The digital shift in news media’s revenue streams during the Covid-19 pandemic

    No full text
This chapter sheds light on the economic resilience of Norwegian news media during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a particular focus on the shifts in revenues within the newspaper industry amidst the crisis. The business disruptions caused by the pandemic inevitably impacted the revenue streams of news media organisations. By analysing revenue data from the Norwegian Media Authority and officially published reports, combined with expert interviews, our study unveils the diverse impact the pandemic had on news media in Norway. The findings reveal that while some outlets encountered cash-flow problems, others successfully navigated digital markets, leveraging the accelerated digital shift in media consumption and advertising during this period. Additionally, the study highlights that only a fraction of the extra funds granted by the state to assist the news business through the crisis was utilised

Who owns the owners? An analysis of ownership patterns in the Norwegian newspaper market

    No full text
This chapter concerns the structure, and particular ownership patterns, of the Norwegian newspaper market. Newspapers constitute an important part of the Nordic media system, and the press has mostly adhered to the principles of the concept of the media welfare state. The state of the press is thus of importance to the state of the Nordic media system. By analysing the Norwegian newspaper market, I aim to answer the following research question: Who are the owners behind the Norwegian media companies, and what is the relationship between these owners? This is important because it illuminates the hidden power structures that exist behind the most prominent media companies in Norway

Iceland’s media policy and the Nordic media welfare model : A fragile support and uncertain future

    No full text
The Icelandic media system shares many characteristics with the media systems of other Nordic countries. In a Nordic comparison, however, the state has until very recently been less active in the media market, and the consensual characteristic of the Nordic media welfare state model has been largely absent. The media market in Iceland has been in turmoil for over a decade, and most news media companies have been run at a loss or with meagre returns for years. This has led to a fundamental but hotly debated shift in media policy, introducing press subsidies for the first time. It has thus been argued that in Iceland, a market libertarian approach to media policy has been challenged by the Nordic media welfare state model. Findings from an analysis of the legislative debate about the media policy change indicate that support for a Nordic media welfare state model is unstable in Icelandic politics, thus its future is uncertain

Mittmedias vägval: Radikal innovationskultur möter traditionstyngd koncern

    No full text

Detoxing the brain: Understanding digital backlash in the context of the media effects tradition

    No full text
In the public debate, problems due to excessive use of digital media are often explained with reference to neurological functions and addressed through calls for self-regulation. This digital backlash and the desire to disconnect from the digital environment can be understood as the latest expression of the perennial concern with adverse media effects. For decades, media and communication research has dealt with the question of what the media do to us, pointing out the complex entanglement of social, psychological, technological, political, cultural, and economic aspects that are part of the question. The difficulties involved in reaching any absolute conclusions have motivated critical media studies to formulate different research problems and thus risking missing the opportunity to make an important contribution in one of the more pressing public debates of our time. Drawing on Latour’s distinctions between “matters of facts” and “matters of concern”, in this chapter, we suggest that critical media and communication scholars ought to treat media effects as a matter of concern to remain a relevant actor in the public debate about problematic media use.

Economic benefits of nature-based solutions in relation to sea level rise, storm surges and extreme rain

    No full text
Nature-based solutions (NBSs) can help adapt to climate change, particularly regarding sea level rise, storm surges, and extreme rainfall. To better assess their impact, positive externalities like public health, biodiversity, and eco system services such as water purification and carbon sequestration, should be included in cost-benefit analyses (CBAs) for climate adaptation decisions. This report presents six NBS case studies from Nordic countries, where positive externalities are monetized by using benefit transfer techniques, and discusses how this affects CBA outcomes. Our results show that including these externalities significantly increases social benefits, potentially shifting CBAs from net costs to net benefits

A baseline studies programme for sustainable and resilient seaweed cultivation in Faroese fjords

    No full text
The overall aim of this report is to provide an overview of the most relevant environmental effects and potential impacts on the marine environment related to seaweed cultivation in the Faroe Islands. The identified environmental impacts were evaluated for their relevance and significance for cultivation in the Faroe Islands. The report includes a number of potential effects and impacts that have been identified and addressed according to their expected significance. From this scoping of potential environmental impacts from seaweed cultivation in the Faroe Islands, a baseline programme is suggested. Such a baseline programme, and a consecutive monitoring program, is needed to safeguard a future sustainable and resilient macroalgal cultivation in Faroese fjords. The suggested baseline programme is a first step in this direction

    No full text
