    Teflon Replacement in Pans

    The purpose of the project is to determine an optimal prepping method of common cooking oils for pans that will be as effective as Teflon non-stick pans. The reason for this is to replace Teflon coating in pans, which can be very toxic for humans and the environment. Teflon has been a common coating for non-stick surfaces that is useful when cooking things such as eggs. To determine an optimal cooking method, three different oils were used: olive oil, vegetable oil, and shortening. The oils were tested on an aluminum pan by cooking egg whites at various temperatures, cooking times, and amounts of oil, which were then compared to the results from using a Teflon pan. The amount of egg stuck to the surface was measured and used for comparison. The results show that using at least 5 grams of oil when cooking 5 grams of egg whites will yield results similar to those from using a Teflon pan. Removing the need for Teflon will limit the amount of PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) that humans and animals are exposed to in the environment

    Knockout of Endospanin 1 via CRISPR in Zebrafish, Danio rerio

    I made endospanin 1 knockout (KO) zebrafish to examine its effects on lipid and bone metabolism. Endospanin 1, or leptin receptor overlapping transcript (leprot), is a cytosolic protein linked to the protein hormone leptin that influences the trafficking of leptin receptors to the plasma membrane of cells. Genes for endospanin and tyrosinase (a pigmentation enzyme) were targeted via a microinjection of guide RNAs and CRISPR Cas9 into zebrafish embryos at 2-4 cell stages. I was able to disrupt the endospanin 1 gene (based upon the disruption of tyrosinase), but very few mutant zebrafish fully developed into adults. Only low KO mosaic zebrafish survived to early adulthood. If the assumption that endospanin 1 affects bone metabolism is supported, the results would suggest that endospanin 1’s elimination may prevent bones from properly forming during zebrafish development

    Architectural Paint Tank Cleaning

    Architectural paint is highly susceptible to bacterial contamination, so material preservative ingredients are added during production to prevent bacterial contamination which can lead to wet-state spoilage of paint. In recent years however, paint formulations have reduced or eliminated volatile organic compounds (VOC) and regulations on the use of material preservative ingredients have been increased, reducing the use of traditional material preservatives. As a result, the coating industry must focus on improving microbial control through manufacturing hygiene programs including process tank cleaning and sanitization. While requirements for tank cleaning are clearly outlined in standard operating procedures (SOPs) and internal standards, there is currently no recommendation or procedure for the best way to clean a tank. Tank washing methods vary, but the most common method is a time consuming, manual activity carried out by operators. This project will identify current cleaning process focused on thin down and let down tanks, fill heads, tubs and bowls for architectural sites and determine good/better/best methods based on current state. Outside products and vendors will then be evaluated to determine the best method between current and future state options. Important variables that will be considered will include time, cost, manual labor, cleanliness, water use, and tank configuration

    Effect of an Oncogenic HER2 Mutant on EGFR Activity

    Studies have shown that HERs are involved in the progression of human cancers. Researchers have found that HER2 mutations in colorectal cancer are similar to mutations found in breast cancer. Recombinant antibodies are effective therapeutic treatments for cancers. Antibodies can also be used to determine how proteins function under normal and pathophysiological conditions while also identifying interacting partners. In this Honors Project, my aim is to investigate the effect of an oncogenic mutant of HER2. Considering the information above, the question researched in this project was: how does the S310F mutation affect the organization and function of HER2? The specific goal of this research project is to determine the effect of the HER2 mutation on EGFR activity. My approach for this project is to carry out a phosphorylation assay of EGFR in the presence of HER2 wild-type (WT) and the HER2 mutant S310F. The results of this project will be able to build off of past HER-2 research in efforts of applying it to cancer research

    Global Minimum Search for the Largest Ge Cage Stabilized by a Single Interstitial Metal Atom

