Chinese ESL Students’ Participation and Perception of Teacher Presence in Asynchronized Online Discussions
The importance of computers and the Internet in schooling have never been so significant since the breakout of COVID-19 because online courses have been widely adopted as a substitute for face-to-face classes. Therefore, the study compared students’ responses concerning online and offline courses. The study interviewed two Chinese students enrolled in a Midwest university in the U.S. regarding their perceptions towards themselves, peers, and instructors, and how the discussions are different from face-to-face courses. Participants were asked thirteen semi-structured questions.The findings of the study suggest that the feature of sufficient time allowed in asynchronous discussions could benefit students as they could take time and have their turn to publish ideas, but its lack of non-verbal clues and physical interactions could be seen as a hinder that makes courses less attractive and involved. The teachers’ role in online discussions is depicted differently from face-to-face discussions because the latter requires instructors to be more focused on managing classroom discipline while the former is more flexible and gives the instructor more time to respond. Students’ perceptions towards their teachers suggest that well-designed discussion activities prompting opinion exchange and productive output should be integrated into the courses
Reflected Color and Biofluorescence in the Western Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta bellii)
The broader goal of my thesis research was to see if coloration, either reflected or fluoresced, varied with sex and or body region in Western Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta bellii). In Chapter 1, I compare the normalized red, green, and blue reflectance values, and mean brightness, among male (N = 47) and female (N = 22) turtles from six different regions of the body. These data were collected from multispectral images and analyzed in linear mixed effect regression models. In Chapter 2, I digitally imaged biofluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) or blue excitation lights for those same turtles and body regions. I quantified fluorescence intensity as mean grey pixel values for each color channel and calculated mean brightness. I used linear mixed effects models to analyze those data. I found that sex and body region interact and that both impact reflected color in Western Painted Turtles. Yellow chin stripes are significantly brighter and more colorful in males compared to females. Yellow stripes on the chin and limbs are also significantly brighter and more colorful than the plastral, humeral, or marginal scutes. All individuals biofluoresce under both UV and blue light. Under UV light, peak emissions are in the blue spectrum and average 499.453 ± 3.595 nm. Under blue light, peak emissions average 534.057 ± 2.101 nm, which is in the range of green light. Fluorescence intensity in response to UV light varies significantly with body region. Under blue light, sex and body region both significantly influence fluorescence intensity. Male Western Painted Turtles have significantly brighter biofluorescence compared to females when averaging across body regions. This work does not identify the function(s) of color or fluorescence in these turtles, but it is a step towards a greater understanding of freshwater turtle biology. Western Painted Turtles are sexually dichromatic in the colors they reflect, as well as in their fluorescence in response to blue light. This study lays the groundwork for future studies to test hypotheses about the role of color and biofluorescence in turtles, and it is the first to document biofluorescence in a freshwater turtle
Choosing Read- Alouds in a Preschool Classroom
Abstract
There is a lack of current research regarding the reasoning behind why preschool teachers are choosing their literature for whole group read-alouds. The primary purpose of this study is to identify why teachers are choosing their literature and what, if any, activities were conducted in addition to reading the story. The research was conducted using 5 Minnesota School Readiness Programs. A survey was electronically distributed to forty-five preschool teachers and 8 surveys were returned. Results of this study indicated over half the participants chose read-alouds to correspond with an overall classroom theme. An overwhelming 94% of surveys indicated that an activity was performed in conjunction with the read-aloud

Will Minnesota Principals Continue to Hire School Librarians?
The number of school librarian positions are declining across the nation. In order to gain insight into this trend on a local level, two directors of school librarian preparation programs in Minnesota analyzed survey results of 251 Minnesota school leaders to determine what factors impact a principal’s decision to eliminate the position in their school. In examining the results of this mixed-methods study, only 42% reported their intention to replace their school librarian with another school librarian when the position becomes vacant. Others reported that they will fill the position with a paraprofessional (25%), or to hire a technology integration specialist (12%)
Application Development Using Microservice Architecture
Application development has always been a complex process. An application, once developed, also needs to be maintained and enhanced to add new requirements. Traditionally the application has been a monolithic entity. Different components in the application are tightly coupled and making a change has always been challenging. Microservice architecture breaks away from this monolithic approach and arranges the different functionalities as services. In a microservice architecture, individual services are developed to perform one function only.
This report demonstrates the application development process using the Microservice architecture. It explains the design, development, and deployment of a Microservice-based application. Market Place is an e-commerce application that consists of a collection of microservices working together to provide a buyer and seller platform to individuals. This application will allow sellers to showcase their products on this platform. The application consists of the following microservices: Product Microservice, Order Microservice, UI Microservice, and database Microservice. Similarly, the buyers can connect with the sellers directly in this application. This application is developed using the Spring Microservice framework, the services are hosted in Kubernetes. Docker is used for the containerization of services
Testing of a ZedBoard-Based System for EIT Image Reconstruction
Improvements in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) are discussed: first, the extension of our current real-time EIT system to allow for multiple shapes by post-hoc estimation of the image, then the prospect of taking images of a static material, but with the homogeneous and inhomogeneous data taken at two different frequencies. Images with various shapes are produced and shown; the impracticality of using multiple frequency imaging with the current EIT system is also shown. Multiple frequency images are produced with a different, non-real-time system. In addition, the procedure for producing the phantom test material is discussed
