No full textThe homeless population are known to be more vulnerable to severe mental health conditions and substance abuse due to multiple deficits with the social determinants of health which are comprised of economic stability, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, social and community context, and education access and quality. Due to these deficits many homeless citizens underutilize primary care services which is often a first step for patients when addressing mental health concerns. Primary care is also essential for the monitoring of conditions and prevention of other diseases in the future. This analysis aims to provide essential information for health care providers on how to improve health care delivery and patient retention when addressing the mental health needs for homeless patients in primary care

This article aims to create a resource that allows one to have a basic understanding of wounds and the different ways to manage them. In the article, I will discuss different types of dressings, different debridement techniques, and chronic conditions and the wounds associated with them. The article will also discuss how to manage the condition to help with the overall wound management
Neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN): Outlining the History and Physical Exam, Diagnostic Criteria and Treatments
No full textNeurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by growth of tumors throughout the nervous system. The damage caused by these tumors can be severe and debilitating, affecting quality of life and ultimately decreasing life expectancy. The average age of death for patients with NF2 is 36 years old, and over the course of the disease patients often have loss of hearing and balance, visual impairment, muscle wasting, and neuropathy.1 Accurate detection and timely intervention are essential for slowing speed of disease progression. Due in part to the rarity of the disease, providers are less likely to be familiar with NF2-SWN presentation, diagnosis, and management. Merker et al found that even among neurofibromatosis specialists, level of agreement about NF2-SWN guideline recommendations varies widely from 36% to 73%.2 This article aims to provide a concise and updated outline for recognition of symptoms/signs, diagnostic criteria, and treatment in patients with NF2-SWN
GLP-1 Receptor Agonists as a Treatment for Weight Loss in Overweight Patients
No full textFor many Americans, the ability to lose weight and maintain their weight loss is a lifelong battle. In the United States, 41.9% of Americans are obese, causing an increase in medical costs and an increase in preventable obesity-related deaths. However, those statistics may change with the growing implementation of the FDA-approved medications Wegovy and Saxenda, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA), to treat weight loss in patients who are not type two diabetics. Since the first GLP-1 RA was approved, this drug class has quickly become a household name for the pharmacological treatment of weight management, causing many to surmise if this treatment will be the game changer to help many Americans lose the extra weight and be able to keep it off. This article will serve as a resource to help providers identify the patients who qualify for GLP-1 RA as a treatment for weight loss, provide key information to be shared with patients if they choose to begin pharmacologic treatment, as well as what the latest data indicates with the efficacy of this treatment
Stem Cells and Alzheimer\u27s
No full textAlzheimer\u27s disease (AD) is a challenging disease as a whole: not only are there challenges in terms of treatment, but also understanding how the disease progresses is difficult in it by itself. Current on-market drugs can only provide symptomatic relief, and do not tackle disease progression. Luckily, stem cell therapy has emerged as a new way of tackling the disease, possessing the potential to address the pathology and improve the neurodegenerative decline. Still, stem cells have challenges imposing on the progression of their research. These challenges range from diagnostics hindrances to ethical concerns, and as a result often lead to limited sample sizes in clinical trials. While slim in numbers, human trials reveal promising results and safety profiles for stem cell treatments such as AstroStem and Neurostem; still, phase II trials are lacking, and as such their efficacy compared to current drugs are yet to be evaluated. Recent research have also delved mice trials with promising results, particularly with hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and embryonic stem cells (ESCs) showing reductions in beta-amyloid plaques and improving cognition. Still, if these findings in mice are to be reflected in human trials, the challenges of stem cell therapies such as tweaking transplantation methods and conducting larger-scale clinical trials need to be addressed
