Confidence in Counseling Skills in Communication Sciences and Disorders: A Mixed-Methods Study on Theory to Practice
The current study was conducted to better understand how specific counseling training and engagement in collaborative learning and Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) reflective practice aided in closing the gap from theory to practice to better support communication sciences and disorders graduate student clinicians’ confidence in implementing counseling skills within practicum experiences. This study utilized fixed mixed-methods within a convergent-parallel, exploratory, study situated in the pragmatic paradigm (Cresswell & Clark, 2018; Tashakkori & Teddlie, 1998). The graduate student participants had an opportunity to use their newly acquired counseling skills from coursework and training in practicum experiences in a larger Pilot Program while engaging in IPECP with Community Mental Health and Counseling (CMHC) graduate students and reflective practice debrief sessions after each practicum experience. Both qualitative and quantitative data supported the benefits of engaging in specific counseling training and collaborative learning and IPECP with reflective practice on graduate students’ confidence in utilizing counseling skills with caregivers to support child client gains

The Use of Instructive Feedback for Teaching English and Familial Language Vocabulary to Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Abstract
There is limited research that has evaluated familial language acquisition in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using instructive feedback (IF). There are many challenges that children with ASD face as most of them have skill deficits in the area of social interaction and communication. As most of the applied behavior analysis services are only provided in English in the United States, Language skills are mainly taught in English and English only. In regards to bilingual familial in need of services, the skill deficits found in children with ASD might be further exacerbated due to the lack of services provided in their familial languages or familial language learning. Thus, the purpose of the study is to examine the effects of IF used in tact training on the emergence of untrained relations between English and familial languages. Participants were taught to label the pictures in either English or familial language and IF was delivered to provide information in the other language. The result revealed that using IF, both participants were able to demonstrate multiple untrained relations. Participants tacted the picture accurately in the languages that were embedded in IF. Furthermore, participants gained receptive skills and transitivity relations (i.e., translating between languages without pictures). The results support the use of IF with tact training when teaching language targets to be a time-sufficient and cost-effective teaching strategy
Comparing Reinforcement Systems with Percentile Schedules
This study used percentile schedules of reinforcement – percentile schedule (K), percentile schedule with a dimension (K+) and a yoked control condition (C) – to examine the effects of giving extra reinforcement on the rate of tacting. Six undergraduate students participated in three schedules of reinforcement for fluency of correct tacting answers; they received reinforcement for meeting or exceeding criteria (K), received reinforcement for meeting and exceeding criteria and earned extra reinforcement when closer to the goal then the previous five answers (K+), and earned predetermined reinforcement through yoking for control (C). Celeration values were analyzed for three participants after participants engaged in low levels of errors. One participant had greater average celeration within timing values for the dimension of reinforcement schedule and yoked control and less celeration values for the reinforcement schedule without a dimension. One participant had similar celeration lines for the dimension of reinforcement schedule and the yoked condition than the reinforcement schedule without a dimension. One participant had greater celeration lines for the yoked condition, then the dimension of reinforcement condition, and lowest celeration value for the reinforcement schedule without a dimension. The remaining participants\u27 celeration values were not analyzed due to continued errors or low levels of tacting. Implications of the results and suggestions for further research are discussed
Real-Time Deep Learning-Based Face Recognition System
This research proposes Real-time Deep Learning-based Face recognition algorithms using MATLAB and Python. Generally, Face recognition is defined as the process through which people are identified using facial images. This technology is applied broadly in biometrics, security information, accessing controlled areas, etc. The facial recognition system can be built by following two steps. In the first step, the facial features are picked up or extracted, then the second step involves pattern classification. Deep learning, specifically the convolutional neural network (CNN), has recently made more progress in face recognition technology. Convolution Neural Network is one among the Deep Learning approaches and has shown excellent performance in many fields, such as image recognition of a large amount of training data (such as ImageNet). However, due to hardware limitations and insufficient training datasets, high performance is not achieved. Therefore, in this work, the Transfer Learning method is used to improve the performance of the face-recognition system even for a smaller number of images. For this, two pre-trained models, namely, GoogLeNet CNN (in MATLAB) and FaceNet (in Python) are used. Transfer learning is used to perform fine-tuning on the last layer of CNN model for new classification tasks. FaceNet presents a unified system for face verification (is this the same person?), recognition (who is this person?) and clustering (finds common people among these faces) using the method based on learning a Euclidean embedding per image using a deep convolutional network
Effects of a Global Pandemic on Adolescent Mental Health in Regard to Depression and Anxiety
The COVID-19 pandemic brought on some concerns among teachers and parents. This project looks at 6 studies to determine if there is an increase in mental health in regard to depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety are at an increase across all studies. There are four studies that look at ways to help students with mental health concerns. Telehealth and two varieties of art therapy have been proven to help adolescents with an increase in mental health concerns. Telehealth, virtual therapy session, attendance has increased with patients post-COVID as compared to pre-COVID numbers. Another benefit to post-COVID telehealth therapy has been the increase in participation among parents and guardians of adolescents

Koffi (2019) investigated the acoustic correlates that Arabic L2 speakers of English use to encode lexical stress. This study replicates the same methodology and uses the same acoustic correlates and the same Just Noticeable Difference (JND) thresholds. Whereas Koffi (2019) focused on a general population of Arabic speakers of English, the current study investigates how 10 females Saudi L2 speakers of English who are college professors encode lexical stress. Do they encode lexical stress similarly or differently from the group that Koffi (2019) investigated? What does this entail for the acquisition of suprasegmentals in L2 English
Is Intensity (Decibel Levels) the Most Aversive Correlate in Infant Cry?: Preliminary and Exploratory Results
Scholarly accounts of infant cry began in earnest in the late 1960s. Subsequent studies have focused on creating a typology of cries in order to correlate them with specific pediatric behaviors or ailments. Instrumental acoustic phonetic tools have often been summoned to validate impressionistic assessments. However, because most pediatric scientists lack adequate preparation in acoustic phonetics, they often failed to measure the features that are acoustically salient. This paper examines past practices and proposes a new methodology that can set infant cry research on a solid acoustic phonetic footing. The findings reported here are preliminary and exploratory because the corpus used in the demonstrations is limited to one “intense” and one “regular” cry. Even so, the findings are cogent because data is extracted from all three relevant dimensions of infant cry: frequency, duration, and intensity. These findings are interpreted psychoacoustically, i.e., based on Just Noticeable Difference (JND) thresholds that have accumulated over nearly 100 years of auditory perception experiments. It follows from these that intensity, as measured in dB, appears to be the most aversive correlate in infant cry. More data is needed before a firm conclusion can be reached
