Philosophy Versus the Continental/Analytic Distinction
The distinction between analytic and continental philosophy is not a philosophical distinction. It is a sociological one, incorporating political and psychological dimensions. I shall argue that this distinction is a symptom of, most relevantly, professionalization, and that professionalization excludes philosophy. As a result, the only philosophically meaningful consequence that the analytic/continental distinction has is to alert us by conceptual contrast to what it is that we should concern ourselves with instead. This alternative focus is the a-professional contexts and features of actual philosophy. The analytic/continental distinction usefully points us to these as that to which the specific structure and disciplinary effects of this distinction are entirely irrelevant.

A distinção entre filosofia analítica e continental não é uma distinção filosófica. É uma distinção sociológica, que incorpora dimensões políticas e psicológicas. Vou argumentar que essa distinção é um sintoma, mais relevante, da profissionalização, e que a profissionalização exclui a filosofia. Como resultado, a única consequência filosoficamente significativa que a distinção analítica/continental tem é nos alertar, por contraste conceitual, sobre com o que deveríamos nos preocupar em vez disso. A 3D DLT view correction tool for manual digitizing: A cross-platform application for correcting shifted image coordinates prior to object coordinate reconstruction
While 3D direct linear transformation is a versatile motion capture method, care must be taken so that the cameras are not bumped or adjusted between the object space calibration phase and the end of video recording. Disturbing the cameras during this time will misalign the view, making the movement data invalid for the associated calibration. The purpose of this study was to design and validate a cross-platform software application for transforming image coordinates from a bumped camera to be compatible with the object space calibration and to determine the relationship between reconstruction error and changes to bumped camera views.
For the validation test, a cubic object space was defined by four survey poles. A reference line used to guide the transformations was represented by two markers inside of the object space. A physical reference object of known, fixed dimensions was placed inside the object space. The positions, orientations, and zoom amounts of one of two cameras facing the object space were changed by discrete amounts of up to 10 cm translation, 10° rotation, and ±50% magnification before recording to simulate bumps of the camera and an unwanted change in the camera view. Both cameras were then moved to the most extreme positions defined by the maximum translation, rotation, and magnification before recording. A frame from each video of every trial was extracted, digitized, and processed to obtain landmark coordinates of the survey poles and reference object. The frames representing the cameras’ neutral positions were designated as calibration frames. The application transformed the image coordinates for the bumped trials so that the trial and calibration reference lines overlapped. Errors between the known and calculated physical dimensions of the survey poles and reference object were calculated to determine the relationships between error and combinations of camera position, orientation, and magnification.
Error values were below the minimum detectable change of 36 mm. Object axis errors were reduced to about 1.1% when the application corrected trials in which the camera was perturbed. No practically significant error patterns or changes in the shape of errors across camera translation, rotation, or magnification were found. Global Y was consistently higher than global Z, which was consistently higher than global X. This matched the pattern of pole deviations in which global X was collinear with both poles that defined it, global Z deviated by 1°, and global Y deviated by 2°. The axes of the camera and the object space were not aligned, which, when coupled with the discretization of the projected lengths caused by finite resolution, resulted in a greater range of error in object x and for all axes when zoomed out.
All hypotheses were supported; error magnitudes were reduced without meaningful patterns. The application transformations reduced 2D and 3D coordinate error enough for the trials to be suitable for analysis. This means that in future biomechanics studies, fewer trials in which camera bump occurred will be discarded, resulting in more data available from which to draw conclusions
Homelessness and Uncertain Belonging of the Bhutanese Nepali Diaspora
Bhutanese Nepali Diaspora is a classic example of Nepali transnational community. Started centuries ago, it was massively developed in the 19th and 20th centuries before it was dispersed in the 21st century. Living in Bhutan as an agricultural and free-of-cost-labour community for the Bhutanese regime, they always believed that Nepali culture, language and king were their own. When Bhutan brought the ‘one culture, one nation’ policy in the 1980s, about a hundred thousand Bhutanese Nepalis were expelled and they returned to Nepal with the belief that Nepal as their ancestor’s land would accept them. But, as the diasporic communities mostly experience, Nepal provided them just the status of refugees. Their home and belonging were not sure for about two decades before they were resettled in the West i.e. Europe, America and Oceania. Now, the people of this community are dispersed in eight western countries, Nepal and Bhutan. In Bhutan, they live as a marginalized minority that cannot enjoy their language and culture; in Nepal, they are living as the refugees; and in the western nations, they are living with economic freedom but cultural constraints. Their literary expressions show that, in all these three spaces, they are not happy and are not sure about their real home and belonging. This chapter discusses the history of this dispersion in the light of the theory of transnationalism and diaspora with a special focus on the Bhutanese Nepali community’s homelessness and uncertain belonging. The data have been the historical documents of their migration and experiences along with their literary creations. Interpretation of the selected texts has highlighted the theme of the paper. Microhabitat selection of adult female eastern diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus) in the Carolinas
