The Juxtaposition of Film Education: Explorations for Implementing a Film Curriculum in Public Schools

    Get PDF
This thesis is based on the belief that film should be treated with the same respect and inclusion that the fine arts receive in public school curricula. Also, this thesis is based on the belief that as technology and media expands in our society students should be further prepared to work in a world that utilizes this technology. This thesis is approached from personal and professional interests in both the film and art education fields and investigates whether film classes should be more present in public schools’ curricula and, if so, what are some of the best ways to offer film classes to students. The key method of investigation in this thesis is a survey and questionnaire, which guides the thesis project and informs future teaching possibilities. The questionnaire and study examines responses from several school districts in regards to their film courses and their take on the current state of these courses. Their input contributed to a proposed yearlong high school film curriculum for school districts to integrate film into their current art department, which was developed and presented as a key component of this thesis project. The information available in this study can assist teachers and school administrators in recognizing how film can deepen students’ learning and further prepare them for a technological and media-driven society

Dexmedetomidine Use in the Pediatric Postoperative Patient with Emergence Agitation: A Systemic Review

    Get PDF
Emergence Agitation is a frequent complication in the pediatric postoperative population; with up to 80% incidence (Stamper, Hawks, Taicher, Bonta & Brandon, 2014). These patients will present with crying, overexcitement, thrashing, agitation and is seen within the first 30 minutes of emergence of general anesthesia (Mohkamkar, Farhoudie, Alam-Sahebpour, Mousavi, Khani & Shamomhammadi, 2014). Dexmedetomidine, a selective alpha 2 agonist, reduces norepinephrine output, initiates firing of inhibitory neurons such as the gama aminobutric acid system and reduces release of substance P and other catecholamines. These actions provide the patient with sedation, analgesia, and anesthesia (Nagelhout & Elisha, 2018). Due to the mechanism of action of dexmedetomidine, bradycardia and hypotension have been seen in pediatric patients. This has put a limit on the use of dexmedetomidine in this population. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine efficacy and side effects of various doses of dexmedetomidine to prevent emergence agitation in the pediatric postoperative patient. A comprehensive literature review was completed with the use of CINAHL Plus with full text, PubMed and Google Scholar. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), was used as guidelines to assist in proper identification of articles. The quality and critical appraisal of each randomized control trial was determined by the Critical Appraisal for Summaries of Evidence (CASE) worksheet. A cross study analysis table was created and used to analyze results of all studies. The findings of this systematic review determined dexmedetomidine was beneficial in emergence agitation prevention. Dexmedetomidine dosed at 0.5 mcg/kg-1mcg IV boluses and 1 mcg/kg – 2 mcg/kg intranasal sprays provided good relief with limited adverse effects

Critical Care Nurses\u27 Attitudes Towards End-of-Life

    Get PDF
The goal of this project was to identify current attitudes in end-of-life care and evaluate the needs for additional education to improve patient outcomes. Two categories were observed within the survey results; nurses\u27 attitudes towards family members of the terminally ill patients and the nurses\u27 attitudes towards caring for dying patients. Overall, the survey indicated a high confidence and positive attitude in both patient and family care. Nurses should continue to advocate and deliver optimal end-of-life patient care and reflect on their personal beliefs that may challenge caring for dying patients and their families

    Other Worldly Glimpses

For my honors project, I decided to develop my series of short stories to reflect the different types of worlds that are built within the fantasy genre. Modernly, the terms “low fantasy” and “high fantasy” have begun to be defined as the subgenres of fantasy. These two terms have been debated, some writers and/or readers having slightly different opinions on what each encompasses. In general, low fantasy is defined as a world in which there are fantastical elements, but the story takes place within the world we live. High fantasy, on the other hand, is a world imagined by the author, entirely separate from our world (though there are various things within these other worlds that may resemble ours). The first short story in this series, “What a Life”, is a modern fairytale that represents the more tradition fantasy genre. This story is the most realistic, taking place in the real world with a single magical element. The second story in this series, “Chasing Approval”, is my interpretation of low fantasy, taking place within our world but including a secret, magical society hidden within the normal world. The third story, “Dagger of Deviation” is my interpretation of high fantasy, the tale taking place in a world completely separate from ours. Since modern fantasy is often long-length fiction, these low fantasy and high fantasy short stories, despite being able to stand alone, reflect more developed worlds that have been condensed to only include aspects of the world vital for the tale given. With these three stories in this particular order, I have created a series that represents the varying degrees of fantasy worlds
