    Inter-tissue variability in the stable isotope values of European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus)

    Ecological studies on native and invasive populations of European perch Perca fluviatilis and pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus are often based on stable isotope (SI) analysis based on dorsal muscle, where samples are usually taken from sacrificed fishes. However, other tissues, such as scale and fin tissue, can be used as non-lethal alternatives, where their SI values can be standardised to dorsal muscle values for comparative purposes. In both perch and pumpkinseed, there was a pattern of d(13)C enrichment and d(15)N depletion from muscle to fin and scale. As comparative studies must account for these inter-tissue differences prior to analyses, conversion equations for SI data from scale and fin tissue to standardised muscle values are provided

    The Effect of Core Stabilization Exercises on Physical Fitness Parameters in Child Gymnasts: Randomized Controlled Assessor-blind Study

    Background: The improvement of physical fitness parameters is beneficial for child gymnasts to maximize functionality. Core stability exercises (CSEs) help maintain spinal stabilization during athletic performance. Thus, they contribute to enhancing gymnasts’ performance on various movements and planes. This study aimed to investigate the effect of 8-week CSEs training on the physical fitness parameters of child gymnasts. Hypothesis: An 8-week CSEs intervention could be beneficial for improving the various physical parameters in child gymnasts. Study Design: Randomized trial. Level of Evidence: Level 2. Methods: Thirty-six child gymnasts (aged 7-12 years) were allocated randomly into a training group (TG) and control group (CG). Participants in the TG received CSEs in addition to the traditional program for 8 weeks. The physical fitness parameters of all participants were assessed twice before and after training. Results: The results showed that all participants’ scores of balance, endurance, sprint, and jumping parameters improved after exercise programs (P 0.05). Conclusion: The CSEs training contributed to the improvement of all physical fitness parameters in child gymnasts. Clinical Relevance: The addition of CSEs to traditional training could help improve athletic performance in child gymnasts

    Evaluation of anti-quorum sensing and antibiofilm effects of secondary metabolites from Gambeya lacourtiana (De Wild) Aubr. & Pellegr against selected pathogens

    Background: Microbial infections cause serious health problems especially with the rising antibiotic resistance which accounts for about 700,000 human deaths annually. Antibiotics which target bacterial death encounter microbial resistance with time, hence, there is an urgent need for the search of antimicrobial substances which target disruption of virulence factors such as biofilm and quorum sensing (QS) with selective pressure on the pathogens so as to avoid resistance. Methods: Natural products are suitable leads for antimicrobial drugs that can inhibit bacterial biofilms and QS. Twenty compounds isolated from the medicinal plant Gambeya lacourtiana were evaluated for their antibiofilm and anti-quorum sensing effects against selected pathogenic bacteria. Results: Most of the compounds inhibited violacein production in Chromobacterium violaceum CV12472 and the most active compound, Epicatechin had 100% inhibition at MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) and was the only compound to inhibit violacein production at MIC/8 with percentage inhibition of 17.2 ± 0.9%. Since the bacteria C. violaceum produces violacein while growing, the inhibition of the production of this pigment reflects the inhibition of signal production. Equally, some compounds inhibited violacein production by C. violaceum CV026 in the midst of an externally supplied acylhomoserine lactone, indicating that they disrupted signal molecule reception. Most of the compounds exhibited biofilm inhibition on Staphyloccocus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans and it was observed that the Gram-positive bacteria biofilm was most susceptible. The triterpenoids bearing carboxylic acid group, the ceramide and epicatechin were the most active compounds compared to others. Conclusion: Since some of the compounds disrupted QS mediated processes in bacteria, it indicates that this plant is a source of antibiotics drugs that can reduce microbial resistance

    Frequent Bee Stings May Promote More Severe Allergic Reactions in Children with Large Local Reactions

