Politics, Progress, and Prejudice: Examining the Role of the Political Coalition between Progressive Populists and Organized Labor in the Arizona Statehood Project, 1877 - 1912
Elementary School Students’ Identity Negotiations in their Literacy Classrooms
Existing research reveals too little about how elementary-level students make sense of their teachers\u27 and others\u27 interpersonal communication with them, particularly regarding how it impacts students\u27 identity development and engagement in teaching-learning relationships and instruction. Addressing this timely exigency, this study applied a cross-disciplinary conceptual framework to examine identity aspects of elementary school students· interpersonal and relational communication experiences in and around their literacy learning classrooms. Guided by Hecht et al. \u27s (2005) communication theory of identity (CTI) and examining themes that emerged among 103 faceto-face interviews with second- through fifth-graders, this paper reports key findings related to four interpenetrating identity layers, as well as identity gaps these young students reported experiencing among those layers. Interpersonal findings are explained and instructional principles discerned in light of CTI and research in second-language learning and multi-cultural pedagogy
Assessment of end-of-life design in solid-state lighting
Consumers in the US market and across the globe are beginning to widely adopt light emitting diode (LED) lighting products while the technology continues to undergo significant changes. While LED products are evolving to consume less energy, they are also more complex than traditional lighting products with a higher number of parts and a larger number of electronic components. Enthusiasm around the efficiency and long expected life span of LED lighting products is valid, but research to optimize product characteristics and design is needed. This study seeks to address that gap by characterizing LED lighting products’ suitability for end of life (EOL) recycling and disposal. The authors disassembled and assessed 17 different lighting products to understand how designs differ between brands and manufacture year. Products were evaluated based on six parameters to quantify the design. The analysis indicates that while the efficiency of LED products has improved dramatically in the recent past, product designers and manufacturers could incorporate design strategies to improve environmental performance of lighting products at end-of-life
Implementation Projects in a Computing Theory Course
Most computer science programs expose students to theoretical aspects of computing, such as discrete mathematics, algorithms, and theory of computation. This paper presents the integration of an implementation project in a theory of computation course, so that students get a chance to grapple with the details of a transformation and/or abstract model in addition to preparing a project and demonstration to help fellow students review topics from the course. Examples of student projects include a deterministic finite automata simulator, determining if the languages of two DFAs are equal, converting a grammar to a pushdown automaton, and creating a regular expression engine. Seventeen of 25 respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the project was a valuable learning experience; six were neutral and one strongly disagreed. Student project topics were reviewed against final exam questions for corresponding language classes. While there was no statistically significant difference between groups on exam questions, the overall averages on exam questions demonstrate student mastery of the material
The Use of Faculty-Student Teams to Strengthen the Ethics Content in a DNP Program
Nurse practitioners are confronted with ethical dilemmas. Being able to identify these situations is essential to effective resolutions. Ethics content was introduced by a faculty-student team with subsequent survey regarding the usefulness of ethical frameworks in resolving dilemmas. One year later students were asked by another faculty-student team to define and identify ethically challenging situations they encountered. Those in clinical were better able to identify ethically challenging situations. Didactic portion only students do not seem to have the necessary skills to identify ethical dilemmas. Identifying the appropriate place to introduce and discuss ethical dilemmas is paramount for developing effective DNP curriculums
The Promise and Pitfalls of Neuroeducation as a Grounding for Instructional Practices: An Exploration of K-12 Application and Assessment
The purpose of this narrative inquiry study was to explore how educators from a language-based neuroeducation program apply and assess neuroeducation-grounded approaches in the classroom, and to investigate their perceptions of the challenges and merits of neuroeducation implementation. In order to understand the promise and pitfalls of neuroeducation as a grounding for instructional practices, this study sought to share the stories of educators on the frontlines of this nascent endeavor. It synthesized research from the domains of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and language theory, and applied Neuro-Semantic Language Learning Theory (NLLT) as its underpinning. The research involved five educators, all of whom have taken neuroeducation coursework, begun embedding neuroeducation into their teaching practice to varying degrees, and teach in different capacities. Findings reveal that most participants rely on visual methods and gird their instructional practices with Neuro-Semantic Language Learning Theory, because they believe language mediates learning and cognition. Findings also indicate that the majority of participants utilize informal assessments to gauge the effectiveness of their neuroeducation-grounded approaches. The study finds that teachers’ self-efficacy, feelings of isolation coupled with a lack of greater buy-in, and mindset mismatch are barriers to neuroeducation implementation. As for the merits, the findings highlight the ability to meet students’ needs, the established results witnessed by participants, and the opportunity to effect a paradigm shift. This study further bridges the gap between theory and practice, and adds to the existing body of research on a neuroeducation model predicated on language function
