SECAC’s 79th annual meeting is taking place in Richmond, Virginia, from October 11-14, 2023. Within the broad theme of Crossroads, the conference will celebrate creative and scholarly research from the fields of art, art history, design, and art education. A central part of this celebration is the annual exhibition of artworks by our members at the Juried Exhibition. This year, we are proud to partner with Virginia Commonwealth University for this cornerstone event.
The 2023 SECAC Juried Exhibition will be hosted by VCUarts at Try-Me, a restored industrial space in Richmond’s uptown arts district. Named in recognition of an early occupant of the space, Try-me Bottling Company, Try-me has served Richmond and the region as a space for artists and educators, and housed selections from the contemporary art collection of Pam and Bill Royall, since 2010. As the site of the SECAC Members’ Exhibition, Try-me’s approx. 6,500 sq ft gallery space offers an exciting, contemporary setting for new and traditional media, wall-based (2D) as well as sculptural (floor-based and 3D) works.
Our Guest Juror is Alexis Assam, Reginia A. Perry Assistant Curator of Global Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. Alexis joined the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2021. She is the Assistant Curator in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art which is responsible for the museum’s early 20th-century European holdings as well as the mid-to-late 20th- century and 21st-century collections. Her current curatorial project is Whitfield Lovell: Passages which is organized by the American Federation of Arts in collaboration with Whitfield Lovell, curated

NOMA: Non-Overlapping Magisteria vs. Unity of Truth and Knowledge
No full textOne philosophical option available to the scientist who believes in God is non-overlapping magisteria (NOMA): treating the domains of science and faith as separate, with science and logic used for the empirical realm (fact and theory) and religion for questions of morality and ultimate meaning. At first glance this seems better than an inconsistent or disjoint worldview, which may require accepting mutually inconsistent “truths” or believing one thing in church and another during the rest of the week. In this paper, arguments for and against NOMA are reviewed, and note made of the fractured and/or illogical thinking that it requires. Taken to its logical conclusion, NOMA reserves all reality as the domain of science, leaving religion with the things that “aren’t actually real”. This amounts to an acceptance of the fundamental proposition of scientism, i.e., that only science provides real answers to real questions. Examples from the works of Francis Schaeffer and Nancy Pearcey highlight the problems with the NOMA approach, and contrast it with a unified worldview
A Binary-Based Enumeration of the Primitive Pythagorean Triples
No full textAll primitive Pythagorean triples (PPTs), up to an arbitrarily chosen integer n, are generated by a new binary-based algorithm using the Calkin–Wilf enumeration of the rational numbers. Graphical and tabular displays of the results are provided, including the complete derivation to show the steps from the positive integers n, to a filtered list of compliant natural numbers, to (u,v) pairs, to the PPTs of the form (A,B,C). In graph modes, either (A,B) or (u,v) can be displayed, with points identified. Zooming in on the region near the origin shows that this algorithm is not directly connected to the distance from the origin, but it offers hope that such an algorithm might be constructed
The Relationship Between Test-Anxiety, Test Performance, Metacognitive Beliefs and Self-Esteem in College Students
Get PDFTest anxiety and low self-esteem could affect the validity of certain academic examinations especially if it limits students from performing successfully. There is a need to ensure that students, whose future is often tied to academic success, are adequately educated and assisted in understanding the many layers of internal and external influence that can be in effect. This research will be based on the following question: How are metacognitive beliefs and self-esteem related to test anxiety and academic performance? Essentially, the research is focused on better understanding the tenuous relationship observed from previous research between test-anxiety and academic performance by analyzing the possible mediating effects of metacognitive beliefs and self-esteem. This research will aid in contributing more information and insight to the existing literature on test anxiety and test performance and the mediating variables between the two. As the research expands on this topic more scientifically-based coping strategies can be taught and utilized by students suffering from this form of anxiety
