    Get PDF
Chumbe Island Coral Park (CHICOP) is a privately-owned business that strives to follow the best principles of ecotourism, conservation, and environmental education. Their environmental education initiative is award-winning and has affected thousands of students and community members in Zanzibar. This study looked at the environmental education techniques that CHICOP already has in place by observing two pre-visits, three island-visits and one-post visit, and determined where there was a need for enhanced and new techniques for teaching about the environment. Evidence of climate change on Chumbe Island was also recorded to aid in the educational tools and to create a database of climate change evidence on Chumbe. After compiling the observations of each of the visits, twenty new environmental educational tools and activities were created, under eleven category types. It is hoped that these tools and activities will enhance environmental education based on Chumbe’s needs

El futuro indefinido del Barrio Puerto de Valparaíso: Explorando el nexo complicado entre la preservación del patrimonio y la gentrificación en el Barrio Puerto de Valparaíso / The indefinite future of the Puerto de Valparaíso neighborhood: Exploring the complicated nexus between heritage preservation and gentrification in the Puerto de Valparaíso neighborhood

In the years following UNESCO’s conferral of the World Heritage title to the historic zone of Valparaíso, the residential neighborhoods of Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción underwent a drastic process of gentrification. Private investors hoping to profit from increased tourism flows pumped capital into the sector in the form of restaurants, cafes, and hotels. As result, residents were gradually expelled due to higher rent prices and an overall increase in cost of living. The consequences of developing the city’s tourism infrastructure in these neighborhoods were not limited to gentrification; as the residential life of these neighborhoods was uprooted, so was their intangible cultural heritage. While the facades of buildings were manicured and architectural features preserved, the unique identity of the cerros departed. In the place of regional character crafted from centuries of immigrants settling in the area, a homogenous consumerism took hold. However, in comparison, the sector of Barrio Puerto, which also belongs to the historic zone, has yet to be deeply affected by Valparaíso’s burgeoning tourism industry. My investigation is an attempt to understand why. The following document contains a journalistic exploration and academic analysis of the themes of gentrification and cultural heritage in context of the historic Barrio Puerto neighborhood of Valparaíso. By synthesizing scholarly sources and conducting interviews with experts and residents of the neighborhood, I have considered how these phenomenons interact in theory, as well as how they are manifested in the neighborhood today. In the appended news feature, realities of gentrification in Barrio Puerto are examined, and possible futures for the neighborhood and its heritage are considered

Losing Faith: An Exploration of Village Ponds in the Thar Desert

The intention of this study is to provide a holistic look at the Naadi: a rain-fed common property resource used for drinking water collection in the Thar Desert, Rajasthan. A sustainer of human life in the Thar, Naadis have decided how and where residents of the Thar lived. This study examines both current and historical naadi use in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan. The format of the study is a compilation and analysis of 15 field visits, a series of interviews, and investigation of recent alternatives to naadis. The success of a naadi is a function of geology, geography, and management. Management depends on a community’s ability to guarantee ownership though participation. Declining management today can largely be attributed to the entrance of new drinking water technologies. An inverse relationship, however, cannot be assured between the rise of new technologies and the necessity of naadis in the future. In their current state, naadis are not being actively degraded; although, they are often neglected and misused. This study will not offer a definitive answer on the future viability of naadis; instead, it is meant only to be explorational

Managing Health in All the Helpers: A Survey of Mental Health Services for Humanitarian Aid Workers

    Get PDF
Humanitarianism has been a long-standing principle of helping those in need. However, the work of providing such assistance is not an easy feat. Humanitarian work is mentally taxing because of the high daily demands of the job as well as the potential for exposure to direct and secondary traumatization. These mental health risks can manifest into the mental health disorders if the stressors of the job are not well managed by individual aid workers and by the humanitarian organizations. The most common mental health disorders experienced by aid workers are depression, anxiety, burnout, and PTSD. Research into mental health and humanitarian aid workers suggests that discrepancies exist in mental health risks and outcomes for national aid and international aid workers due to their diverse backgrounds. However, current organizational practices indicate that they are not meeting the diverse needs of all their staff members. To bridge the gap between this discrepancy in mental health service provision for national and international aid workers, humanitarian organizations must increase their efforts to include national staff within organizational policies and they must conduct more research into the various needs of the national staff that they employ

