    An Individualized Adaptation to The Timely Transition Game to Reduce the Duration of a Student\u27s Hallway Transitions

    Student inappropriate behavior can increase hallway transition duration and decrease academic time within the classroom. This study used a multiple-baseline design to examine whether an individualized Timely Transition Game (TTG) procedure would aid in the reduction of an eight-year-old’s disruptive hallway behavior and reduce the time spent transitioning between classes. Additionally, a delayed reinforcement procedure was implemented to decrease the latency to on-task behavior within the classroom. The individualized TTG procedure reduced the rate of inappropriate hallway behavior by 78% and decreased overall hallway transitions by 1.4 mins. In addition, the delayed reinforcement procedure reduced the latency to on-task behavior within the classroom by over 1 min. Maintenance probes indicated an additional 40% decrease in the duration of hallway transitions once intervention ended and a 27% decrease of the latency to on-task behavior. These procedures provide an effective means to reduce the duration and rate of inappropriate behavior of a single elementary student by use of an individualized TTG procedure

    Performance Modeling and Optimization for a Fog-Based IoT Platform

    A fog-based IoT platform model involving three layers, i.e., IoT devices, fog nodes, and the cloud, was proposed using an open Jackson network with feedback. The system performance was analyzed for individual subsystems, and the overall system was based on different input parameters. Interesting performance metrics were derived from analytical results. A resource optimization problem was developed and solved to determine the optimal service rates at individual fog nodes under some constraint conditions. Numerical evaluations for the performance and the optimization problem are provided for further understanding of the analysis. The modeling and analysis, as well as the optimization design method, are expected to provide a useful reference for the design and evaluation of fog computing systems

    A Systematic Literature Review of IoT-based Applications

    One of the most well-liked technological advancements in the information and communication technology landscape today is the Internet of Things (IoT) as a global network of machines and devices can interact with each other. This paper provides a systematic literature review of such IoT-based applications. The objective of this paper is to explore the existing condition of IoT Technology and its application as well as to analyze the current research trends on the usage of IoT based applications. Till now numerous research papers has been published in high ranked scientific journals during the last decade. Based on a particular content analysis of the discovered literature, the paper presents a comprehensive classification of IoT-enabled applications across diverse sectors such as supply chain, business, healthcare, smart cities, agriculture, and smart homes. The paper also points to the shortcomings identified in the relevant literature, particularly limitations the IoT technology presents and how these limitations spread throughout many industries and sectors. Based on findings, the paper identifies potential future research topics that are anticipated to be extremely valuable to both academics and practitioners

    Building Terministic Screens: An Investigation of the NCAA’s Communication on Title IX

    Historically, women’s sports have been underrepresented. The sports world has been dominated by male athletics; football, basketball, baseball, and more. It was not until recent years that female athletes received more recognition in media and in organizations, like the NCAA, National Collegiate Athletic Association. The increase in female athletes has led to an increased awareness of gender equity efforts in athletics. The NCAA has a myriad of social media posts, online resources, and more materials highlighting the benefits of Title IX. However, the NCAA continuously leaves out Title IX and protections against sexual harassment. Lack of resources for women’s sports, inequitable policies, and no mention of sexual harassment communicates that it is not a problem in the NCAA and is not relevant to their conversation about Title IX. Although they continue to increase awareness for women’s athletics in general, the NCAA does not have the same awareness to sexual harassment issues faced by athletes. In addition to the main research question, “How has the NCAA removed sexual harassment from the Title IX conversation?”, the thesis will investigate the following research questions: a) Where and what does the NCAA communicate information about Title IX? b) What meaning can be interpreted from the NCAA’s communication on Title IX? c) What is the motivation for the NCAA to communicate the way they do about Title IX? Through analysis of external communications, I will utilize rhetorical tools to investigate interpretations derived from the NCAA’s communication and lack of communication on Title IX

