Extremist Threats to Food and Agriculture Critical Infrastructure
Get PDFIn this report, NCITE researchers explore the current threat domestic extremists pose to the Food and Agriculture (FA) critical infrastructure sector. We pay specific attention to three threat actors, including 1) animal rights and environmentally motivated extremists, 2) racially/ethnically motivated violent extremists, and 3) anti-institutionalist extremists. Additionally, we elaborate on several security considerations that are unique to the FA sector and the role that precision agriculture technologies play in this ever-evolving threat landscape. We conclude by recommending strategies that national security leaders should consider to strengthen and fortify the FA sector
OPTIMIZATION OF NATURAL KILLER CELL SIMULTANEOUS ADCC AND DIRECT KILLING ASSAY TO INCREASE DATA OUTPUT FOR EACH HUMAN DONOR
No full textTraditionally, when looking at natural killer (NK) cell killing efficacy, direct killing or antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) have been studied independently of one another. Our lab is focused on examining the impacts of immunotherapies on human NK cell functions. We quickly realized that we needed a way to control for human-to-human differences within our experiments. Thus, we developed an assay to look at both types of killing within the same human sample and called it the NK cell – simultaneous ADCC and direct killing assay (NK-SADKA; “1.0 version”). In our new study our goal is to optimize the NK-SADKA (“2.0 version”) by minimizing the number of tubes required to perform the immunotherapy assessment. Success in this effort will allow us to investigate more conditions with the limited quantity of human NK cells that can be obtained from a single blood product. We stained each cell line with a unique dye, so they can be differentiated in the flow cytometer such that both forms of killing efficacy can be determined in a single tube. When performing a comparison between NK-SADKA 1.0 and 2.0 to assess any changes in killing efficacy, we saw a significant increase in direct killing and no change in ADCC
Dental Access and Public Health Policy Gaps
Get PDFOral health is a key component of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked in public health policy and planning. While regular dental care can prevent long-term complications, many individuals delay or forget treatment due to barriers such as cost, lack of insurance, scheduling difficulties, and limited awareness of available resources. I did this study as I came across health disparities in underserved communities and wanted to see if the results would be similar in a university population that is insured and has access to more resources. To investigate challenges that individuals within a university community face in accessing dental care, I examined some of the most commonly perceived barriers in communities through a 15-question survey. This research is seeking to identify gaps in knowledge, services, and outreach that may be contributing to unmet oral health needs. The findings from this study seek to identify areas where dental access may be falling short. The findings may be useful in future advocacy or education efforts and can contribute to ongoing conversations around access, equity, and preventive care. As someone who wants to be a dentist, I plan to carry this data forward and use it to inform how I serve communities and promote oral health awareness
A Comparative Analysis of the Intersection Between Sex Trafficking and Domestic Violence: A Cross-Cultural Study of the United States and India
Get PDFDomestic violence survivors are affected by long-term trauma from abuse, which can lead to them being more vulnerable and susceptible to sex trafficking tactics. Sex trafficking survivors are also at risk of becoming involved in an abusive relationship because they may have been previously exposed or due to a normalization of abuse. Both domestic violence and sex trafficking are prevalent issues within the world that continue to be ongoing due to their hidden nature. This study highlights the connections between domestic violence and sex trafficking and how each can be portrayed differently based on the environment and cultural norms within developed and developing countries. India is a developing country with a patriarchal viewpoint with gender inequality, while the United States is a patriarchy with gender equality. This study uses a qualitative method of data collection by conducting a content analysis of previous research to highlight the differences in cultural norms and how they affect the portrayal and opinion of domestic violence and sex trafficking in each respective country. Possible limitations to this study would be the availability of data from a developing country such as India, variations in definitions between the two countries, and differences in legal frameworks
Building Early Phonemic Awareness
Get PDFAlphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness skills are strong predictors of later reading ability (Stanley and Finch, 2018). Therefore, phonemic awareness and letter-sound relationships are skills that Kindergarteners have a limited amount of time to master. As a result, educators must think critically about the strategies and forms of assessment implemented to ensure they are setting young readers up for lifelong success in reading. The purpose of my study was to determine if explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence would increase student ability to isolate, segment, blend, and decode grade-level text. Strategies included kinesthetic movements of the hands and arms, Elkonin boxes (Ehri, 2022), decoding flashcards, and decodable readers. Additionally, this action research study provides implications for one particular Kindergarten classroom which received the explicit instruction described above. The data for this action research study was collected in a triangulation through daily anecdotal observations, weekly quick screeners, and a pre (form A) and post (form B) test. A paired-samples t-test was conducted to determine the effect of explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence on student ability to isolate, segment, blend, and decode grade-level text. There was a statistically significant difference in the scores prior to implementing the strategies and after implementing the summarizing strategies. These results suggest that explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence had a positive effect on students\u27 ability to isolate, segment, blend, and decode grade-level text
