    Effect of Number of Players and Maturity on Ball-Drills Training Load in Youth Basketball

    This study aimed to assess the basketball ball-drills workload analyzing: (1) the effect of varying the number of players involved on physiological and technical demands; (2) the temporal changes in players’ responses across bouts; and (3) the relationship of players’ workload with their maturation status and training age. Twelve young male basketball players (mean ± SD; age 13.9 ± 0.7 years; height 1.76 ± 0.06 m; body mass 65.7 ± 12.5 kg; HRmax 202 ± 8 beat·min−1) completed three bouts of 4 min interspersed by 2 min of passive recovery of two vs. two and four vs. four ball-drills. The mean percentage of HRmax (%HRmax) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were collected. Technical actions (TAs) (dribbles, passes, shots, interceptions, steals, rebounds, and turnovers) were calculated through notational analysis. Players’ genitalia development (GD) and pubic hair (PH) growth were assessed using Tanner scale. Results showed a higher %HRmax (p = 0.018), RPE (p = 0.042), dribbles (p = 0.007), shots (p = 0.003), and rebounds (p = 0.006) in two vs. two compared to four vs. four condition. Furthermore, a statistical difference was found for %HRmax (p = 0.005) and number of passes (p = 0.020) between bouts. In addition, no correlation between GD, PH, and training age with %HRmax, RPE, and TAs was found. These findings suggest that variations of the number of players involved affect ball-drills workload and that ball-drills training intensity varies across bouts. Finally, ball-drills elicit an adequate training stimulus, regardless of players’ maturation status and training age

    Quantum fidelity approach to the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model in a transverse field

    In this work we analyze the ground-state properties of the s = 1/2 one-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model in a transverse field using the quantum fidelity approach. We numerically determined the fidelity susceptibility as a function of the transverse field Bx and the strength of the next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2, for systems of up to 24 spins. We also examine the ground-state vector with respect to the spatial ordering of the spins. The ground-state phase diagram shows ferromagnetic, floating, and (2,2) phases, and we predict an infinite number of modulated phases in the thermodynamic limit (L→∞). Paramagnetism only occurs for larger magnetic fields. The transition lines separating the modulated phases seem to be of second order, whereas the line between the floating and the (2,2) phases is possibly of first order

    Crude Oil Price Volatility Spillovers and Agricultural Commodities: A Study in Time and Frequency Domains

    This paper investigates the daily volatility spillovers between crude oil prices and a select group of agricultural staples. Empirical findings confirm that the price series under study exhibit nonlinear dependencies which are inconsistent with chaotic pattern. The Johansen-Juselius cointegration test rules out long-run equilibrium relationships between the crude oil prices and the commodities under study. The dynamic conditional correlations (DCC) suggest that the association between agricultural commodities and the crude oil varies over time. The spectral and cross spectral analyses confirm that volatilities in crude oil prices are associated with volatilities in the agricultural products in the sample. Bivariate EGARCH model and the Granger causality tests confirm this relationship

    Experimental Validation of Natural Convection in a Rectangle Using Schlieren Imaging

    The onset of turbulence in natural convection systems is difficult to predict using traditional computational techniques. The flow patterns that occur before and after the onset of turbulence may be better understood with the help of visual techniques like Schlieren imaging. Schlieren imaging allows visualization of the density gradients of a fluid using collimated light and refractive properties. In this experiment, a device was designed to test the behavior of airflow with non-isothermal boundary conditions within a rectangular cavity. Previous computational fluid modeling suggested a period doubling route to chaos in a cavity with a high aspect ratio and free convection flow driven by two non-isothermal walls. To visualize this system, two strip heaters were attached to two 56 cm long plates. The plates were set to an aspect ratio of 10 and sealed with gaskets and garolite. With a Z-type Schlieren device, the existence of two definitive cells was confirmed, and the oscillation point between the two cells was found above the cavity midpoint. At steady state, a thin-wire thermocouple was placed at the inflection point to measure fluctuations in temperature. Consistent oscillations in temperature were observed that indicated a steady interacting boundary layer, while non-periodic oscillations indicated the initial transition to turbulence. It was observed that there was a transition from a mostly steady interacting boundary layer at set-point 35 deg.C to near-turbulence at 65 deg.C. At higher Rayleigh numbers the transition behavior predicted in the computational fluid model was confirmed, although the size of the convection cells was not uniform

    Factors Influencing Leadership Efficacy for Traditional-Aged Sophomore Male College Students

    College student retention remains a prevalent topic in higher education as demographics change and the need to manage enrollment increases. Evidence suggests that women are outperforming men in college environments, and there are enrollment pipeline leaks in the sophomore year when many sophomores experience a slump in satisfaction and performance. This study examined experiential and environmental factors that predict leadership efficacy in traditional-aged sophomore male college students using data from the 2015 Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership. Descriptive statistics revealed percentages of sophomore male participation in a number of MSL-identified campus experiences, clubs and organizations, and leadership development activities. Sophomore males tended to be more involved in sports-related and outdoor adventure activities, but less engaged with community service related activities than sophomore females. Leadership efficacy scores were compared between those sophomore males who were involved in particular activities and those who were not. Sophomore males who performed community service, addressed concerns within the community, or worked with others to make the community a better place showed greater differences in leadership efficacy, with large Cohen’s d effect sizes ranging from .89 to .91. There were also similar large effect sizes ranging between .85 to 1.01 for those sophomore males who engaged in a variety of leadership development activities and those who did not. Leadership efficacy mean scores were also calculated for class and gender subgroups for comparison, and a two-way ANOVA was used to determine if there were any differences. While statistically significant differences were found between the groups, the effect sizes were small, and there did not appear to be evidence supporting the sophomore slump within the sophomore male sample. Finally, leadership efficacy correlated moderately (r=.57) with consciousness of self, providing some evidence for how provoking a sense of altruism can be a productive pathway for bolstering confidence in leadership. This study adds to the literature on gender differences in higher education and the sophomore slump. The research provides clues to ways in which student affairs educators can design experiences and environments that can enhance leadership efficacy for sophomore males. This study also highlights the importance of institutional commitment to supporting leadership development activities as a tool for retention