    Objective: Risk of severe systemic reactions(SR) with subsequent hymenoptera stings for patients who had a large local reaction (LLR) or only cutaneous symptoms is considered to be negligible but recent studies report cases who have experienced more severe reactions. We aimed to evaluate the frequency of reactions that are more severe than previous ones after re-sting for children with hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity reactions.Materials and Methods: Children who had attended four pediatric allergy clinics for reactions due to hymenoptera sting were questioned for previous and subsequent stings by phone call. Number of stings, characteristics of reactions, type of bee were recorded. Whether they had a reaction more severe than the first reaction with subsequent stings was evaluated.Results: By phone call, 148 children who had LLR or SR were contacted. Of these 55 had a subsequent sting after LLR or SR and 49 had had reactions more than once. In 29 patients (59.1%), there was a more severe subsequent reaction. Twenty (52.6%) of 38 children with LLR had Grade II-III SR with subsequent stings. Age, gender, type of hymenoptera, living place, presence of concomitant allergic reaction in children and/or parents of patients who had or did not have a more severe reaction with subsequent stings were not different between two groups. Median number of hymenoptera stings and sequence of the subsequent sting causing the most severe reaction were higher among patients who had a more severe reaction (p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively).Conclusion: Our results show that we may be underestimating the risk of more severe reactions with subsequent stings for children

    CRYOPRESERVATION OF MENTHA PIPERITA L. GERMPLASM AND CONFIRMATION OF GENETIC STABILITY AFTER CRYO-STORAGE

    Peppermint is an important aromatic-medicinal plant species and it has valuable essential oil contents such as menthol, linalool and limonene. The main purpose of the current study was to optimize a protocol for cryopreservation of M. piperita local cultivars (G-74, Candarli and Gomec). The secondary aim was to investigate the genetic stability after cryopreservation using ISSR marker system. Three different single step freezing techniques were compared for longterm preservation of these local cultivars and the optimum regeneration percentages were acquired by using the droplet vitrification technique. The PVS2 treatments of this technique showed succesful long-term preservation of M. piperita cultivars with regeneration percentages of 72% to Candarli cultivar (60 min PVS2), 52% to Gomec cultivar (75 min PVS2) and 62.5% to G-74 cultivar (30 min PVS2) respectively. The ISSR PCR results showed that the genetic stability from cryopreserved M. piperita cultivars were high. While genetic stability percentage was similar to 99% for the Candarli cultivar, for the Gomec and G-74 cultivars the genetic fidelity was100%. The shoots that come from the cryopreserved shoot tips showed normal and health rooting, and all of them were also easily adapted to greenhouse conditions

    Modelling the impact of climate change and advanced agricultural technologies on grain output: Recent evidence from China

    The adverse effect of rising temperatures on grain output is gradually spreading across China. On the other hand, technical developments have resulted in substantial changes in the agricultural production system over time. Hence, we assess the effect of temperature on grain yields in addition to the potential effect of some technological factors using a panel dataset spanning the period 1996 to 2020 for selected prominent grain-producing provinces in China: Anhui, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Jilin, Neimenggu, Shandong, Sichuan, and Liaoning. We apply a novel Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MM-QR) and second–generation estimation techniques, which generate consistent and robust results in the presence of cross–sectional dependency (CSD). The empirical findings from the MM-QR estimator reveal that climate change (via temperature) significantly decreases the grain yields in overall quantiles and the higher negative impact was observed in the 75th and 95th quantiles, while technical factors, irrigated area, and financial support play a substantial role in improving the grain yields in China. In addition, the findings from the D–H panel causality method show the various flows of causal links between the selected variables, considering the grain–producing regions of China: grain yields → temperature, pesticide usage → grain yields, and financial support → grain yields. A bidirectional causality association is observed to exist between fertilizer usage ↔ grain yields, pesticide usage ↔ grain yields, and irrigated area ↔ grain yields. To ensure food security, China's prominent grain–growing regions should strengthen their technological innovation efforts and invest in research and development to produce new varieties that can withstand heat and drought stress and produce better grain yields

