Public goods and private property : A waltz between Big Tech and the Nordic welfare states
The Internet’s evolution into a critical societal infrastructure has reconfigured the material conditions for communication and led to the emergence of a wide range of new media and communication platforms. Yet, media system analyses continue to focus on legacy media institutions rather than on the broader digital ecosystem that these are embedded in and increasingly come to rely on. In this chapter, we suggest a new path for analyses of the power structures and dynamics that shape contemporary digital communication environments. Foregrounding the material resources that enable and constrain Internet-based communication, we explore how digital infrastructures are organised and controlled in the four largest Nordic countries. We thereby provide an alternative basis for discussing the mutual influence of the welfare state and the increasingly globalised and commercial communication system, and we conclude that the four media welfare state pillars suggested by Syvertsen and colleagues are theoretical ideals rather than empirical realities
Ten-year Regional Outlook: Future Perspectives for Electric Aviation in the Nordic Region
Electric aviation has gained momentum in the Nordic region in recent years. Given its unique geographical features and strong commitment to climate-neutral transport, the Nordic region represents an ideal testing ground for electric aviation. In five to ten years from now, electric aviation has the potential to become reality, so it is crucial to explore which factors may affect its implementation and how regional development may be impacted. The “Electric Aviation and the Effects on the Nordic Region” project presents a ten-year future scenario for electric aviation in the Nordic region. In this report, we explore future scenarios for five selected Nordic routes and identify the key driving forces behind that transformative shift, as well as the positive and negative impacts of electric aviation. The scenarios were developed through focus group discussions conducted with key stakeholders from each of the five Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). The main findings of the study show that electric aviation is generally perceived positively in the various Nordic countries. However, there are also certain contextual differences relating to whether electric aviation is viewed as a pathway to achieving climate targets and removing emissions, stimulating regional development and accessibility of remote areas, or as a new travel option compared to conventional flights. Even though the general attitude towards electric aviation seems to be positive, scepticism and questions regarding the social acceptance of the new technology emerged, as well as the uncertainty around who will be the investors to kick-off the new technology. Furthermore, the future scenarios suggest that a high level of support from local and national governing bodies is required in order to make electric aviation a viable air transport mode in the Nordic region. The insights of this report are intended both to inform decision-makers and to provide nuanced observations from each Nordic country and explore future pathways towards a sustainable and more integrated Nordic region in line with the 2030 vision of the Nordic Council of Ministers
Identity Matching in the Nordic Baltic-region
The Nordic and Baltic region represents some of the most digitally advanced societies in the world. An enabling element for this is the availability and vast adoption of electronic identity (eID) means, both among citizens and service providers. This report is part of a mutual effort that was initiated by Cross Border Digital Services Programme and the Nordic-Baltic eID Cooperation (NOBID) project with the aim to expand the Nordic-Baltic countries´ national success in eID to also cover cross-border interoperability and digital mobility in the region. The content of this report, delivered by Civitta and SK ID Solutions, investigates the landscape of cross-border identity matching of natural persons. It does so by providing an overview of the current situation and practices, from country to country, as well presenting insights and perspectives to how identity matching can be solved
Screening of compounds in tire wear road run off : A Nordic study
Tire related additive chemicals can leach out and enter the environment. Road run-off and recipient waters are particularly prone to contamination by these chemicals, though data from large screening studies is lacking. Here, we present data from water (road run-off & recipients, atmospheric deposition (rain), snow), sediment (marine, snow dumping sites) and biota (blue mussels) samples collected in the Nordic countries. The aim of this study was to provide a first assessment of the presence of tire related chemicals in road run-off and associated samples in the Nordic countries. Tire related additive chemicals were detected in 85 out of 87 samples, with varying concentrations depending on the sample type and location
