Policing impacts on racial and regional oppression in Appalachia
Get PDFAppalachians continue to face the lasting effects of generations of state violence. Residents are often met with economic, environmental, physical, and mental hardships that are specific to these regions. Namely, the intersection of race with these region-specific hardships creates unique issues for Black Appalachians. Black Appalachians have a distinct history connecting the cultural nuances of the Appalachian region with the overall history of racial inequality in the USA. The following highlights Black Appalachian experiences by exploring the relationship between state violence, policing, and race in the region. Utilizing qualitative interviews with Black individuals in Appalachians, results gain a more detailed understanding of their experiences while providing more insight on racial injustices tied to policing in these region

Counseling Young Adults Regarding Spiritual Wellness: The Need and The Practice
Get PDFThe authors explore literature discussing an increasing level of anxiety and depression in young adults connected to struggles with meaning and purpose. The authors present the challenges of young adulthood as a developmental stage, highlighting the role that spiritual/religious exploration can occupy in counseling. Exploring the barriers counselors report to integrating spirituality into counseling, the authors propose counselors utilize the Ways Paradigm framework to support young adults with their spiritual wellness, giving examples of ways of understanding, ways of being and ways of intervening for working with clients with diverse religious/spiritual beliefs. The authors conclude with a case study and share implications for counselor educators and clinical practitioners
AI Meets AI: ChatGPT as a Pedagogical Tool to Teach American Indian History
Get PDFOur paper illustrates how we used Artificial Intelligence to teach the tools of ethnohistory and highlight American Indian voices in our classrooms. It overviews our integration of ChatGPT in both survey and upper-level history courses at two different institutions: a small liberal arts college in the Midwest and a regional-comprehensive university in Texas. Though it acknowledges the benefits and pitfalls of using ChatGPT to teach Native American history, this article emphasizes the pedagogical value of large language models (LLMs) for student engagement and analytical thinking through a variety of critical review, peer review, and group annotation assessments; this included analyses of ChatGPT produced book reviews and textbook chapter summaries. Consequently, our findings illustrate that large language model-generated projects encourages students to think critically about the perpetuation of dominant, Eurocentric historical narratives and challenges students to identify and deconstruct the problematic ways that Native Americans and other minority groups in American history are approached in both academic and non-academic settings. Our paper provides a template that instructors can apply to motivate student inquiry in the history of marginalized groups. In so doing, our goal is to teach students and educators in the Humanities how to use this new technology to supplement rather than subvert the learning process

First Generation College Student Transitions: Informing Counseling Practices for Emerging Adults

A Case of Occlusive Myocardial Infarction Caused by Nephrotic Syndrome in a 26-Year-Old Type 1 Diabetic
Get PDFNephrotic syndrome is a rare condition distinguished by proteinuria exceeding 3g per day. Other associated characteristics include hematuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema, and hyperlipidemia. There is an array of complications of this syndrome, which are primarily due to the profound losses of protein in the urine. One such complication is thromboembolism, with most documented cases in the form of venous thromboembolism of the extremities which is in part due to urinary loss of antithrombin III and increased synthesis of prothrombotic factors. There are limited available data regarding arterial thrombi and especially few reports about coronary thromboses, which can be life-threatening. In this report, we present the case of a 26-year-old patient with known nephrotic syndrome who developed an occlusive myocardial infarction from coronary artery thrombosis after a delay in care. We discuss the need for prompt diagnosis and treatment of nephrotic syndrome. Additionally, we review the differences between primary and secondary etiologies as well as their management