    DETERMINING THE RISK OF INTRAOPERATIVE PRESSURE INJURY IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING ELECTIVE CRANIAL SURGERY

    Purpose: Neurosurgical interventions are long and complex, and additional difficulties are encountered in positioning in the operating room.The aim of the study is to determine the risk of pressure injury development in the intraoperative period of patients undergoing elective cranial surgery.Material and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 127 patients who met the inclusion criteria and underwent elective cranial surgery in a city hospital between September and October 2021. 3S Operating Room Pressure Injury Risk Diagnostic Scale were used to collect data.Results: It was determined that 55.1% of the patients were female, their mean age was 53.22 +/- 13.47 years, and 61.4% had at least one chronic disease. It was determined that 71.7% of the patients were operated with the diagnosis of cerebellar tumor. Stage 1 pressure injuries were observed in 37% of the patients. It was determined that the total score obtained from the scale was 14.87 +/- 2.83 and the patients were at low risk for pressure injury. Age, body mass index and duration of the surgical procedure were found to be independent factors affecting the patients' operating room pressure injuries risk assessment scale score.Conclusion: It was determined that the risk of pressure injury in patients who underwent cranial surgery was low level

    Examining the impacts of technological advancement on cereal production in ASEAN countries: Does information and communication technology matter?

    In this study, we examine the effects of technological development (via fertilizer and pesticide consumption) and information and communication technology (ICT) on cereal production in four ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand) from 1991 to 2018. For empirical investigation, this study used advanced econometric methodologies. The estimated results demonstrate the long-run co-integration relationship between the variables. Pooled mean group (PMG)-based empirical results show that technological development (via fertilizer consumption and pesticide use) significantly increases cereal production in the long-run after confirming the long-run association among the variables of interest. Similarly, ICT also significantly enhances cereal production in the long-run. It has been thoroughly demonstrated that technological development and ICT play an important role in increasing cereal production and ensuring food security in the selected ASEAN countries. Furthermore, the findings of the Dumitrescu-Hurlin (D-H) causality test show unidirectional causality from fertilizer consumption and pesticide use to cereal production, as well as bidirectional causality between ICT and cereal production. In this regard, it is critical for local farmers to produce high added value through technological development while also serving as a regional base and supply center in agriculture. To ensure that technological innovations enhance productivity, ICT-based agriculture, and the adoption of technology in the production of agricultural products, governments should promote locally sustainable ICTs, such as mobile phones and Internet-based digital tools and services

    A new 1,2,4-triazine-n-oxide compound: Synthesis, crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis and supercapacitor applications

    In this paper, we report the one-step, metal catalyst-free synthesis of 6-(4-chlorophenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-4-(N-oxide)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,2,4-triazine using 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone and p‑chloro isonitrosophenyl hydrazine and its full characterization including single crystal X-ray analysis. A simple and straightforward method for the synthesis is presented and the compound is obtained in a moderate yield and high purity. It's molecular and crystal structures were determined and found that It belongs to triclinic system P -1 space group with a = 5.9173 (2) Å, b = 13.3113 (4) Å, c = 14.3963 (4) Å, α = 97.583 (2) °, β = 93.207 (2) °, γ = 91.378 (2) °, Z = 4 and V = 1121.71 (6) Å3. In the crystal structure, the intermolecular N–H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into infinite chains along the a-axis direction. The Hirshfeld surface analysis of the crystal structure indicates that the most important contributions for the crystal packing are from H⋯H (48.4 %), H⋯C/C⋯H (16.6 %), H⋯O/O⋯H (13.7 %) and H⋯CI/CI⋯H (11.0 %) interactions. Hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions are the dominant interactions in the crystal packing. The electrochemical characterizations and the supercapacitor performances of the compound were also investigated. Although, the pretreated porous carbonaceous materials or nanostructures provide superior surface enhancement properties in terms of the electrode modifications for a wide range of electrochemical applications, here we found a better performance for the proposed single crystal hydrazone as an electrode modifier
