Unity in Diversity: Textile Expressions of the Human Condition in Times of Economic and Cultural Anxiety
Questions about the roots of human nature have been plaguing human societies across the globe since the beginning of time. Whole societies are built around the perceived answers, and the art which these societies produce reflect upon it and even contribute to constructing ‘proper’ human behavior. One such artistic material that lays literally quite close to the human body is the textile. Textiles can possess the specific power to shape the way in which an individual human body is presented to others, as well as to position a collective of humans in relation to others. In other words, textiles can make both implicit statements about the state of an individual human being and about the group to which they belong. Considering that many also play significant parts in arranging human societies according to social statuses, textiles are capable of merging conceptions about human nature into the structure of human society.
In Indonesia, a country of many diverse cultures possessing their own unique traditional textiles, the same concepts apply. However, increased globalization had put pressures upon certain Indonesian groups to find ways to adapt their textile craft in order to survive the changing environmental, economic, political, and cultural climates. The implications of such textiles changing in form or usage lead to similarly dramatic shifts in the cloth’s implied statements about the nature of humanity. However, there is one Indonesian textile in particular that is endowed with a dynamic traditional understanding of human nature that makes it flexible in a way that it can participate in these national and global shifts without losing its original meaning or its purposes: Toba Batak ulos
Informing Joyality 4 Kids: Ecopsychology Education to Support Upper Primary Children’s Well-being Through Environmental and Social Crisis
Responding to climate change and the state of the world demands psychological resilience and a transformative shift towards sustainable behavior. Children inheriting our uncertain future require psychological support and tools of well-being to fuel emotionally sustainable activism. In this paper I investigate how best to support upper primary aged children through environmental and social issues with Joyality 4 Kids, an educational ecopsychology program.
During November of 2019 I completed the Joyality Program processes independently, then conducted two focus group interviews with five individuals experienced in the Joyality Program and/or environmental education to develop the processes for an eight-hour Joyality 4 Kids workshop. I then trialed the two-day workshop with ten children in Brunswick Heads, NSW and assessed it using participant surveys and co-facilitator observations. Additionally, I surveyed 79 parents and teachers online.
I found that children have high levels of anxiety about climate change, are very environmentally active, and respond well when given space to express their negative feelings but require more support noticing positive aspects of their world. Parent/teacher anxieties inhibit them from providing children support out of fear of exasperating their children/student’s emotions. I discovered that parents and teachers desire resources to help them know how to support children. I found that to best meet the needs of children and their caretakers, Joyality 4 Kids should offer dualistic programs that equip both parents/teachers and children with well-being tools of focusing on positives, holding hope, taking meaningful action, sharing deeper feelings, practicing gratitude, and spending time in nature
An Analysis of the Rajasthan Public Health System’s Response to the 2019 Dengue Insurgence
Dengue virus is in a pandemic status and is a major public health issue in the modern world. The mosquito-borne disease is largely prevalent in Asia and specifically India, where more than half of the states are considered to have complete presence of the dengue virus. The intricate infrastructure of the Indian public health system looks for dengue cases at all levels and reports to the integrated disease surveillance programme (IDSP).
Analyses of the IDSP and trends of dengue cases was done in response to dengue outbreaks throughout the state. Geographic information system (GIS) maps were created to evaluate a geographic distribution of dengue cases; however, significant issues arose when collecting data. The first data set, the state level IDSP’s primary data source, was missing a significant number of cases. The other source of data, a line list compiled from Rajasthan’s eight medical college, had significantly many more cases than the prior, but was also incomplete and did not have features that allowed it to be categorized on a week by week setting, like the district reported data.
The analysis showed that men made up 69% of dengue patients in medical colleges. The medical college data also showed the ages most at risk for contracting dengue were between 15 and 29. In both sets of data, Jaipur, Kota and Jodhpur were the three most affected districts. However, there was a strong lack of symmetry between these two data sets after these top three districts. Many of the districts were found to have severely under reported their cases. Three districts in particular reported zero dengue cases when each district had over 100 cases reported by medical colleges. Despite this, the investigation done for this paper found the IDSP to still have had a significant impact on reducing the burdens of dengue due to the strong interventions by rapid response teams
“An abandoned system”: An investigation into the access of comprehensive sexual health services for incarcerated women in Argentina.