Reptiles rely on environmental conditions to regulate body temperature using behavioral strategies to meet basic life history needs. Viviparous squamates use thermoregulatory behaviors to meet energetic requirements for vitellogenesis and gestation, which carry considerable energetic costs and must balance with maintenance and survival. Embryonic development is often optimized in a narrower temperature range than the mother’s preferred temperature, creating an intergenerational conflict that should be addressed with maternal microhabitat selection. Field-based studies are needed to understand the link between the thermal biology of reptiles, their reproduction, and implications for population viability. With a use-availability logistic regression framework, I examined thermal and structural predictors of adult female gestation and overwintering microhabitat selection for the declining eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus; EDB) in the Carolinas. I expected reproductive females (vitellogenic females overwinter, gravid females during gestation) would select microhabitats with cooler or more stable temperatures, denser vegetative cover, and wetter soils to alleviate energetic costs associated with reproduction in a subtropical climate. Habitat models indicated female EDBs required access to a wide range of thermal microhabitat conditions (i.e., cool surface temperatures and warm soil temperatures during gestation, warm surface temperatures and cool soil temperatures while overwintering), suggesting female EDBs employ active thermoregulation most likely to alleviate metabolic effects of opposing seasonal thermal extremes. Overwintering females selected sites with greater coarse woody debris log cover, but other microhabitat structural predictors received little or no support. This work supports EDB conservation strategies incorporating life-history and emphasizes the importance of suitable thermal microhabitats for adult females, especially in context with climate change
Assessing the effectiveness of goal-directed versus stimulus driven visual search training at improving goalkeepers’ penalty kick save responses
Goalkeepers must perceive and analyze many different types of information in a short time to effectively move their bodies to make a save. Skilled goalkeepers enhance their actions by coupling them to information present in their environment. The information in their environment constantly changes, so the goalkeepers must adjust their strategies or positions to match the environmental demands. Goalkeepers use two types of perception and attentional strategies: stimulus-driven and goal-directed. Stimulus-driven perception is fast and compulsory, while goal-directed perception is slower and more methodical. Both visual search strategies direct the goalkeeper’s attention to where it is most needed and can be trained to improve goalkeeping performance and efficiency. Therefore, this thesis aimed to investigate the effect of visual perception training strategies on improving goalkeeping actions. It was hypothesized that goalkeepers who underwent visual perceptual training and goal-directed visual perceptual strategies would show greater improvements between reaction times and movement towards the ball during a save of a penalty kick compared to those without training or goalkeepers who used stimulus-driven perceptual strategies.
This study was designed to be observational with a longitudinal, repeated-measures analysis. Nine experienced soccer goalkeepers gave consent and participated in this study, and they were separated into three groups: video-control, stimulus-driven, and goal-directed. The subjects underwent a pre-and post-test with a 10-day visual training intervention in between. Both pre-and post-tests had the subjects try and save 6 randomized penalty kicks from the same kicker, and after each kick, the subjects verbalized their thoughts to the researcher. The training had the goalkeepers watch a compilation of 20 penalty kick videos for 10 days. The data were collected using a video camera, pressure-sensing insoles, and an IMU. The data collected from these devices were processed into discrete variables. Two-way, mixed-model ANOVA was conducted in SPSS to assess differences in the variables. A type I error rate was set at α=.01. A power analysis was conducted to determine the appropriate amount of people per group for statistical significance: a power of .8 and a Type I error rate of 10%. A qualitative analysis was used to investigate the participants’ think-aloud responses to assess how they used perceptual training strategies and how they might have benefitted from the training.
The data set was checked for normality, and no significant 2-way interactions were present within the data. Reaction time increased from pre- to post-test for our training groups. The stimulus-driven group confidently accelerated in the correct direction, while the goaldirected confidently and the video-control groups nervously accelerated in the wrong direction. The stimulus-driven group also moved faster in the y-direction compared to the other two groups.
The first hypothesis was not supported because there were no positive differences from pre- to post-testing for any variable, and reaction time increased for all participants. The second hypothesis was not supported because we predicted the goal-directed group would show the most improvement when the stimulus-driven group became the most successful after training. There was human error because we employed human kickers instead of robots. Not all the shots went to the exact right place; sometimes, they were just close enough to count, or it took the kicker a few tries, which could have thrown the goalkeepers off their rhythm. We were unable to mediate subject training due to conflicting schedules, so not all subjects completed the full regime. Shifted equipment caused incomplete data in some trials. Our main finding of this study was that stimulus-driven training was better at improving goalkeeping performance

Revision of the genus \u3ci\u3eOlivierus\u3c/i\u3e in Xinjiang, China, with comments on \u3ci\u3eMesobuthus thersites\u3c/i\u3e (Scorpiones: Buthidae)
The genus Olivierus Farzanpay, 1987 in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, is revised based on recently collected topotypes and other populations from 12 localities. Brief differential diagnoses are provided, with colored illustrations and photos in vivo habitus, emphasizing the key characters. Chinese appellations, conservation status, and documentation of behavior and post-envenomation symptoms are also included. Only two species are now recognized for this genus in Xinjiang: O. longichelus (Sun & Zhu, 2010) and O. przewalskii (Birula, 1897), based on both morphological and molecular evidence. The two species exhibit extensive distribution in Xinjiang (China) while also occurring in adjacent countries. Three new synonyms are proposed: Mesobuthus bolensis Sun et al., 2010 = Olivierus longichelus (Sun & Zhu, 2010), syn. n.; Mesobuthus karshius Sun & Sun, 2011 = Olivierus longichelus (Sun & Zhu, 2010), syn. n.; Olivierus tarabaevi Fet et al., 2021 = Olivierus longichelus (Sun & Zhu, 2010), syn. n. Two species, Olivierus extremus (Werner, 1936) and O. hainanensis (Birula, 1904), are likely synonymous with O. martensii (Karsch, 1879). Should future examination confirm this assumption, the total number of species in genus Olivierus would be reduced to 16
More Physicians Alone Won’t Solve Rural America’s Health Care Problems
Policymakers have voiced their hope that locating family doctors and other primary care physicians within rural communities would, by itself, improve the health status of rural residents. However, access does not necessarily translate to better health. Rural populations face disproportionately worse health outcomes and inequities compared to urban populations. To improve the health care of rural America, it is critical to define—and periodically reassess—the problem and identify varying targeted policies
