Love vs Duty?: Resisting the Idealized Woman and Subverting The Perennial Choice for Women in Opera
Get PDFThis thesis serves to be an analysis of the stereotypes that women in opera tend to have as well as of common traits or outcomes that these characters experience. While there is discussion on how these traits have been harmful, the idea of opera being a method for these characters to be envoiced in a way that other genres couldn’t be able to do is explored, and is specifically focused on three case studies of women defying the destinies set upon them while still emerging triumphant. The first case mentioned is in the Baroque opera L’incoronazione di Poppea, where the titular character uses her cunning to manipulate those around her into crowning her the Empress of Rome. The second case is in Il barbiere di Siviglia, where the main female character Rosina uses her wits to trick her guardian to be with the man she loves. The final case in The Tender Land breaks typical conventions of choosing love or duty/ power, with the main female character Laurie ultimately choosing herself in order to achieve her best possible life. At this thesis’ conclusion, the different avenues of what envoicing could take outside of what was discussed are mentioned (exoticism, mad scenes, etc.) as well as how envoicing of women has developed over time
Greening the Green: Examining the Resource Use of Golf Courses with Suggestions on How to Improve their Sustainability
Get PDFGolf is a journey full of challenges, requiring each player to strive for precision, rather than merely a game of getting a small, dimpled ball in a cup hundreds of yards away in the fewest strokes possible The game is both physical and mental; it tests one’s focus, decision making, and resilience. Those who play competitively rarely feel as though they are competing against another player, instead their opponent is the course. And for those who play recreationally, the game can be a time to reconnect with nature, foster both old and new friendships, or enjoy the pursuit for perfection. Every hole, course, and round brings new and unique obstacles, ensuring no two rounds are ever the same.
The motivations for this topic - my love for golf and my passion for environmental protection - are very near and dear to my heart. These two interests started to develop at 15 years old, when I picked up my first golf club. By 16, I found myself deeply interested in nature and sustainability. I imagine that the experience of spending countless hours striving for a perfect golf swing and putting stroke, surrounded by the evergreen trees and the views of the North Cascade mountains in Washington state, was part of what developed my love for the outdoors. One of the reasons I love golf is that the game uniquely integrates the natural environment with human skill, where the interaction between nature and players is central to the game. I have learned to notice the small things in the outdoor world, such as the strength and directional changes from the wind, and how to apply the wind to my next shot to produce the best results. Although my love for both the sport and the environment have grown, so has my stress and concern for the future. As climate change continues to progress, I know changes must be made to our everyday lives to ensure a sustainable and livable future.
With growing concerns of the ecological footprint left by golf courses (Bekken, 2022; Syngeta, 2022), I have dealt with much internal conflict regarding the environmental impact of golf courses. I shared the same worries that the public also holds; the idea that golf courses are environmentally damaging, specifically in their use of land, water, and chemicals. In recent years, social media has brought these concerns to the forefront, leading many to question the importance of the game. One notable tweet reads “water exemptions for GOLF COURSES (sic) during apocalyptic droughts tells us everything we need to know about the nature of our government and who they are there to serve,” underscoring not only environmental impacts but also the exclusivity associated with the sport (Syngenta, 2022).
With this in mind, I wanted to use the opportunity presented through the Honor Scholar thesis to explore these concerns in the hopes that I might be able to present solutions for golf’s sustainability problem. This research also gave me an opportunity to learn more about golf from an academic perspective. Before discussing the methods and results of my analysis, I present what I have learned about this amazing sport. This context is important because it reveals how golf has always involved an intimate connection to landscape as well as some of the interesting traditions that have helped it become culturally relevant

A Quantitative Survey of Goldenrods and their Galls in Greencastle, Indiana.
Get PDFDuring the spring to summer months, galls—an abnormal growth of plant tissue—are commonly found on goldenrod plants. Some of the most common galls that plague goldenrods are the rosette, ball, and elongated galls caused by different flies and midges. This study set out to quantitatively survey goldenrod galls of those three types in Greencastle, Indiana and their potential fitness effects. The literature currently available focuses heavily on the relationships between ball galls and goldenrods, while the other gall types are understudied. This finding was especially surprising considering that the results of our data analysis suggests that the rosette galls were the most popular— with the difference being significant across sites.https://scholarship.depauw.edu/srfposters/1161/thumbnail.jp
Inside Indochina: Vietnam\u27s National Identity through French Historical Blockbusters
Get PDFCinema has been credited for contributing to the understanding of one\u27s nation. In the case of the former French Indochina, despite being a well studied historical subject, few movies have been made about it, even fewer have taken place within those geographical borders. This paper will uncover the Vietnamese government’s intervention in portraying the Indochina state on Western screens, and what their cinematic vision of the colonial French-Indochina chapter in their history might look like. In 1992, three French blockbusters, Indochine, L’Amant, and Dien Bien Phu, were released and concurrently provided artistic lenses into the former colonial state. This trio have been researched together and separately in terms of visual and cultural analyses, especially in relation to the French colonial legacy and national identity, thanks to their international accolades. Findings from scholars Panivong Nodrinr and Tess Do also point to press materials and records on the on-location productions in Vietnam. Specifically, evidence suggests that the Vietnamese government had offered support as well as imposed supervision and censorship at different levels during pre-production, primary photography and domestic release. In my close inquiry into these movies, censorship impacted each movie uniquely, resulting in different receptions in Vietnam and contrasting portraits of Indochina. Not just a speculation of whether the research subjects are of historical significance to Vietnamese culture, this study poses questions on the current government’s impact of the mediated construction of national identity in the case of factual sceneries and imagined borders.https://scholarship.depauw.edu/srfposters/1152/thumbnail.jp
Racial Disparities in Cesarean Section Rates Between Non-Hispanic Black and Non-Hispanic White Populations in the United States
Get PDFThis study uses national natality data from the National Vital Statistics System, provided by the National Center for Health Statistics, covering the years 2011 to 2018 (N = 23,810,031) to investigate racial disparities in cesarean section (C-section) rates between non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White mothers in the United States. This analysis offers a comprehensive perspective on the factors contributing to C-section disparities by considering mothers\u27 demographic characteristics, health conditions, and infant health status. Using multivariable logistic regression, the findings reveal consistently higher C-section rates for non-Hispanic Black mothers compared to non-Hispanic White mothers, with the gap widening over time. Even after adjusting for sociodemographic and health-related factors, non-Hispanic Black mothers remained more likely to undergo C-sections. Using Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition methods, key factors contributing to this C-section rates disparity include maternal age, the source of delivery payment, and fetal presentation. This study highlights the pressing need for further investigation into healthcare system factors and racial inequities driving these disparities, alongside the growing urgency for policy and practical interventions to reduce unnecessary C-sections

Focusing on an anonymised location in California during the sub-prime crisis, the book explores issues of segregation and gentrification in US schools and communities, while looking at how youth and families work to produce, contest, question, resist, and engage racialized space in and beyond schools.

KIRINUKI will utilize Google search within a web application to allow users to explore topics and embed ChatGPT to summarize an article. All articles read in a month are gathered as a monthly report. Users can explore topics by using Google search within a web application page and decide what topic they learn in a week at the beginning of each week. Once they decide on the topic, they will find an article through Google search and choose one article daily. Users can edit the library page to keep useful resource links for future use. After reading an article, users will record the article\u27s information including a website link, any picture of the article, and an article summary by ChatGPT.
