Evaluation of disulfiram and derivatives as antimicrobial adjuvants
Disulfiram (Antabuse) is an oral drug used for the treatment of alcohol dependence. Previous studies showed that disulfiram has antibiotic activity on multidrug-resistant bacteria. Here disulfiram was further evaluated for its ability to increase the potency of existing antimicrobials against the bacteria and yeast by acting as a drug adjuvant. Microbial cultures were treated with antibiotic or antifungal drugs in combination with disulfiram and its derivatives to determine whether potency is increased. The structure activity relationship (SAR) of disulfiram analogs was assessed against a triazole resistant Aspergillus panel. It showed that the shorter chained analogs of disulfiram are more potent against Aspergillus spp. In a separate study, this research examined whether disulfiram weakens bacteria to antibiotics. Bacterial cultures were re-exposed to disulfiram up to ten times then existing antibiotics were tested for potency. The increase in antibiotic potency gave evidence that disulfiram can lower the level of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This is particularly evident with the decreased minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for vancomycin (VAN) against the vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) and for ciprofloxacin and other fluoroquinolones against vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE)
Syntheses and characterization of isomeric 3-bromopropanol capped oligoviologens
The work described in this thesis has generated new oligoviologen structures designed to facilitate the formation of supermolecules that incorporate photoactive and redox-active groups. These viologens have several potential uses; for example, the 4+ oligoviologen (viologen 5) exhibits solvatochromic properties in various polar protic and polar aprotic solvents, indicating suitability for use as a solvatochromic dye. The syntheses of bis(4,4’-bipyridine)ortho-xylene, bis(4,4’-bipyridine)meta-xylene, and bis(4,4’-bipyridine)para-xylene were demonstrated through 1H NMR characterization and confirmed through literature. Bis(4,4’-bipyridine)ortho-xylene, bis(4,4’-bipyridine)meta-xylene, and bis(4,4’-bipyridine)para-xylene were produced in 68%, 72%, and 54% yields, respectively. 4,4’-Bipyridine-1-[4-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’- propanol, 4,4’-bipyridine-1-[3-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’-propanol, 4,4’-bipyridine-1-[2- (bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’-propanol, 4+ oligoviologen isomers, 6+ oligoviologen isomers, and 8+ oligoviologen isomers were new molecules. The syntheses of 4,4’-bipyridine-1-[4- (bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’-propanol, 4,4’-bipyridine-1-[3-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]- 1’-propanol, and 4,4’-bipyridine-1-[2-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’-propanol were confirmed by comparison to literature reported comparable compounds with similar 1H NMR peaks. 4,4’- Bipyridine-1-[2-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’-propanol, was produced in a 46% yield. 4,4’- bipyridine-1-[3-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’-propanol, was produced in a 40% yield. 4,4’- bipyridine-1-[4-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’-propanol was produced in a 42% yield. The 4+ oligoviologen ortho isomer yielded 1.02 g containing impurities, such as starting reagents. The 6+ oligoviologen para-para isomer yielded 0.38 g but contained impurities, such as starting reagents. The OOO 8+ oligoviologen isomer was synthesized, and its yield was determined to be 45% based on integrations from the 1H NMR spectrum peaks. The product was obtained in 45% yield due to impurities present in the sample

Navigating loyalty: exploring perceptions in family-owned businesses
Family businesses are crucial to the global economy, contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing a diverse workforce. Like any other business, familyowned businesses are not immune to employee turnover. Employee perception of business stability is a key indicator of the business\u27s health and resilience. This study aims to examine the relationship between employee perceptions of family business stability, business community involvement and turnover intentions using a quantitative survey. The survey was developed using validated scales and received approval (IRB #2206773) from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Marshall University prior to administering to family business employees via social media posts, emails, in-person visits to family businesses, and panels using the surveysoftware Qualtrics. The business owner’s involvement in the community is the independent variable, while employees’ perceptions of business stability will act as a mediator. Turnover intentions will be the dependent variable, with the employees’ level of community embeddedness serving as the moderator. Data will be analyzed using the PROCESS macro in SPS
From Classroom to Boardroom: an in-depth look at critical thinking amongst accounting students
The 2020 Guiding Principles and Standards of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accreditation Standard 4.3 requires business students to be equipped with critical and analytical thinking skills. Killian (2013) states that by engaging students in a problem-based case study in an introductory-level managerial accounting course, students can acquire critical thinking skills, rather than memorize. Results from this study suggest critical thinking skills increased when it came to detecting, explaining, and defining a problem. Just as significant, critical thinking skills increase when a student encounters a problem and can solve it and make a conclusion. The paper concludes with the students’ perceptions of the case study and reflections on the methodology utilized. Emphasis on soft skills, like critical thinking, can be increased without sacrificing emphasis on technical issues
