    My writing for this project was mainly fueled by an internet phenomenon back in 2020-21 where people would use tone indicators in messages to let others know if they were being genuine, joking, sarcastic, etc. My process of writing consisted listening to music, classical so lyrics wouldn\u27t be distracting, as a way to stay focused and to also help fuel some passion within my writing. When a song would roll into a heavy crescendo, I would write in a more firm tone, and when the song would relax, I would take a more smooth approach

    The Facile Synthesis of a Far-Red ER-Targeting BODIPY Dye Capable of Light Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Generation

    Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an exciting and emerging field of cancer treatment that acts in a much more selective manner via targeted cellular localization and localized irradiation to activate a photosensitizing drug in order to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) that ultimately lead to cell death. Evidence has suggested that the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), one of the largest and most important cellular organelles, could be an important target in PDT. Interested in that idea, and to the ends of creating new photosensitizers (PS) that might accomplish this goal, a new far-red light activated iodo-substituted boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) fluorescent dye capable of subcellular localization within the ER, producing high quantum yields of ROS is herein reported. As such, the following research has found that the generation of reactive oxygen species within the ER, caused by this BODIPY (BDP-1I) evokes oxidative stress, which in turn causes immunogenic cell death. The synthesis, characterization, spectroscopic properties, and cellular studies are thoroughly presented. The ability of this BODIPY dye, and its congener (BDP-1), to act as a PDT agent in breast cancer cells suggests promising organelle-targeted therapeutics that could help push the field of PDT to new heights

    A Phenomenological Study Into Perceptions of Female Undergraduate Students in Engineering on Student Loan Debt at the University of Riverbend

    Amid the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, undergraduate students in the United States faced heightened financial strains and increased loan burdens, despite the introduction of President Biden’s ambitious student loan forgiveness initiative, which was later rejected by the Supreme Court. This dissertation delved into the nuanced perceptions of female engineering undergraduates regarding the impact of their student loan debt on both their academic pursuits and future career prospects. Employing a phenomenological approach, this study aimed to capture the perspectives female undergraduate engineering students at a private, four-year, predominantly white institution hold concerning financial aid. This study was guided by a conceptual framework rooted in the pipeline and social cognitive career theories as they provided the basis for constructing interview protocols. These protocols covered various aspects of the interviewed students’ lives, which directly or indirectly influenced their perspectives on financial aid. The data collection involved in-depth interviews with twelve participants enrolled in engineering programs at the University of Riverbend, a private institution in the Midwestern United States. Each participant completed a 60-minute semi-structured interview, complemented by at least two follow-up emails to foster thorough descriptions and profound discussions surrounding their experiences. This research focused on describing the experiences, feelings, attitudes, and perceptions of female engineering students about financial aid, particularly student loan debt. The findings were derived from the analysis of rich qualitative data. Four themes emerged from the data collection: persistent need for financial aid to access higher education, student loans as a source of stress, negative impact of student loan debt on further plans, and limited loan knowledge but optimistic about repayment. Future college students could gain valuable insights into financial aid so as to better plan their undergraduate study. The universities and educators could better understand the unique difficulties faced by female engineering students with student loan debt and provide targeted assistance to help them successfully achieve their undergraduate learning goals

    Identifying the Molecular and Behavioral Basis of Cerebellar Dysfunction in TcMAC-21 and Dp16 Mouse Models of Down Syndrome

    Down Syndrome (DS), a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder, is caused by the triplication of chromosome 21 (Trisomy 21). This genetic anomaly leads to distinct cognitive and motor impairments, often linked to cerebellar dysfunction. Prior studies have reported cerebellar hypoplasia and a reduction in both Purkinje cells (PCs) and granule cells (GCs) in humans and mouse models of DS. Given the cerebellum’s crucial role in motor coordination, its abnormal development likely contributes to the motor deficits observed in individuals with DS. However, the extent to which altered synaptic input to PCs impacts motor deficits remains unclear. This study aims to investigate cerebellar cytoarchitecture using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and locomotor function using the ErasmusLadder in both TcMAC-21 and Dp16 mouse models of DS, compared to euploid controls. TcMAC-21 mice carry a cloned human chromosome 21, while Dp16 mice possess a duplication of the orthologous region on mouse chromosome 16. This study provides insight into genetic differences in DS models and their impact on phenotypes. Future research will further link cerebellar alterations to motor development, paving the way for potential therapies