In this paper, we explore a few perceptions of access to comprehensive sexual health care services for incarcerated women in Argentina. Women have specific health care needs, and although every woman has the right to adequate and high quality health care, it is not accessible to all. With respect to health in situations of incarceration, Argentina follows the rules of Bangkok as well as federal and provincial legal frameworks, which require adequate medical care for incarcerated women. Past investigations have shown that there is significant deficiency across Argentina’s penitentiary systems in the delivery of women’s healthcare services, especially of specialized services such as PAP (Papanicolaou) and breast cancer screenings. Additionally, past studies have affirmed that the free and safe expression of women’s sexuality is inhibited in prison. Owing to these issues, this paper examines access to and quality of general medical attention, access to sexual health care services, and the ways in which expression of women’s sexuality changes in the context of incarceration. We conducted four interviews with professionals linked with the penitentiary system and four interviews with formerly incarcerated women. After, we analyzed the collected information with eight codes of analysis, keeping the principal objectives of the study in mind.
We found that there are discrepancies between the opinions of the professionals from monitoring organizations and those who work directly in the penitentiary system. Additionally, the perspectives of the professionals and those of the formerly incarcerated women are very different. This shows us that each level of connection with the penitentiary system has its own implications and perspectives of how the system functions in general. Similarly, we found that the experience of each woman in prison was distinct, but at the same time there are many similarities in the problems they encountered in accessing sexual health care services and with expressing their sexuality in a free and safe way. Generally, many participants related that Argentine prisons do not offer appropriate sexual health care services, citing faults of serologies, contraceptive methods, and comprehensive sexual health education. We found that incarceration inhibits an adequate sex life for women, with obstacles to accessing conjugal visits and expressing their sexualidad with sufficient space and privacy. We can conclude that the lack of comprehensive sexual health care services is a persistent issue in many Argentine prisons, which presents a direct violation of human rights
The implementation of market-based neoliberal policies in Argentina, which ended with the devastating economic crisis of 2001, left a significant quantity of youth expelled and excluded from the secondary educational system. In the search for an alternative so that the right to education would become effective, many social organizations opened popular secondary schools in the Capital of Buenos Aires, known as popular high schools. This paper analyzes the conceptualization of the right to education in Argentina and, from the perspectives of teachers and workers of these popular high schools, aims to know the history and characteristics of these experiences to investigate the existing links between these alternative forms of education and the guarantee of the right to education
My independent study considers the current political moment in Latin America and reviews the trajectory of progressive, “Pink Tide” governments almost two decades after their rise to power throughout the region, with a focus on three case studies: Bolivia, Argentina, and Uruguay. The questions driving my research stem from my personal experience, as a student of SIT Bolivia who was forced to leave in the turbulent aftermath of national elections, and have grown into an exploration of the foundations, the achievements and the pitfalls of the plural and diverse Latin American “lefts.” My content is a mix of personal reflection and results drawn from political analysis by various Latin American writers, whose national origins span across the region and whose writing spans from 2005 to 2019. Throughout the project I have learned about the diverse manifestations of progressive governments and I have tried to recognize both their successes and their shortcomings within the context of their own distinct strategies of power. Instead of concrete conclusions, what I have produced here is a cascading multitude of questions
There are two objectives within this study. The first objective is to examine the perception of Peruvians that reside in Tacna in relation to Venezuelan migrants. The second objective is to study the integration of Venezuelan migrants in tacneñan society and culture. Ever since the plummeting of oil prices in Venezuela in 2014, the Venezuelan economy has contracted drastically. Venezuela\u27s economic instability has impacted a variety of sectors and has generally led to a negative impact on Venezuelan citizens. This has caused a mass migration of Venezuelan citizens looking for positive economic and social opportunities in other countries. As it currently stands, Peru is the second country with the largest amount of Venezuelan migrants. Although the perception and integration of Venezuelan migrants have been studied in other Peruvian cities such as Lima, through my focus on the city of Tacna, the aim of this study is to provide a new