Ensemble Classification: An Analysis of the Random Forest Model
The random forest model proposed by Dr. Leo Breiman in 2001 is an ensemble machine learning method for classification prediction and regression. In the following paper, we will conduct an analysis on the random forest model with a focus on how the model works, how it is applied in software, and how it performs on a set of data. To fully understand the model, we will introduce the concept of decision trees, give a summary of the CART model, explain in detail how the random forest model operates, discuss how the model is implemented in software, demonstrate the model by applying it to a set of data, evaluate the performance of the model, and finally compare the model and its performance to the simpler CART model. By the end, a reader should have an introductory understanding of decision tree methodology, be knowledgeable about the mechanics of both the CART and random forest models, an understand both the benefits and hindrances of the random forest model
Statistical Modeling of Bankruptcy Data
My project uses a dataset of bankrupt and non-bankrupt companies in Taiwan from 1999 to 2009. This data was collected from the Taiwan Economic Journal. The statistical methods I used to model the data are CHAID, CART, and logistic regression. The models created are tools that can predict if a company is bankrupt, or not-bankrupt based on other data about the company. I created multiple models for each of the methods to find the best model for each method. I then analyzed the output from each method. Lastly, I determined which model was the best for this data based on the model\u27s accuracy in predicting the bankruptcy status of companies
Battery Dunnage
Schaeffler is launching a new assembly line for a battery in 2025. As part of the project, it is necessary to design and fabricate a reusable dunnage (packaging) specialized for the battery, meant for safe domestic transportation in the United States. Through an iterative process, the team developed a final dunnage design out of steel components that had a maximum footprint of 62 in X 43.5 in X 29.25 in and a weight of 821.682 lbs. The dunnage is stackable on itself up to two high, weighing a total of 4,918.724 lbs. when loaded with four batteries. The design was verified with Finite Element Analysis, which confirmed high strength and minimal stress and strain concentrations while under static loading. However, testing effectiveness during transportation remains uncertain, requiring additional testing for vibration and dynamic forces. Cost analysis was also performed with an estimate of $2,521.43 per dunnage, best made in quantities of six units
Stanley Black and Decker Slag Removal Design Project
My group given the task of designing a system to remove the slag of large metal plates. Removing this slag is an important step in creating the final assembly of a model. Currently we the operators are flipping the plates using a large magnet and crane. The issue that we see with the current method is the risk of injury while having the plate suspended in the air. These plates can reach upwards of 600lbs and poses a serious threat to the operators if the magnet is not secured correctly. Our new system for removing the slag is designed to minimize risk of injury and speed up the process, thus increasing efficiency. We will employ the design criteria from classes in the mechanical engineering curriculum as well as run a finite element analysis on our chosen design to test it under the maximum load cases
Effects of AC Interference on Pipelines Under Cathodic Protection and Cathodic Disbondment of Pipeline Coatings
This project is split into two parts. The first revolves around AC interference on pipeline steel under cathodic protection. The corrosion rate of steel samples will be measured after they are exposed to varying levels of AC interference and cathodic protection. The results will be used to help develop new guidelines for appropriate cathodic protection of steel pipelines. The second part of this project revolves around the cathodic disbondment of pipeline coatings while under cathodic protection. The disbondment distance, electrolyte pH, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy will be tested for multiple industry standard coatings under various conditions. The results will be used to help elevate the industry\u27s understanding of cathodic disbondment of pipeline coatings
The Smell of Fear: Responses of Native and Invasive Geckos to Predator Scent Cues on Moorea, French Polynesia
Hemidactylus frenatus, a globally invasive species, is syntopic with the native gecko Lepidodactylus lugubris on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia. The success of an invasive species, H. frenatus can be attributed to many factors and is the subject of much study. Some research suggests that invasive and native geckos may differ in their response to chemosensory cues from predators. We compared the responses of H. frenatus and L. lugubris to the scents of both a native local predator; centipede, and a common predator of geckos that is not present on Moorea; snake. While neither gecko species showed any significant avoidance of the scent of the snake, both species strongly avoided the scent of the native centipede, a shared predator on Moorea. Our results help narrow the search for factors associated with the success of H. frenatus on Moorea and possibly other locations where the species is invasive

Aggregation-Induced Emission Probe for Alzheimer\u27s Detection and Treatment Screening
The proposed project is to research if ROF-2, an aggregation-induced emitter, can be used to screen medications for Alzheimer\u27s Disease and to accurately detect this disease, along with its progression. This will be done through multiple incubation periods using different identifiers that have already been solidified within Alzheimer\u27s research to prove its ability and accuracy within screening and detection regarding this disease

Symposium: Gender, Health, and the Constitution: The New Gender Panic in Sport: Why State Laws Banning Transgender Athletes are Unconstitutional
This essay considers the role of sport in the new gender panic of legislative activity targeting transgender individuals, which now extends into health and family governance. Sport was one of the first settings—the gateway—to ignite the current culture war on transgender youth. This analysis examines how Title IX of the Education Act of 1972, the popular law responsible for the growth of opportunities for girls and women in sports, has been mobilized in service of a broader gender agenda. Far from providing a persuasive justification for the state laws banning transgender girls from girls’ sports, Title IX, properly understood, supports the case for transgender inclusion, not exclusion. Lacking a genuinely substantial connection to the preservation of girls’ and women’s athletic opportunities, state laws excluding transgender girls and women from sports violate the Equal Protection Clause. And these laws also have implications to health more generally and to other constitutional controversies