Evaluating Frameworks for Multilateral Investor-State Dispute Settlement

    Get PDF
Utilizing both empirical studies of investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) regimes and the accounts of both public and private practitioners of these processes, this study aims to inform public policymakers, multinational corporation leadership, and academic researchers on some of the key issues to consider when developing a multilateral friendly ISDS regime. By analyzing the procedural and functional details of both traditional arbitration (via the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law) and investment dispute courts (via those proposed in the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and the EU Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement), this study brings to light some of the most salient critiques of each system relating to accessibility, transparency, and effectiveness. Consideration of legislative texts, policy and economic analyses, and four interviews with practitioners and researchers suggests that although the predominant ISDS arbitration system is deeply flawed, it is the most recognized and accessible format for dispute resolution in a multilateral setting

The Perceived Mental Health Effects of China’s One-Child Policy

    Get PDF
This study looked at the perceived impacts of China’s 30 year One-Child Policy (OCP). Previous studies suggested the OCP affected Chinese culture and society in a number of ways, however no studies (to the knowledge of the principal investigator) had looked at perceptions of the effects of the OCP on anxiety levels and other mental health issues of students in China. This study sought to fill the aforementioned knowledge gap and aimed to determine perceptions about the mental health effects of the OCP on students. Specifically, this study endeavored to gain a better understanding of perceptions of the effects of the OCP on Chinese culture, the aging population, and students’ mental health along with adults who are only children. This mixed-methods study used two forms of data collection; in-person interviews and WeChat surveys. The quantitative results of this study were analyzed using SPSS Statistical Analysis Software and qualitative data was thematically analyzed to compliment the quantitative results. The results of this study indicated that the primary effects of the OCP on Chinese culture were changes in the values placed on different family roles and a decrease in the value placed on and prevalence of traditional Chinese culture. The results also suggested egocentrism, selfishness and independent awareness were perceived to be higher among OC, which could have been the result of changes in the way OC were treated by their parents and therefore how they developed. Results also indicate the perception that spoiling of OC by parents and grandparents resulted in the lowering of OC’s tolerance to adversity and increased frustration when presented with challenges. Another percieved implication of being an OC was less developed social skills, which could be due to the lack of siblings. Based on the results of this study, it can be suggested that there are significant perceived impacts of the OCP on the mental health of OC

### Pregnant women are already, according to the doctor\u27s perspective, patients at risk. / In the world of theater, there have been many theorists and practitioners of art. / This non-traditional ISP project seeks to recreate a three-song mini EP based on the problematic environment of the Chilean educational system and its negative influences on students. The songs aim to ask for social changes and increase awareness by criticizing the problems and at the same time serve as a way to educate young people of the new generation about the realities of the current educational system. Using information from previous school observations, inspirations from the music of different musicians and most importantly the narratives of interviews, these three songs took shape in three main themes: a call for help and change, a personal narration and the power of music. Each of these songs is of a different genre that is popular with young people today: acoustic pop, electronic indie / pop and hip-hop

    Get PDF
The Priority Gender Equality Action Plan 2014-2021 was generated in response to the evaluation and assessment of the Priority Gender Equality Action Plan 2008-2013, which originated as a way to hold UNESCO accountable to its given mandates on gender equality as an agency of the United Nations. This research provided a policy analysis regarding the effectiveness of the Priority Gender Equality Action Plan 2014-2021 as a global initiative to promote gender equality. The analysis was structured into four sections. The first provided contextual background of the policy, its current state, and stakeholder analysis. Second, components of the policy were analyzed including its objectives, implementation, and outcomes. Thirdly, data was analyzed to seek further evidence of the policy’s strength and sustainability. Finally, an analysis of the policy was constructed based on the aforementioned research regarding the effectiveness of the current plan in its objectives and those of UNESCO as a whole. In response to this analysis, recommendations for future improvements were also provided. The outcomes provided a clear representation of the positive evolution of gender equality programming with the conclusion that the policy is effective in promoting UNESCO’s mandate of gender equality and the policy’s specific objectives. Further recommendations for future programming based on the analysis were greater accountability of all stakeholders, a greater focus on program and evaluation structures, and a greater effort to discuss how gender-based violence affects education
