    Anyone who has worked in the field of history knows that outside the classroom, it is much more vibrant than students are led to believe. This leaves the history instructor with a question, how does an educators show students the dynamic side of the field? One of the ways is to transform the curriculum into something more learner centered using a model similar to Bernard College’s “Reacting to the Past” series of texts. This approach fosters critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the subject matter as students make decisions and find themselves engaged with one another as they roleplay their collective narratives. This approach involves the use of role-playing games and simulations to engage students in active learning within the context of historical events or debates. With these texts, students assume the roles of historical figures, meticulously researching and adopting their characters\u27 perspectives, beliefs, and values. During the game, players will take on an assigned role of specific historical participant who was present at the 1825 Treaty of Prairie du Chien, and given their background and information do their best to negotiate a treaty

In the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), behavioral analysis requires the continuous observation and scoring of behavior using an ethogram. Ethograms for the common marmoset contain actions and behaviors used to objectively judge the individual\u27s action in a systematic way. Cameras are a useful method for the collection and then post recording analyses of data. In the desire for collection of common marmoset behavioral data at the Callitrichid Research Center (CRC) located at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, many factors were taken into consideration to determine the most effective and practical camera. Cameras were chosen based on battery life, storage requirements, resolution and quality of video, file export type, overall simplicity and space requirements permitted by the housing of the marmosets in the CRC. The camera chosen to use for the upcoming research study is the Insta360 (ONE RS 1-inch 360 edition). The Insta360 camera is designed for up to 2 hours of recording at 6K resolution in a 360 degree field of view along with manipulation of video sharpness, clarity, types of camera views pre and post recording as well as a strong, reliable camera durability. Initiation of the next aim in an ongoing experiment is set to start in the next month in which several of the Insta360 cameras will be used to record common marmoset behavior in experimental and control groups alike. This data will then be analyzed using a developed ethogram for recognition of behavioral changes due to antibiotic administration and social isolation. Future uses and significance of this data include the possibility to develop a new ethogram for the common marmoset and the reanalysis of video data for new studies

    Differential interactions within the gut microbiome of marmosets treated with antibiotics as revealed by computational network analysis

    Antibiotics are an important tool in modern medicine that can be used to control the otherwise unmitigated growth of pathogenic bacteria, but their administration can have unintended consequences within the gut microbiome by pushing resident gut bacteria into an unhealthy state known as dysbiosis. While gut dysbiosis following antibiotic treatment is a well-documented phenomenon, the specifics of how the gut microbiota are affected – and how the microbiota affect their host in turn – is poorly understood. In this study we sought to answer these questions by using 16S sequencing to measure how bacterial abundance changes in marmoset monkeys treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic cocktail for 28 days, followed by a 14-day recovery period. Results from k­-means clustering performed on 16S data revealed the existence of 2 distinct subgroups within the antibiotic-treated marmosets: an antibiotic medium-resistance group that was less affected by antibiotics overall, and a low-resistance group that was more affected. Network analysis comparing the subgroups to each other and to vehicle-treated controls further revealed that the bacterial genus Acinetobacter had a high number of interactions (degree centrality) with other genera in antibiotic-treated marmosets, while the genus Roseburia had high degree centrality in control marmosets, suggesting that these genera play an influential role within the microbiomes of their respective treatment groups. Moreover, the genus Faecalibacterium had high degree centrality in the antibiotic medium-resistance subgroup, suggesting that this genus contributed to microbiome stability under antibiotic stress. Differentially abundant metabolites were detected in both subgroups, indicating a corresponding change in the fecal metabolome

    Restorative Circles Training Through Video Modules: A Case Design with a Teacher from the Midwest

    Schools have been employing zero-tolerance policies for decades without knowing the true consequences these disciplinary procedures have on students, especially culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students. Restorative Practices are a useful tool that can be implemented as an alternative disciplinary method. The current study focuses on restorative circles, which has shown evidence for improving school climate and teacher-student relationships, as well as reducing inappropriate disciplinary practices. Restorative circles mend relationships and bring the school community closer together. The purpose of the current study was to provide restorative circles training via online video modules to one elementary school teacher in the Midwest. Percentage of questions answered correctly on the pre- and post-survey was used to determine growth in participant’s knowledge of restorative circles. Pre- and post- classroom disruptive behavior ratings were compared to determine if there was a reduction in disruptive behavior. The results of the study found teacher knowledge of restorative circles did increase from pre- to post- test. Additionally, disruptive classroom behavior increased from the pre- to post- data collection. Limitations and considerations for futures studies are discussed

    Mental Representations of Surface- and Deep-Level Diversity

    Conservatives exhibit backlash to surface-level diversity initiatives (e.g., race-based initiatives), but view deep-level diversity (e.g., ideological diversity) positively. I examined whether conservative preferences for deep- (vs. surface-level) diversity reflects preferences for different forms of diversity, or preferences for forms of diversity that may advantage White people. In one pre-registered two wave study (Total N = 600) I examined liberals’ and conservatives’ perceptions and mental representations of surface- (vs. deep-level) diversity using a reverse correlation task. Images were then rated with respect to perceived race and stereotype-relevant attributes. As expected, participants perceived organizations that emphasized surface- vs. deep-level diversity to be similarly diverse. Both diversity conditions cued mental representations of people who appeared more Black than White; however, that was more true of surface- (vs. deep-level) diversity and unexpectedly was more pronounced among images generated by liberals (vs. conservatives). Hypotheses regarding stereotypic attributes were not supported. My study suggests that people associate diversity—even forms of diversity that ostensibly have little to do with race—with Blackness. As such, highlighting deep-level diversity may not make diversity efforts more palatable to groups who traditionally oppose racial equality

    Assessing Feeling States and Enjoyment of Various Exercise Activities

    To maintain physical health, the American College of Sports Medicine (2022) recommends general exercise guidelines for healthy adults. A lack of adherence to these recommendations may be attributable in part to feeling states and enjoyment while exercising. The study utilized surveys to evaluate feeling states and enjoyment of various exercise activities to determine which type of group exercise most successfully induces changes in feeling states and if a positive correlation exists between feeling state changes and enjoyment. Students enrolled in the Fitness for Living course at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) were surveyed before and after eleven distinct 50-minute bouts of exercise using the Exercise-Induced Feeling Inventory and the Single-Item Measure of Enjoyment During Exercise scale. Through statistical analysis of the survey responses, it was determined that activities such as cardiorespiratory kickboxing and step aerobics are most successful in inducing feeling state changes. Following analysis of the collected data, it was determined that no correlation existed between feeling state changes and enjoyment following exercise. The lack of correlation between feeling state changes and enjoyment suggested that an individual does not have to experience both increased feeling states and enjoyment to adhere to an exercise program