    Recent joint experimental and theoretical studies showed that the largest Ge cage-like cluster features 14 Ge atoms that encapsulate a single transition metal atom in the [Nb@Ge14]3- cluster. The next larger experimentally confirmed Ge cluster exhibiting a cage-like geometry was found to be viable only when stabilized by two transition metal atoms in the [Co2@Ge16]4- cluster. So, as of now, it is not clear whether a cage-like cluster made out of 15 Ge atom stabilized by a single transition metal is viable. Hence, the aim of this project is to find the largest Ge cage stabilized by a single interstitial metal atom. Using the global minimum search algorithm it is planned to find the most stable structure of the formula [M@Ge15]x on the potential energy surface (global minimum) and inform experimentalists which metal to choose to synthesize the cage-like framework of 15 Ge atoms. The initial search is planned on the largest transition metal atoms. Using computational methods, the structures of the [M@Ge15]x clusters will be explored and a table of the lowest relative energy conformations will be compiled within 30 kcal/mol. The most stable isomers within 30 kcal/mol were re-calculated at a higher level of theory.     Using two Arduino microcontrollers, level and temperature Proportional-Integral control systems for a continuously stirred tank reactor were designed and configured. Open-loop step tests were performed and fitted with First Order Plus Time Delay responses so that controller tuning parameters could be analytically derived. The effectiveness of the designed systems was evaluated by monitoring the response of closed-loop setpoint changes

    Buoyancy and Emergence in Elymus Species

    It is important that native plants are able to successfully emerge in wetlands because they play an important role in maintaining diversity. The relationship between seed buoyancy and seedling emergence was analyzed for three wetland species of the same genus: Elymus canadensis (FACU), Elymus macgregorii (FACW), and Elymus virginicus (FACW). E. macgregorii seemed to be the most buoyant, and E. virginicus and E. canadensis demonstrated very similar, less buoyant levels. Based on the idea that more buoyant seeds will be deposited at a shallow depth, and less buoyant seeds will be deposited at a deeper soil level, a relationship between depth of the artificially placed seed and the ability to emerge was evident in the FACW species. E. macgregorii was less buoyant (with respect to the other two species) and more successful in emerging from a shallow depth. E. virginicus was more buoyant and more successful in emerging from a deep soil level. This relationship was not observed in the FACU species. E. canadensis was more buoyant and more successful in emerging from a shallow depth

    A Different Way to Penetrate NBA Defenses

    This project proposal will document the design, configuration, and penetration testing of a network consisting of three routers (labeled as Lakers, Celtics, Cavaliers), one switch (labeled as NBA), and three end devices (labeled as Kali, Windows 10, and Ubuntu) each connected to one of three routers present on the network. Each router will be attached to a different subnet on the network. The network will be secured using encrypted passwords on the router interfaces, OSPF MD5 authentication between the routers, port security on the switch, as well as Access Control Lists to to control the privileges of each subnetwork accordingly. In this example, the Kali Linux end device, located on the Lakers subnet, will perform three penetration tests on the network in the form of vulnerability scanning with Metasploit and Nmap, attempting to create a reverse TCP connection with the Windows 10 end device on the Celtics subnet through the standalone payload generator msfvenom, attempting to gain the login credentials to the Cavaliers router through the password cracker John the Ripper, and using the Social Engineering Toolkit to perform a phishing attack on the Ubuntu end device located on the Cavaliers subnet

    XYZ Landing Gear Solutions has been tasked with redesigning two internal components of the landing gears for the ABC-123 aircraft program. The customer, ABC Aeronautics, informed XYZ Landing Gear Solutions that a particular system of the landing gear does not meet the necessary performance requirements of the program. As a result, the entire system will have to be removed, facilitating the need for a redesign of the two components that the system interfaced with. The focus of this project will be completing the redesign process for both of these components. “Redesign” and “design” will be used interchangeably in this report. The scope of this report will be limited to only the design of the new components and will not discuss, at least not in detail, the manufacturing and installation of the new components. Following the design process outlined in this report, a final detailed design of each component will be completed, while also following all requirements from ABC Aeronautics

    Physiological responses between collegiate female athletes versus collegiate female non-athletes to body image, nutrition, and mental health inquiries.

    Participation in college athletics poses numerous demands on young adults. Not only are there academic demands to remain eligible for competition, but there are physical and mental demands that often go unnoticed. With all these demands, it is understandable how one\u27s nutrition, body image, and mental health may go on the back burner, resulting in insufficiencies in all three categories. The results from this study suggest that athletes displayed stronger physiological responses with respect to heart rate and blood pressure when responding to the surveys surrounding the topics of mental health, body image, and nutrition as compared to non-athletes. The presence of elevated physiological responses to these topics can assist in suggesting that these topics have a higher stress inducing effect on athletes as compared to non-athletes. We hope to inspire additional research on this important topic and continue to prove its relevance in college athletics, specifically for female athletes
