, where meteorological measurements were taken. As the result of the study, suggestions were proposed to reduce the effect of higher PET and Tmrt values on tourists in the study

    Structural, Thermal, Optical and Antibacterial Properties of Co-doped (Dy3+/Eu3+): PEG + PVA Novel Transparent Hybrid Films

    In this report, PEG + PVA + Dy3+:Eu3+ films with Eu3+ concentrations of 1–7wt% were prepared by solution casting method and characterized. The composites were characterized by PXRD, FTIR, UV–Vis, DMA, SEM, TGA and photoluminescence measurements, and also their antibacterial activities were tested by the diffusion method. Thermogravimetric analyzes show that increasing Eu3+ content outstandingly increases thermal stability. Moreover, the antibacterial properties of composites showed strong activities against E. coli and S. aureus with the addition of Dy3+ and Eu3+ ions to polymer blends. Optical measurement records presented that the optical band gap Eg progressively decreased from 4.66 eV for the undoped PEG + PVA blend film to 3.18 eV by increasing Eu3+ ions concentration. Charmingly, the room temperature PL results reveal that the enhancement of the emission of Eu3+ ions in the PEG + PVA polymer matrix after co-doping with Eu3+ ions, whereas the reduction of Dy3+ emission intensity, owing to energy migration from Dy3+ to Eu3+. Besides, according with low-temperature PL measurements indicate that the PL density gradually decreases due to thermal quenching as the temperature increases. With the temperature increased, the color coordinates gradually changed from orange to reddish-orange. These results show that Dy3+/Eu3+ doped polymer blends can likely of a promising candidate in varieties of applications including OLEDs, biosensors, polymer solar cells and optoelectronics devices

    A Case Study on the Lexical Difficulties Encountered in the Translation of Historiographical Texts

    This study discusses the difficulties encountered at the lexical level when translating historiographical texts dealing with certain periods of Turkish history. For this purpose, the paper first explains the concept of input as a subject of study in translation studies and provides information about the types of discourse, including historical discourse. Next, the paper attempts to determine the general features of historical discourse as a type of input and then reviews the research on historical discourse or on the translation of historical discourses. In addition, the article emphasizes the definition of the act of translation in terms of translation studies and presents a summary of the theoretical approaches regarding the position of the translator subject between input and output. Lastly, the paper lists the problems translators may encounter by analyzing the corpus that has been created based on the work 1916 en Mesopotamie by the French historian Fabrice Monnier and seeks an answer to the question of whether historical discourse can be qualified as a technical discourse. This last section also presents opinions on how to solve the problems

    Near-Fault Earthquake Ground Motion and Seismic Isolation Design

    Seismic isolation is one of the most reliable passive structural control techniques with adequately established standards for the earthquake protection of structures from earthquakes. However, it has been shown that the seismic isolation systems may not function the best for the near-fault ground motions, since in the proximity of a capable fault, the ground motions are significantly affected by the rupture mechanism and may generate high demands on the isolation system and the structure. In fact, several earthquake resistant design codes state that the seismically isolated structures located at near-fault sites should be designed by considering larger seismic demands than the demand on structures at far-field sites. When the fault ruptures in forward direction to the site most of the seismic energy arrives in coherent long-period ground velocity pulses. The ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) typically cannot account for such effects with limited distance metrics and lack adequate data at large magnitudes and near distances. For the reliable earthquake design of the isolated structure in near fault conditions that meets the performance objectives, the 3D design basis ground motion(s) need to be appropriately assessed. Measures in the design of the isolation system, such as modifications in the stiffness and damping characteristics, as well as in the limitation of vertical effects are needed. The behavior of the base-isolated buildings under near-fault (NF) ground motions with fling-step and forward-directivity characteristics are investigated with a rational assessment of design-basis near-fault ground motion, are investigated in a parametric format. The parametric study includes several variables, including the structural system flexibility; number of stories; isolation system characteristic (yield) strength, and the isolation periods related to the post-elastic stiffness. Furthermore, the effect of additional damping by viscous dampers were tested for some selected cases. Important findings observed from the parametric performance results and the overall conclusions of the study are provided

    Evaluation of the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Consumer Spending in Turkey by Structural Break Analysis

    The purpose of this study is to investigate and evaluate the impact of the global Covid-19 crisis on consumer spending tendencies in Turkey. The data of the study, which are weekly data, consists of the "Debit Card and Credit Card Expenditure" amounts of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) for the period 6/3/2015–5/8/2022. Changes in consumer expenditures during the Covid-19 pandemic process were examined with the help of structural break tests. The main contribution of this article subsists in an empirical study to examine structural breaks in Turkey using personal debit and credit card disaggregated total expenditure data during the Covid-19 period. According to the research findings; the change observed at the beginning of the Covid-19 period in card expenditures is less than the change observed at the end of the period. With the end of the pandemic, an upward breakout was observed in most of the expenditure items

