Get PDFThis is a three-part project centered on the research, historical interpretation, and effective public history programmatic practice focused on the student experience at St. Cloud State during World War II. The project presents historical research and analysis of the student experience, primarily on the actions and reactions to wartime homefront realities, for the campus community throughout the war era. Centering itself in public history, the analysis is then interpreted in the form of a public program based on effective pedagogical practice. In the final chapter the public program is then rationalized, with the pedagogical practices found within the program grounded in interpretive theory and public history practice. A Translational Comparative Investigation of Two Token Reinforcement Systems for ASD Programming
Get PDFDespite the popularity of token reinforcement in applied settings, little research has been conducted on strategies for optimizing its effectiveness in autism service delivery; however, this work is well-suited for a translational exploration. Employing an alternating treatments design, this paper serves as a pilot study, demonstrating how a random ratio (RR) token-exchange schedule can be arranged and compared to a standard fixed ratio (FR) schedule to examine differences in preference, in trial duration, rate, and accuracy, and in challenging behaviors. Two children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) participated during regularly scheduled therapy sessions. During Phase 1, we arranged the random ratio token board (RRTB) to allow participants to draw from a cup of red and blue tokens. Tokens could be exchanged for the backup reinforcer contingent on drawing 10 red tokens or one blue token. This was compared to a static token board (STB), during which the client always had to draw 10 white tokens before exchanging. During this phase, one participant showed a strong fixation on the blue tokens, consistent with a phenomenon known as sign tracking. This led researchers to revise the arrangement of the RRTB so that staff used a random number list instead of different colored tokens to determine when participants could exchange. Following Phase 2, differences in trial rate and challenging behaviors revealed that one participant performed better with the RRTB, despite preferring the STB, while the other participant performed better with the STB, despite preferring the RRTB. Mindfulness Practices Used During Crisis Leadership Reported by Minnesota Secondary School Administrators
Get PDFThe purpose of this quantitative study is to examine the extent to which a select group of Minnesota secondary school administrators report their level of awareness of mindfulness practices, use and frequency of practice, and perceived personal effectiveness of mindfulness strategies used during crisis leadership.
The results of this study intend to furnish school administrators and districts with an understanding of mindfulness strategies and the effectiveness of those strategies to implement during crisis leadership, ultimately impacting the overall well-being of the organization. The findings of the study may reveal select strategies and their importance during crisis leadership as experienced by Minnesota secondary school administrators.
Select voluntary administrators reported their level of awareness of mindfulness, mindfulness strategies, specifically guided meditation, movement, and mindful breathing, their frequency of use and personal perceived effectiveness implemented during crisis leadership. Most study respondents, 89.6% (n =87), reported having experienced a crisis during their career as an administrator and 75.0% of participants reported having an extreme awareness of mindfulness strategies such as guided meditation, movement, and mindful breathing. Participants also reported the use and/or practice of movement as a mindfulness strategy with a frequency of 3-4 times per week to effectively lead during times of crisis. 35.0% of participants reported the personal use/and or practice of these mindfulness strategies to be extremely effective regarding crisis leadership.
This suggests that various mindfulness strategies can be used as an effective way to lead during times of crisis. Utilizing mindfulness strategies during times of crisis encourages administrators to respond with thought-based decision-making skills rather than fear-based decision making. It allows administrators to detach from their fear-based emotions and be present in the moment and approach adverse situations with balance and an awareness of self.

Improved Attending in an 8-Year-Old Boy Diagnosed with Down Syndrome through Teaching with Acoustical Guidance
Get PDFSkill acquisition can be particularly difficult when prerequisites are lacking (e.g., attending to learning materials) that are necessary to expand academic abilities. However, behavioral technologies exist that can help individuals overcome, or at least improve their quality of life despite these difficulties. The current case study used a quasi-changing-criterions-design to examine the effectiveness of a Teaching with Acoustical Guidance (TAGteach) technique to increase attending to learning materials in an eight-year-old participant with Down syndrome. The TAGteach technique was effective in increasing the percentage of trials in which the participant looked at materials and the duration of looking at presented materials during learning trials. Furthermore, results generalized to a leisure task, showing that the intervention was not only academic, but also has the ability to improve on quality of life