perspective on previous research. Through a transnationalist theoretical perspective, this study will also be analyzing the diffusion and extension of social processes of Venezuelan migrants across international boundaries. This study primarily relies on interviews in order to generate data. There were two groups that were interviewed, Tacna residents, and Venezuelan migrants. Four Tacna residents were interviewed (two males, and two females), and three Venezuelan migrants were interviewed (two females, one male). Based on an analysis of the information gathered from each interview, it is possible to better understand the perception and integration of Venezuelan migrants in Tacna. Based on the results, it is possible to see that the perception of Tacneños in regards to Venezuelan immigration is the same as other parts of Peru. In regards to integration, the Venezuelans that were interviewed are integrating well into Tacneñan society. Lastly, the Venezuelan migrants that were interviewed have taken part in one form or another of transnational practices
“Not Yet a Priority:” The Intersectional Exploration of Labor Market Access for People with Disabilities
Approximately one in four families in Morocco are affected by disability. Of those affected by disability, many are in vulnerable situations, because there is an explicit linkage between having a disability and likelihood of experiencing poverty. The primary reasons for this phenomenon include lack of access to education, employment and health care. Following the Arab Spring, the Moroccan government implemented Article 166 which explicitly banned workplace discrimination against people with disabilities (PWD); however, only 13% of those affected by disability of working age can find employment. In this paper, I investigate the obstacles PWD face that prevent them from accessing the labor market and give insight as to where future in-depth research should be focused. The stigma that infiltrates every aspect of public and private life concerning PWD has led to flawed infrastructures, ineffective policies and public ambivalence that continues to limit their accessibility to basic rights and freedoms that would enable them to use their skills in the labor force
Mixed Responses to Woody Encroachment in Icelandic Herbaceous Plant Morphology and Phenology
Climate change and afforestation efforts are promoting tree growth into traditionally treeless locations in Iceland. This study examined this woody encroachment’s effect on the phenology and morophology of eight plants (Agrostis aequivalvis, Equisetum pratense, Equisetum arvense, Alchemilla alpina, Ranunculus acris, Lupinus nootkatensis, Anthriscus sylvestris, and Taraxacum sp.) in Kjarnaskógur forest, Akureyri, Iceland. An initial transplantation experiment testing trees’ effect on A. aequivalvis, E. pratense, R. acris, and A. sylvestris failed due to plant death. A subsequent observational study examined trees’ effect on E. pratense, A. alpina, R. acris, L. nootkatensis, A. sylvestris, and Taraxacum by observing morphological characteristics (leaf size, plant height, leaf number) in individuals (between 56 and 200 per species) within and outside of wooded environments. Some species grew larger leaves and experienced growth delays in a wooded environment, suggesting adaptation to competition. Other species grew smaller leaves in a wooded environment, suggesting outcompetition by trees. This suggests that the expansion of trees in Iceland will create morphological and phenological changes in herbaceous plants, possibly having ramifications throughout Icelandic ecosystems
Reimagining future sustainable, climate-resilient urban design for Apia, Samoa: Developing Plans for a Developing Nation
Small island developing states are arguably the most vulnerable, exposed nations on a global scale to the harmful effects of climate change. Particularly in Samoa, an abundance of environmental, economic, and social impacts have severe impacts on both the country as a whole as well as on an individual level. This study analyzes future mitigation strategies of land use and urban design to recreate Samoa’s capital of Apia as a more climate-resilient city to encourage economic growth and to ensure the well-being of all inhabitants. This planning is based upon current challenges of Samoa driven by climate change such as flooding, cyclone damage, and increased heat alongside adaptive capacity of the Pacific island to protect itself from the negative outcomes of climate change. Utilizing sustainable urban design, government mitigation strategies, disaster management, and education awareness Apia has great potential to improve its resilience to climate change. Qualitative data collected from personal interviews, Samoan government resources, international databases, and non-governmental organizations explained the impacts of climate change on Samoa while distributed surveys demonstrate the general public opinion of the urgency of response to climate change. Data analysis proved that there is a large disparity of climate change awareness between those formerly educated who are working in the formal economy such as government officers in comparison to unemployed individuals such as National University of Samoa (N.U.S) students. Altogether, this research presents a strong foundation for positive urban design and sustainable development adaptation to ensure a robust state of being for Apia as well as Samoa as an entity
