Characteristics of brain activity during mental imagery in gymnasts
Get PDFThis study clarified the characteristics of brain activity during the recall of the performance based on the gymnast’s ability to recall the goal imagery. The participants in this study were 22 gymnastic athletes. They were asked to answer a questionnaire, a subscale of the Japanese version of The Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaire (SIAQ), to measure goal imagery ability and recall the imagery of floor routines in the artistic gymnastics competition (Imagery tasks 1 and 2), which were the experimental tasks. In Imagery task 1, the participants were asked to imagine a floor routine in the performance configuration presented by the experimenter, and in Imagery task 2, they were asked to imagine a floor routine in the current performance configuration. The participants’ brain activities during the experimental tasks were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The results showed that oxyhemoglobin (oxy-hb) in Ch increased to a greater extent in Imagery task 2 than in Imagery task 1 (p<.05, p<.01). In addition, the Δoxy-hb of the gymnasts in the Imagery tasks 1 and 2 was higher for the high goal imagery group than for the low goal imagery group (p<.05). This study indicates that recall of the performance imagery of gymnasts may be related to the recall of the performance and the working memory. It is the characteristics of brain activity during imagery in gymnasts and provides useful information for imagery training.本研究の目的は，体操競技選手を対象として演技のイメージ想起中における脳活動の特徴と体操競技選手の目標イメージを想起する能力の違いによる演技のイメージ想起中の脳活動の特徴を明らかにすることとした。本研究の実験対象者は，体操競技選手22名であった。実験対象者は，イメージ能力を測定するために日本語版The Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaireの下位尺度である目標イメージの項目に回答し，実験課題である体操競技におけるゆかの演技のイメージ（Imagery task①および②）を実施した。Imagery task①では実験者が提示した演技構成でのゆかの演技をイメージさせ，Imagery task②では実験対象者が現在行っている演技構成でのゆかの演技をイメージさせた。また，実験課題中における実験対象者の脳活動はFunctional near-infrared spectroscopyによって測定した。その結果，Imagery task②はImagery task①よりも多くのChで酸素化ヘモグロビン（oxyhemoglobin; oxy-hb）が増加することが明らかとなった（p<.05, p<.01）。また，目標イメージ高群のImagery task①とImagery task②におけるΔoxy-hbは，目標イメージ低群よりも高いことが明らかとなった（p<.05）。本研究の結果から，体操競技選手における演技のイメージ想起中には運動プログラムの呼び出しやワーキングメモリーが関連している可能性が示された。これは体操競技選手の脳活動の特徴であり，本研究によってイメージトレーニングにおける有益な知見を得ることができた。原著論文departmental bulletin pape
