Representation of Alice in Japan’s ball-jointed dolls
Full text linkThe popularity of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-glass in Japan is evident in the contemporary acceptance and consumption of characters that have de-parted from the original works. Against this backdrop, this paper focuses on Alice, represented by ball-jointed dolls, a type of creative doll uniquely developed in Japan. Since the 1960s, when Shibusawa Tatsuhiko introduced Hans Bellmer’s ball-jointed dolls in Japan, they have held a unique position in the Japanese culture. Today, many exhibitions of this type of dolls are held in Japan, and Alice dolls are frequently exhibited. To examine why Alice is often chosen as the subject of ball-jointed dolls, this paper first clarifies the origins of the connection between Alice and Japanese ball-jointed dolls, and then examines the background of this connection in consideration of the relationship between Shibusawa and his contemporary literary figures’ interpretation of Alice and dolls. Thereafter, we focus on John Tenniel’s uncanny illustrations of Alice that influenced doll artists and analyze the doll-like nature of Alice that underlies this uncanniness. Furthermore, refer-ring to Freud’s and Jentsch’s discussion on “The Uncanny” and Benjamin’s essay “In Praise of Dolls,” I dis-cuss the uncanny nature of dolls and the dollmakers’ aspirations contained in them. In Shibusawa’s interpretation, Alice’s image was created by unmarried men’s narcissism, and doll artists, such as Bellmer, were related to it. However, this interpretation cannot explain the current situation in which many female doll artists produce Alice dolls. Tenniel’s image of Alice’s doll-like nature stimulates various doll artists, many of whom are women. Additionally, the uncanniness of Tenniel’s Alice can be connected to the uncanniness of dolls, which have characteristics that make us conscious of the liminal domain between life and death. Gender does not matter for doll artists who have a strong affection for dolls with these characteristics and who attempt to create them. Alice transcends gender differences, and is a significant motif that realizes the diverse expressive aspirations of doll artists.日本におけるルイス・キャロルの『不思議の国のアリス』とその続編『鏡の国のアリス』の人気の高さは，現代では原作を離れたキャラクターの受容や消費にも示されている。このような状況を背景に，本稿は日本で独自の発展を遂げている創作人形の一種，球体関節人形のアリスに注目する。ハンス・ベルメールが制作した球体関節人形が澁澤龍彦によって日本で紹介された1960年代以降，球体関節人形は日本の文化において特異な地位を築いている。今日ではこの種の人形展が数多く開催され，そこでアリスの人形が展示されることも多い。なぜ，アリスが頻繁に球体関節人形のテーマに選択されるのか，本稿はまず，アリスが日本の球体関節人形と結びついた起源を明らかにし，その背景にあった澁澤ら当時の文学者による『アリス』の解釈と，人形との繋がりを考察する。次いで，人形作家に影響を与えたジョン・テニエルによる『アリス』の挿絵が持つ不気味さに注目し，この不気味さに潜むアリスの人形的な性質を分析する。さらにフロイトとイェンチュによる「不気味なもの」に関する議論，またベンヤミンのエッセイ「人形礼賛」を参照しながら，人形の不気味さ，そしてそこに込められた人形作家の願望について考察する。澁澤の解釈では，アリスのイメージが独身男性的な自己愛によって生まれたものとされ，そこにベルメールのような人形作家が結びつけられていた。しかし，この解釈では今日多くの女性人形作家がアリスの球体関節人形を制作している現状を説明できない。女性を含めた様々な人形作家を刺激しているのは，テニエルによるアリスの人形的な性質を持った視覚的イメージである。また，テニエルのアリスが持つある種の不気味さは人形の不気味さに通じ，そこには生と死の境界を意識させる特徴が備わっている。このような特徴を持つ人形に強い愛情を注ぎ，創作を試みようとする人形作家に性別は関係ない。アリスは性差を超え，球体関節人形作家の多様な表現願望を実現するモチーフとしての存在意義を持っている。本稿は2024年3月15日，アメリカ，フロリダで行われたThe 45th International Conference for the Fantastic in the Artsにおいて口頭発表した“The Reception and Development of Alice as a Doll in the Japanese Subculture”を日本語にし，大幅に加筆・修正を加えたものである。原著論文departmental bulletin pape