    Relationship between the insulin use and stigma in type 2 diabetes mellitus

    Aims: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between insulin use and stigma in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Methods: The study was carried out in the endocrinology and metabolic disorders outpatient clinic of a state hospital between February and October 2022. The study was carried out with 154 patients, 77 of them were treated with insulin while 77 were treated with peroral antidiabetic drugs (PAD). The patient identification form and Type 2 Diabetes Stigma Assessment Scale (DSAS-2) were used for data collection. The data were analyzed by using IBM SPSS 26.0 software. Results: DSAS-2 total score, treated differently, blame and judgment, and self-stigma subscales were higher in insulin-treated T2DM patients compared to the patients treated with PAD. There was a positive relationship between the number of daily injections and the DSAS-2 total score (r = 0.554). Multiple linear regression showed that type of the treatment, treatment duration, number of daily injections and perceived level of health were the determinants of the DSAS-2 score. Conclusions: Stigma was high in insulin-treated T2DM patients and as the number of daily injections increased, the level of the perceived stigma increased. We recommend considering the high level of perceived stigma in insulin-treated T2DM patients while preparing nursing investigation

    Assessment of physicochemical parameters, bioactive compounds, biological activities, and nutritional value of the most two commercialized pollen types of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) in Morocco

    The pollen of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is known for its nutritional value and implications as a health-promoting component. Due to its low cost, date palm pollen crushed with its spadix is more widely commercialized and used in Morocco than pure date palm pollen free of spadix. Thus, this study aimed to assess the physicochemical and phytochemical parameters, biological activities, and nutritional value of the two pollen types: Pure date palm pollen and date palm pollen crushed with its spadix. Various physicochemical parameters were determined, including humidity, water activity (aw), total soluble solids, ash content, and color parameters (L*, a*, b*, C*ab, and hab). Additionally, the phenolic compound profiles were analyzed, and the in vitro antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory, and antidiabetic activities were assessed for both pure date palm pollen and date palm pollen crushed with its spadix. Furthermore, the nutritional value was evaluated by determining protein and carbohydrate contents, and mineral and fatty acid profiles. The results have revealed that pure date palm pollen had higher humidity, aw, L*, and hab color parameters than date palm pollen crushed with its spadix, but lower total soluble solid and ash contents. The main phenolic compounds in pure date palm pollen were ellagic acid, rutin, fisetin, and quercetin, whereas date palm pollen crushed with its spadix contained mainly catechin, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and rutin. Moreover, pure date palm pollen showed greater in vitro antioxidant activity, while date palm pollen crushed with its spadix had higher enzyme inhibitory and antidiabetic activities. PDPS was the richest source of proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and saturated fatty acids, while date palm pollen crushed with its spadix was a better source of unsaturated fatty acids, which are mainly represented by linoleic acid. In conclusion, although date palm pollen crushed with its spadix is the most widely consumed type, its nutritional value is lower than that of pure date palm pollen. Thus, pure date palm pollen could potentially serve as a better source of many bioactive compounds, making it a viable supplement for various health application

    In this paper, a novel membership function is defined for fuzzy sets using a supervised learning approach. Firstly, the training dataset is separated using the previously defined polyhedral conic functions in a supervised learning approach. Then obtained polyhedral conic functions are used for defining a new membership function. After that, a new fuzzy classification algorithm is formed to classify fuzzy sets with a similar structure. The algorithm with all suggested methods is implemented on real-world datasets, and the performance values are compared with the state of art classification algorithms.Bu çalışmada gözetimli öğrenme yaklaşımı kullanılarak bulanık kümeler için yeni bir üyelik fonksiyonu tanımlanmıştır. İlk olarak, gözetimli öğrenme yaklaşımında, eğitim veri kümesi, önceden tanımlanmış çokyüzlü konik fonksiyonlarla ayrılmış ve daha sonra elde edilen bu çokyüzlü konik fonksiyonlar yeni bir üyelik fonksiyonu tanımlamak için kullanılmıştır. Sonrasında ise bu fonksiyon kullanılarak benzer yapıda bulanık kümeleri sınıflandırmak için yeni bir bulanık sınıflandırma algoritması tanımlanmıştır. Önerilen tüm yöntemler bir algoritmada birleştirilerek, veri kümeleri üzerinde denenmiş ve performans değerleri, literatürde yer alan sınıflandırma algoritmalarıyla karşılaştırılmıştır

    Reimagining trainee teacher practicum experiences in Turkish K-12 schools

    The practicum is essential in forming a future cadre of K-12 teachers. This study explores experiences of two separate cohorts of students seeking qualified teacher status on teacher education programmes in three Turkish universities. The theoretical framework, using Langdon et al.’s (2012) 12 principles, connects delivery level concerns to systemic issues. Mixed methods gather trainee perceptions of practicum learning, mentoring and school support. School experiences were the least fulfilling; qualitative data evidence a variable picture in the provision of fit-for-purpose mentoring and school support. Findings argue for incentivising practicum delivery by linking macro-level providers - policy hubs, universities and schools - to school-based practicum needs
