    Impacting Global Mindset Using International Case Studies

    An international case study was developed for a Quantitative Analysis course as part of a broader research project investigating the relative strengths of global engagement interventions without extended international travel in helping engineering students develop a global learner mindset. This work aspires to expand research into the development of global competencies in engineering beyond international study-abroad experiences. Our focus is on the development of a holistic global engineering education process that is able to reach all engineering students even when institutions are not able to provide extended opportunities to immerse them in other cultures, either because of global crises (such as a pandemic or violent conflicts), financial limitations, or the need for more sustainable methods of globally connecting. Inspired by the historical seismic activity of the Middle East, the international case study seeks to develop a distribution plan of relief supplies (ex., bottled water) from pre-positioned storage facilities in Turkey that could be used in the event of a natural disaster. The case study involves 4 research assignments that students complete outside of class paired with 4 in-class discussion and work days where students share what they learned and work together to develop a network model. Research assignments introduce students to successful applications of humanitarian logistics, and require students to familiarize themselves with Turkey’s geography and transportation infrastructure as well as the humanitarian relief efforts in response to its most recent earthquake in 2023. Class discussions allow students the opportunity to reflect on their research, make joint decisions about the best locations for storage facilities and work together to find actual data. The PIs conducted the pilot implementation during the spring 2023 semester and collected pre and post assessment data from the Global Engagement Survey (GES) and Global Engineering Competency Scale (GECS) instruments. Improvements to the intervention were made based on those results and the next implementation of the case study intervention occurred during the Spring 2024 semester. Preliminary data from the spring 2023 and 2024 implementations indicate a positive growth in the students\u27 conscious consumption mindset

    Reimagining the Basic Course: Integrating Asian and African Storytelling Traditions in Public Speaking Pedagogy

    Public speaking courses often reflect Eurocentric rhetorical traditions, focusing on argumentation, logic, and individual presentation styles. This essay proposes a redesign of public speaking curriculum by incorporating storytelling traditions from Asian and African cultures. These traditions emphasize communal narratives, moral lessons, and audience engagement through relatable stories, offering a richer, more inclusive approach. The essay contrasts the communal and narrative-focused traditions of Asian and African storytelling with Western argumentation and rhetoric. It advocates for integrating these storytelling techniques into public speaking courses to make them more representative of global perspectives, benefiting both international and domestic students. Such integration would prevent international students from being derooted from their cultural practices and enhance Western approaches with diversity and engagement. The essay concludes by suggesting that this cultural synthesis enriches public speaking, creating a more comprehensive, inclusive, and global pedagogy

    Federated Boolean Matrix Factorization Using Integer Programming

    Identifying the underlying structural patterns in data and extracting meaningful insights is a key challenge in data analysis. One effective approach to this problem is matrix factorization (MF), which approximates large matrices with lower-dimensional representations, making it effective for uncovering hidden patterns. MF techniques are widely applicable across various domains, such as recommender systems, cancer genomics, system identification, clustering, and image processing. Despite their effectiveness, existing MF methods often struggle with computational constraints and convergence challenges when tackling large-scale, nonsmooth, and nonconvex optimization problems, which are common in real-world applications. This project aims to explore both the theoretical understanding and practical application of MF by integrating optimization techniques designed for large-scale problems. Specifically, we focus on Federated Binary Matrix Factorization (FBMF), an extension of traditional MF designed for decentralized settings with binary-valued data. This approach is particularly relevant for privacy-preserving and large-scale distributed applications, such as healthcare and recommender systems. To address the challenges of optimizing MF in these settings, we leverage optimization methods – integer programming (IP). The research combined methodological development with empirical validation. We first introduced an algorithm that integrates alternating optimization, a randomized block-coordinate strategy, and integer programming to enhance solution accuracy for FBMF. We then applied the proposed approach to large-scale cancer genomics and recommendation tasks, comparing its performance against a state of the art FBMF method

    A Mini Review on Rodent Models of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder typically diagnosed at a young age. ASD symptoms include deficits in social behavior, repetitive and restrictive behaviors, anxiety, as well as alterations in sensory gating and sensitivity, learning, memory, and attention performance. Since ASD emerges from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, clinical treatment of these conditions presents with challenges. Being able to model behavioral and neurobiological aspects of this disorder at the preclinical level using rodents allows for further investigation of the pathophysiological basis of this disorder. This mini review will focus on selected genetic and pharmacological rodent models of ASD that have been employed in neuroscience research to understand the neuropathophysiology of this disorder
