Distinguishing the Extinct Dire Wolf from other Canids based on Bony Labyrinth Morphology
The dire wolf was a large wolf-like canid that occurred across North America and into South America during the late Pleistocene but does not have a well understood origin. Recent molecular findings using genetic evidence do not agree with prior characterizations of divergence based on morphology. Alternative morphological characters may be identified from the bony labyrinth within the inner ear, which has previously been used to identify ecological and phylogenetic relationships within families, even distinguishing between subspecies. The right bony labyrinth was successfully isolated from two dire wolf skulls and reconstructed into 3D models which were compared to eight extant canid species. Differences in semicircular canal shape, size, and orientation of relative angles to the vestibule and cochlea are observable between dire wolf and extant canids. These results warrant further examination to fully investigate their potential use in phylogenetic analyses and ecological interpretation for dire wolf

To Change or Not to Change: The Impact of Parent Emotion Socialization on Adolescents’ Implicit Theory of Emotions
Holding a belief that emotions are uncontrollable has been found to relate to several negative impacts (De France & Hollenstein, 2021; Ford et al., 2018; Kappes & Schikowski, 2013; Tamir et al., 2007), but the origin of this belief is not well known. It is known, however, that parents play an important role in their child’s emotional development through the way they respond to their emotions (Eisenberg et al., 1998; Morris et al., 2017). Thus, it was postulated that parent emotion socialization may impact youth implicit theory of emotions later in adolescence. Results found that parental Reward of negative emotions related to stronger beliefs that emotions can be changed in adolescence, whereas fathers’ Magnification of negative emotions related to weaker beliefs that emotions can be changed in adolescence. All in all, these findings may help inform guidance of parenting strategies that promote emotion beliefs that support adolescent mental health
Cattle Regenerative Grazing Effects on Bat Activity in Southern Appalachia
Livestock farming accounts for about 70% of agricultural activity, with continuous grazing as the dominant conventional practice. However, this method often degrades biodiversity and ecosystem health through overgrazing. Regenerative grazing practices offer a potential ecologically sustainable approach to cattle management. Insectivorous bats are known to use agroecosystems for foraging and roosting habitats, offering an opportunity to assess their response to regenerative grazing. Using passive acoustic monitors, we evaluated the response of bats to cattle within regenerative grazed farms in East Tennessee, USA. Overall bat activity declined when cattle entered and exited paddocks, except for the tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus), which did not show a negative response. We found that insect abundance was not significantly influenced in paddocks subject to cattle presence, during a rotational grazed agroecosystem. These findings provide new insights into the interactions between bats and cattle, as well as the impact of regenerative grazing on insectivorous bat populations
