A Case of Herpes Zoster in an Immunocompetent 19-year-old Female
Get PDFThis case report describes the unusual presentation of herpes zoster in a fully vaccinated teenage patient and highlights management considerations. The patient is a 19-year-old female who presented with pain in her left lower back, side, and upper thigh for approximately 3 days, which was then followed by the eruption of a vesicular rash along the L2 dermatome consistent with herpes zoster. Herpes zoster is predominantly observed only in elderly and immunocompromised individuals, primarily due to the widespread use of the varicella-zoster virus vaccine for children since 1995, when it became part of the routine immunization schedule. However, this case serves as a noteworthy reminder for clinicians that herpes zoster should still be considered in immunocompetent and fully vaccinated younger patients

The Impact of OER’s Continuous Improvement Cycles on Students’ Performance: A Longitudinal Analysis of the RISE Framework
No full textOpen educational resources (OER) have been praised for revolutionizing education. However, practitioners and instructors battle keeping OER updated and measuring their impact on students’ performance. Few studies have analyzed the improvement of OER over time in relation to achievement. This longitudinal study uses learning analytics through the open-source Resource Inspection, Selection, and Enhancement (RISE) analysis framework to assess the impact of continuous improvement cycles on students’ outcomes. Panel data (i.e., performance and use) from 190 learning objectives of OER of an introductory sociology course were analyzed using a hierarchical linear model. Results show that more visits to an OER do not improve student achievement, but continuous improvement cycles of targeted OER do. Iterative implementation of the RISE analysis for resource improvement in combination with practitioners’ expertise is key for students’ learning. Given that the RISE classification accounted for 65% of the growth of students’ performance, suggesting a moderate to large effect, we speculate that the RISE analysis could be generalized to other contexts and result in greater student gain. Institutions and practitioners can improve the OER’s impact by introducing learning analytics as a decision-making tool for instructional designers. Yet, user-friendly implementation of learning analytics in a “click-and-go” application is necessary for generalizability and escalation of continuous improvement cycles of OER and tangible improvement of learning outcomes. Finally, in this article, we identify the need for efficient applications of learning analytics that focus more on “learning” and less on analytics

Get PDFThis paper is an examination of intimate partner violence shelter websites identified by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) across six states to include North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. A sample of 217 websites were identified through the NCADV and analyzed with focus on what information they contained. There is significant variability between website content. Most shelter websites provide crisis hotline information, operating information or that they operate 24/7, but basic information like the cost of the shelter or if transportation is provided is not always available. This paper makes recommendations to shelters to provide specific information on services available while also ensuring information on shelter websites is accurate and easy to find
A Rare Case of Visual Symptoms Due to Isotretinoin Therapy
Get PDFIsotretinoin has been a long-standing medication used to treat acne, with a gradual increase in the dose during therapy. A typical treatment course lasts 4-6 months.1 It has been shown to inhibit sebaceous gland functioning and keratinization.2 The most common adverse effects include xerostomia, cheilitis, dry nose, and sun sensitivity. Less common adverse effects include itching, irritation, hair thinning, dry eyes, rash, muscle aches, and joint pain.2 There has also been reported increased depression and suicidality as a result of Isotretinoin treatment.2 Notably, the black box warning on Isotretinoin is in its potential to cause severe birth defects.
Ocular side effects are less common but can include corneal opacities, decreased dark adaptation, keratitis, blurred vision, conjunctivitis, photophobia, myopia, Meibomian gland atrophy, and teratogenic ocular abnormalities.3
Only 1 case has been reported in the literature demonstrating visual hallucinations as a result of Isotretinoin treatment, which subsided when the treatment was discontinued.4 This report presents a second case of visual disturbance as a side effect of isotretinoin
