Professional growth through “Reflection” of beginning childcare professional : Through a longitudinal examination of “Awareness from children’s appearance”
The purpose of this study is to examine what kind of awareness there is from the appearance of children and how that awareness is transformed, through reflections by beginning childcare professional on their own childcare. The subjects of the study were male childcare professional working at a nursery school in Tokyo, Japan. Participatory observations and interviews with the study subjects were conducted contin-uously for one year. The two records that were analyzed were (1) the childcare provider’s narrative of his reflections on his childcare practice, and (2) the first author’s record of his participation observation. The procedure for analysis is as follows: (1) Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis will be used as an aid in order to focus on the individual experience of caregivers reflecting on their own childcare. (2) Through the analysis of (1), from the perspective that was considered to be a turning point in the transformation of the child caregivers’ “awareness from the child’s appearance,” observation records of “the child’s ap-pearance” were extracted and compared with the child caregivers’ narratives of “awareness from the child’s appearance”.
The results suggest that beginning childcare professional’ “awareness from children’s appearance” in this study is an awareness that leads to “understanding of young children,” especially to an understanding of children’s inner world. The perspective of “awareness from the child’s appearance” of beginning care-givers was found to be broadened during the year, as perspectives of “awareness” emerged that had not been discussed previously.
