    Socioeconomic Status of Parents and Provision of Education in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Cameroon: The Case of the Southwest Region

    This study examines the effect of the socioeconomic status of parents on the provision of education during the COVID-19 lockdown in Cameroon. Three major objectives guided this study, which examines the effects of parents’ educational level and level of income on the provision of education and how the emergency response strategy adopted by the government affected the provision of quality education for all. A case study research design was used, and the Southwest Region was chosen as the study site. Forty parents from rural and urban areas within the region were selected while twelve divisional delegates were sampled for the study. An analysis of the data revealed that parents’ level of income and educational attainment impacted the quality of education received by children during the COVID-19 lockdown

    Original Sin or the Lack Thereof Rousseau’s Philosophical Anthropology

    Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophical anthropology finds its roots in deeply theological territory. At the heart of his philosophy is the belief that man is essentially good but becomes corrupted by the influences of society. His strong belief in the innate goodness of humanity therefore led him to question Christian doctrines that appear to contradict that natural goodness. This then led him to object to the doctrine of original sin. Rousseau’s interpretation of original sin, and his subsequent rejection of it, shaped his broader political and philosophical thought, and is thus a vital piece of understanding Rousseau’s broader normative theory. Because he grounded his anthropology in the explicit rejection of Christian doctrine, understanding the theological implications of Rousseau’s anthropology requires that we understand both the teachings that Rousseau rejected, and his grounds for that rejection. This project contrasts Rousseau’s understanding of original sin and theory of human nature with Catholic formulations of the doctrine of original sin at that time. To do so, we particularly focus on what Rousseau says about sin, what Rousseau says the Catholic Church says about sin, and what the Catholic Church actually says about sin. We examine a variety of primary and secondary literature on historical Catholic teaching on original sin, focusing on the documents of the Council of Trent. In doing so, we shed light on the origins of his thought and the implications of a theological reading of Rousseau. This gives us a richer understanding of Rousseau as a thinker in his own right, of the interplay between theology and political theory, and, most importantly, of the many ways in which we approach the topic of human nature

    Efficient Light-Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Production from a Cationic Mitochondrial-Targeting BODIPY Dye

    BODIPY dyes have demonstrated their effectiveness as photosensitizers due to their diverse reactivity and high selectivity. These dyes are highly versatile and can be modified to absorb light across the visible and infrared spectrum. This study introduces a red light-activated BODIPY dye capable of subcellular localization within the mitochondria, yielding high quantum yields of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The potential of this dye to serve as a photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent highlights its promise as an organelle- targeted phototherapeutic. The synthetic route for this dye, along with its characterization and evaluation through 1H NMR, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy, is detailed. The dye\u27s ability to generate singlet oxygen and superoxide radicals, as well as its capacity to photo-nick plasmid DNA, will also be addressed. Integrating this organelle-targeted strategy into cancer treatment therapies could help mitigate drug resistance and reduce the recurrence of tumor cells

    Enhancing Quadrotor Autonomy Using Robust Control Algorithms

    In the evolving landscape of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the autonomy and stability of quadrotors are crucial, especially in critical applications such as search and rescue missions and surveillance. This research focuses on the development and implementation of planning and control algorithms within the Robot Operating System (ROS2) framework. Initial work focused on developing Proportional-Integral- Derivative (PID) control algorithm in a realistic simulated environmental condition, incorporating the effects of sensor noise. Following successful simulations, the study transitioned to real-world testing, validating the effectiveness of the proposed solutions in ROS2. The work conducted has not only demonstrated the practical utility of these algorithms in both simulated and real-world environments but has also laid the groundwork for more advanced applications in aerial robotics. The successful integration of ROS2 has opened up new avenues for modularity and scalability, critical for the ongoing evolution of autonomous drone technology

    The Effect of Recumbent Stepping on Leg Muscle Activity in Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis

    Purpose/Hypothesis: Recumbent steppers are commonly used for improving cardiovascular and muscular endurance in neurological populations. Prior research has shown that using specific verbal cues and a foot strap can significantly alter lower extremity muscle activity and recruitment in healthy individuals during recumbent stepping. The purpose of this case series was to measure lower extremity muscle activity during recumbent stepping under a variety of stepping conditions in persons with multiple sclerosis. Number of Subjects: 3 adults (2 F, 1 M; age 40 -54) with multiple sclerosis (MS) with varying levels of lower extremity motor function and disability. Materials and Methods: During a single session, electromyography (EMG) was used to measure muscle activity of the tibialis anterior (TA), medial gastrocnemius (MG), rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris muscles (BF), and vastus lateralis (VL) for 30 seconds at a constant resistance and step rate during six different stepping conditions: 1) Stepping with no foot strap (StepNFS), 2) Stepping with a foot strap (StepFS), 3) Verbal cues to pull with toes using a foot strap (PullTFS), 4) Verbal cues to push with heel using a foot strap (PushHFS), 5) Verbal cues to push with toes using a foot strap (PushTFS), 6) Verbal cues to pull with heels using a foot strap (PullHFS). Results: Subject 1 demonstrated the greatest combined muscle activity during the PullTFS condition and the lowest during the PushHFS. Subject 2 demonstrated the greatest combined muscle activity during the PullHFS condition and the lowest during the PedalNFS. Subject 3 demonstrated the greatest combined muscle activity during the PullHFS condition and the lowest during the PedalNFS. The activity of individual muscles was highly variable between subjects and stepping conditions. Conclusions: Individuals with MS with different levels of disability demonstrate highly variable muscle recruitment under different recumbent stepping conditions. However, use of a foot strap and verbal cues to emphasize pulling while stepping may increase overall muscle activity as well as recruitment of specific muscles such as the anterior tibialis and bicep femoris that are less active when stepping without verbal cues or a foot strap. Clinical Relevance: When prescribing recumbent stepping exercise, clinicians should be aware that using a foot strap and specific verbal cues, can substantially alter lower extremity muscle recruitment in persons with MS. However, responses can be highly variable and may require the use of surface EMG to determine specific muscle responses between individuals.https://ecommons.udayton.edu/dpt_symposium/1052/thumbnail.jp
