Addressing Gender Equity and Equality through Participant Demographics in Behavioral Research

    No full text
The following study aimed to quantify gender equity and equality in behavior-analytic research and to identify significant differences in prosocial learning objectives for adolescent male and female participants with ASD, ADD, and/or ADHD and no intellectual impairment. This was achieved by conducting a literature review assessing participant sex/gender demographics and comparing results against the diagnostic rate of one female individual to four male individuals. Results indicated that over half the articles (61%) had a 20% or greater female participant base thereby representing diagnostic gender equity. The next level of analysis involved determining types of prosocial learning objectives taught between male and female participants, including social-emotional learning, social skills, emotional learning, self-regulation, coping skills, and self-advocacy. Results suggested that research with a higher female participant base focused more on appropriate social interactions with peers and family whereas studies with more male participants focused on self-regulation and educational success

Fostering Inclusion: Examining Cultural Relevance in School Adaptations for Immigrant and Refugee Families

    No full text
This literature review examines how schools can increase immigrant and refugee students’ sense of belonging. Research has addressed what helps these students and what tends to impede their ability to succeed in school. Key themes within this review include culturally responsive teaching, multilingual education, trauma informed care, community partnerships, and building trust with families. Based on research, when schools incorporate culturally responsive teaching strategies into their curriculum, students tend to feel a stronger sense of belonging and are more likely to succeed. Similarly, working alongside families and community groups increases students’ success rates. Most schools, however, face several obstacles such as inadequate funding, insufficient teacher training, and discriminatory attitudes that impede progress towards culturally responsive teaching within buildings. This review highlights the need for professional development, policy changes, and community collaboration to safeguard educational equity. Recommendations emphasize providing schools with the skills and resources they need to meet the diverse needs of students while also strengthening school-family engagement and advocating for systemic reforms that remove structural barriers. This review contributes to the field of educational leadership by offering insights for school leaders, policymakers, and practitioners committed to providing equitable educational for immigrant and refugee students

The Effect of Cognitively-Based Teaching Strategies on Personal Hygiene Practices Among Individuals With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

    No full text
Personal hygiene is how one properly takes care of one\u27s body. Specifically, when addressing personal hygiene within special education, it is essential for both health (e.g., teeth cleaning to prevent cavities and gum disease) and social reasons, such as maintaining a good appearance (TASCC, 2024). For some, personal hygiene feels second nature; for others, it becomes an enjoyable routine built over years of observation and guidance in mastering each step. However, this is not the same circumstance for everyone. Some individuals with disabilities experience significant barriers and difficulties in learning, practicing, and maintaining healthy personal hygiene skills. The challenge is exacerbated when assistance is not available. The challenge of teaching individuals with disabilities the importance of maintaining healthy personal hygiene lies in the scarcity of literature and research-based resources. For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), mastering daily life skills like personal hygiene is crucial for fostering positive self-esteem, building strong relationships, improving job prospects, and maintaining overall health. In the proposed review, data and scholarly resources will examine the importance of maintaining good hygiene for people with disabilities and discuss solutions such as teaching strategies

LEVERAGING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN ACADEMIC WRITING

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken society by storm. Discussions are underway in higher education on how best to embrace it without jeopardizing core academic principles such as integrity, creativity, and critical thinking. A 2023 survey of 1,223 students by Intelligent.com revealed that 46% of the respondents reported using AI for schoolwork. Of the academic disciplines surveyed, 49% of the students used it for English writing assignments versus 41% for chemistry or biology. The preponderant use of AI for English assignments speaks volumes to the uneasiness that many students experience when it comes to writing in the academic genre. This paper demonstrates how the Centaurian Approach to AI use can be leveraged successfully to teach academic writing

St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report, Vol. 26, No. 4

The St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Survey showed new optimism of area business leaders in a survey given after the 2024 presidential election. Other indicators were mixed, however. Leading economic indicators predicts weak growth in the first half of 2025. 44% of survey respondents said their labor costs rose faster than the costs of their inputs and that both grew faster than prices received for their products or services. Only 13% saw their product’s prices rise faster than their costs. 26% reported that their employees were seeking higher salaries by bringing their employers competing job offers. The St. Cloud Stock Price Index reached a new high on the last trading day of November, 2024

Endeavoring For “Reasonable and Good Faith Effort” in Cultural Resource Management

This portfolio presents three projects exploring the concept of “reasonable and good faith effort.” Through the application of reasonable and good faith effort as part of the National Historic Preservation Action compliance standard (36CFR800.4) including the adaptation of new and changing technologies, paired with recently uncovered historical documents, and a deep review of past archaeological methodologies, one is able to gain a much deeper understanding of history at specific sites on the landscape while employed as an archaeological technician with the Black Hills National Forest. The historic Black Hills and Fort Pierre Railroad site was in dire need of a major update to standardize data and verify its location after decades of minor recordings and updates. In 2016 a concerted effort was made to accurately record the railroad grade and assign conditions and eligibility determinations to segments. Likewise, within a year, historic digital maps were georeferenced in GIS. These revealed miles of unrecorded grade, countless features, and whole new sites along the railroad line. More recently, Light Detecting And Ranging (LiDAR) and historical data have aided to both record new sites but also identify unrecorded sites. The combination of remote sensing and field recording continues as new projects overlap with this railroad. For the second project, a simple site update turned into an unexpectedly complex undertaking which resulted from recently updated methodology. As part of this updated methodology, it was required to take a deeper look at the past archaeology of the Flat Meadow site and to determine if additional testing was necessary. Site reevaluation is warranted when a site previously determined to be “not eligible” for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) has not been adequately tested or not tested at all, in a setting which should have been tested. Overall, it had been discovered that more than a few sites lacked justifiable horizontal site boundaries. The Flat Meadow site lacked a horizontal site boundary. This site is located in a prime location and establishing the boundary took far longer than anticipated. The site area nearly quadrupled and the boundary was expanded in all directions. Finally, electing to record and evaluate an overlooked historic shelter resulted in its being determined eligible to the NRHP. Completion of the evaluation allowed for resources of materiel support and funding to be allotted and to begin historic rehabilitation of the shelter. D. Porter and B. Ewald intend to nominate the rehabilitated Dalton Lake Sheltered Fireplace for listing on NRHP. Allotting an additional amount of time while on site and occasionally exerting a bit more effort will generally yield a deeper understanding of an archaeological site. These intentional actions can be described as a reasonable and good faith effort. Yet, the term reasonable and good faith effort can be subjective to a person in the context of cultural resource management. Regardless of this moving target, one ought to try to achieve a consistent and high-quality recordation of each cultural resource when encountered. This portfolio illustrates what can be achieved when applying this compliance standard
