Get PDFThis capstone report examines the theory and implementation behind applying game design principles to educational applications, and explores their implementation in an educational game through the Pronunciation Pal application. The gamification of learning tools aims to increase learners\u27 engagement and attentiveness with a subject by restructuring content using game design principles of challenges, rewards and feedback. Feedback can be delivered via visuals and/or sounds, as well as regular indicators of player progress and accomplishment. In addition, a successful game implementation establishes challenges to facilitate a player\u27s intrinsic desire to continue playing and improving at the skills presented by the game. This motivation is often assisted by the delivery of meaningful and immediate or near-immediate rewards directly tied to player accomplishment. Pronunciation Pal\u27s game implementation restructures the delivery of the application\u27s standard speech therapy tools, in which a user\u27s performance in the game is based upon their success in pronouncing a given word
Use of Non-Linguistic Representation in a 1st Grade Classroom
Get PDFReading skills are difficult to comprehend for student who are English Language Learners, especially in first grade! Like many other majors, education majors have an internship called clinical practice or student teaching. This is the most influential time to put our learned skills to the test in the most genuine environment possible: a classroom for entire semester. For my clinical practice, I was placed in a on the English side of a dual-language 1st grade classroom at an elementary school in the OPS School District. I discovered an area where there was struggle for many students. Therefore, I created some intervention and supplemental materials to enhance the reading skills. The skills for this unit that students are focusing on are Perspectives/Point-of-View, Text-to-Self/Text-to-Text Connections, and Opinion and Reasoning. For many of these students, showing their learning is difficult when it comes to writing as they are majority English Language Learners or English as a Second Language students. Because of this, I implemented multiple forms of non-linguistic representations, mostly graphic organizers, for students to use to display their learning throughout the entire unit
