Defining a Prepared Citizen to Align High School Visions with Community Expectations: A Qualitative Study
No full textThis study explores the concept of a “prepared” citizen in the context of high school education, focusing on how Mountain View Public Schools (MVPS) can assess and align their curriculum with community expectations of graduates. The research aims to define what it means to be a “prepared” citizen, drawing on qualitative data from interviews. Stakeholders from various community sectors, including school leadership, local businesses, post-secondary schools, and law enforcement will contribute to this definition. The study seeks to bridge the gap between academic success (e.g., graduation rates) and broader community goals by identifying behavioral indicators of prepared citizens and methods for measuring them. The findings will help MVPS evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of their vision statements
Striving for Justice: Assessing Disparities in Juvenile Justice Involvement for Black Youth
No full textThe purpose of this study was to examine the contributing factors to the Disproportionate Minority Contact of Black youth with the Atlas County juvenile justice system. The methodology utilized a qualitative approach through a phenomenology focus to gain a greater understanding of the social realities of stakeholders engaged with court-involved youth in Atlas County. The findings confirm a lack of alternative options to adjudication and differential treatment contribute to the disparities for Black youth in Atlas County. Implications include efforts to reduce DMC must be grounded in policy and strategic planning, cultural awareness and training. Future research should involve court-engaged youth and court officials to gain an expanded perspective on contributing factors and solutions to racial and ethnic disparities
Faculty Perceptions of Charism Transmission in the Core Curriculum: A Mixed-Methods Study
No full textInstitutions of higher education with a religious heritage have something distinctive to offer to their students–a congregational charism. While this charism is intended to be integrated within the content and affective outcomes of all disciplines of study, faculty often struggle to understand and articulate this charism. This mixed-methods study focuses on the lived experience of faculty teaching core curriculum courses and ways to assist them in charism understanding and transmission to students. Faculty express openness to transmitting the charism but do not have the tools or support to fulfill that mandate. Faculty discussions, assistance in choosing course texts, and the availability of mentors trained in the charism can support faculty pedagogy and impact student learning as a result

No full textIn my english honors course, we are placed into different fairy tale groups. My group was assigned Beauty and the Beast as the fairy tale we would be offering social commentary on for this essay assignment. I knew I wanted to primarily discuss gender and women\u27s roles in my essay since Beauty and the Beast offers a lot of interesting avenues on what a woman\u27s role is, particularly in the romantic and familial spheres. I chose two different film retellings of Beauty and the Beast for this paper. The first being La Belle et La Bete, a 1946 black and white film made in France and the second being Disney\u27s classic 1991 retelling of the famous tale. I wanted to see how the execution of gender roles in both movies gave unique insights into the cultural and historical contexts of the time period. I used quotes from our course readings and also online articles and journals to support my evidence. Overall, while this process took me a while, I think it was rewarding as it allowed me to see that movies are not created in a vacuum and that the current events of our time are exemplified in media we consume