    The Impact of Academic Libraries on LGBTQ+ Undergraduates

    LGBTQ+ undergraduates may use, perceive, and value their academic libraries differently than previous generations, particularly if their campus has an LGBT resource center. This qualitative study employed Vaccaro, Russell and Koob\u27s Minoritized Identities of Sexuality and Gender (MIoSG) Students and Contexts Model as a theoretical framework to determine how and where LGBTQ+ undergraduates find safe space on campus. Through semi-structured interviews with white and BIPOC LGBTQ+ undergraduates, the researcher constructed ecological maps that illustrated how students see themselves within the campus context and the internal and external factors that shape their use, perception, and value of the library, the LGBT resource center, and other campus spaces. Thematic analysis generated strong themes related to safe space, as well as how students use, perceive, and value the library, LGBT resource center, and other spaces on campus. Significant differences exist between white and BIPOC undergraduate definition and assessment of safe space, how that impacts their use, value, and perception of different spaces on campus, and what spaces they identify as supportive for identity development. Significant differences also exist between white and BIPOC information seeking strategies and information format preferences, which also impact how they use and perceive library and LGBT resource center resources and services. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher makes recommendations on how to create a student-centered, inclusive, intersectional academic library through partnerships and shared programming with all identity centers on campus, as well as how to create a safe, inclusive learning space for LGBTQ+ students in a potentially hostile environment

    Because “Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast:” An Examination of Selected Minnesota Principals’ Use of Social Media to Influence School Culture

    The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of high school principals about the impact their use of social media has on school culture. The problem of this study emerges from the lack of empirical research in the field examining the ways in which high school administrators use social media platforms to influence school culture. The urgency in the need for the research is derived from the increased use of social media in education as well as other industry areas. School principals have been using social media for real-time communication and updates, however this study’s focus is on intentional ways high school administrators could potentially influence school culture, creating a more positive, inviting experience for students, families, staff and community members. This qualitative study will employ a phenomenological research design, using semi-structured interviews beginning with six introductory questions and then nine open-ended questions. Participants will be high school principals in the Minneapolis metro area, with at least five hundred followers on a social media platform. The overarching research question guiding this study is, what factors do high school principals consider important while using social media to impact school culture? Results will present school principals’ understanding of using social media professionally and the recommendations suggested for effective implementation

    Chinese Immersion Teachers’ Perceptions of Their Teacher Education Programs

    With the rapid development of language immersion programs in the U.S., the number of Chinese immersion programs has grown to 343 in 2021. Chinese immersion programs demand more Chinese immersion teachers who are capable of using the Chinese language to conduct both language and content teaching. However, a review of literature suggested that limited teacher education programs were founded that focused specifically on immersion, or Chinese immersion education. Moreover, literature review found that there are limited understandings on the Chinese immersion teachers’ perceptions and needs on their teacher education programs. To address this knowledge gap, this quailitative study selectively interviewed a diverse group of Chinese immersion teachers in the U.S. The guided interview explored the teachers’ perceptions of their pre-service teacher preparation and in-service training programs. This study focused on identifying the aspects that were beneficial and needed to support these teachers. The findings from this research could benefit both the Chinese immersion programs and teacher education programs by understanding how teacher preparation and training could improve the overall effectiveness of both teachers and immersion programs

    Parsing Structural and Textual Information from UML Class diagrams to assist in verification of requirement specifications

    Unified Modeling Language (UML) class diagrams are widely used throughout software design lifecycle to model the Software Requirement Specifications in developing any software. In many cases these class diagrams are initially drawn, as well as subsequently revised using hand in a piece of paper, or a whiteboard. Although these hand-drawn class diagrams capture most of the specifications, they need a lot of revision and visual inspection by the software architects for verification of the captured requirements, of the system being modeled. Manually verifying the correctness and completeness of the class diagrams involves a lot of redundant work, and can raise issues due to human errors, for e.g., diagrams not drawn to scale, typeface issues, unclear handwriting, and even missing requirements etc. In this paper, we propose a state-of-the-art technique that pipelines the object detection, text extraction and replication phase to parse requirements incorporated within the user-drawn class diagrams. The parsed output from the proposed system, can be used to keyword-match the requirements in the Software Requirement Specification (SRS) document. We show that the proposed system can localize the UML classes and relationships in the diagram with 100% accuracy and can identify the localized objects of each type with maximum mean Average Precision of 0.8584. We also show that the text can be efficiently parsed from the diagrams with the character error rate of 0.3043
